I've used this system with big Dobermans, Huskies and Dalmatians (whom tend/love to pull a lot) and I've never had any of the issues mentioned here. I strongly believe basic training or at least minimal heeling on command is the answer for any dog (exercising on a bike or simply walking)
This is the BEST exercise equipment you can get for your dog!! My dog LOVES it! I cant give the springer enough praise! It is just the most amazing thing ever! I love it! I am super active so its great that not only can i take my 2 year old golden retriever out running and walking he can now also bike with me! He is a big puller when it comes to walks and on the springer even when he pulls it doesnt make me unsteady at all (and im pretty light) its a great product and my dog and i really enjoy using it! I recommend this to everyone with dogs!
I really like this video script starting at 1:34: "The patented safety release frees your dog instantly...and then because of our lazy design, you will then need to spend the next six hours trying to chase and catch your crazy Siberian huskies who are putting their pedals to the medal and motoring away from you at 150 mph like they've just busted out of prison and are driving getaway cars."
Well at least the dog doesn't get choked to death or injured because your going off without the dog, causing them to be dragged. As for your dogs running off... try training a solid recall, or an emergency down. (The dog drops to the ground in a down stay)
Yhea my Alaskan malamute would just run into everything just to escape then he would run in a road and only stop on the other side to poop he really did that the once I hated him so much but was just happy he wasent a carpet lol
At least you are not thrown and your bike is not getting dragged. I had a situation like this with my Doberman and the result was: my broken arm and bike needed not only new paint job but also some repairs :/
What a great idea the Springer is. The torque it taken up by the spring. I saw someone riding with this over the weekend, and had to check it out. Very cool.
Thanks for your great question! We highly recommend using a harness with the Springer. The main reason is that a regular collar could injure your dog's neck or throath area during a sudden stop. A harness is usually better since the pulling forces are on the large, more solid muscles of the dog, and by far better distributed, reducing the chances of injuries!
don't do it please lol i use a kangaroo bag to carry my dog on my motorcycle, i put him on my back and every time he sees me grabbing it he already knows it's time for some 180 mph runs jk most I've done with my dog on my back was 90
Hi Mustangs491010! Thanks for leaving a comment! As you can see in the video, the very lightweight, female biker was still able to maintain control when two of the dogs decided to lunge for the dogs on the side of the road. Please feel free to do the same test, attaching four dogs directly to the bike to see what happens!!! The Springer is really working as designed it is simply a lifesaver.
Thans for your comment! Biking downhill is no problem, you just apply your brakes more than usual. The majority of our customers are dog owners that, for many reasons, are not able to give their dogs proper exercise. Many dogs are kenneld up during the day and only get a quick walk around the block in the evening at the most.. The Springer can give proper exercise for many dogs in need!
@Wildstyled: its a piece of wire that looks more like a big bobby pin. You put it through the hole and then bend the ends so it can't come back out. The internet has many powerful ways to find such information. If only you had access to the internet right now... :)
My wife was very badly injured a couple of years ago when we were out riding with our dogs, using leashes in our hands. Our 20lb terrier suddenly went for a lizard that ran in front of my wife's bike and, terrified that she would run over him, she jammed on the brakes and landed face first on the tarmac. Thankfully she recovered with no major injuries aside from some scars, but since then we have never dared try this again. I would love to though, as our dogs are very high energy and they LOVE to run so this product intrigues me. I have a question though - this video shows how the device reacts to dogs that pull away from the bike vs darting in front of it - the copy says that it protects against that too, but it certainly looks like there is enough leash to get under one of the wheels - but perhaps not. Do you have any videos you can point me to that show this in action. Thanks!
Beware when the security attachment breaks because it comes back and whips your behind leaving you cursing the dog for the rest of the run. Happened all the time with my Golden Retriever when he decided to stop and sniff.
Dogs have a lot more endurance than people. If this really works then it would be waaaaay better for at least 1 of my dogs who could go a lot more than I could walk (she can go miles and miles).
Great question! If your small dog likes to run, it will work.. The only adjustment you would have to do is to extend the lease (rope) so it will reach down to your dog. I hope this helped! Thanks!
This bike is almost perfect. It was very easy to assemble. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx2YFGCCEkXKgqCOH-7vlvgb4L4hg4IrXI The fit was great as well. I am 5'11" and 160 lbs with a longer torso and rather shorter legs, and 55cm is a perfect fit. Every component seems to be pretty decent and durable except the rear wheel. It was a bit lob-sided and also the freewheel component is either missing a ball bearing or under lubricated, which prevents the wheel from rotating freely. Because of that, it requires more pedaling and also climbing hills a lot harder than expected. Other than the back wheel, I like everything else about it. Affordable and well-built.** UPDATE **It turns out the sound was caused by the tight chain tension. Once I loosen it up by moving the backwheel a tad bit closer to the crankset, the sound went away.
I have a Springer and it's great, I even had to attach it upside down and it still works. However, both of my dogs won't run on the same side, I actually wrecked pretty bad today trying that and I can't figure out how to attach 2 Springers to one bike. Other than that I definitely recommend this.
Hey, riding a bike is good exercise too! And you're still moving your legs! You're outside! And you can't go as fast when jogging/running/walking. Gosh, I hate when people complain about this. If you don't like what you're seeing, go elsewhere. >:(
Do you need to have your dog on a harness or can it be just a collar? I do dog walking and want to take the dogs running and they all have different gear
my mom got a german shepherd puppy. he loves to run and dig. interesting idea for a bike but im wary of its use with large dogs... i just stick him on the treadmill in the basement. he loves that thing.
Hi! Is it the leash, clip, or safety release that breaks while biking with your dog? Feel free to contact us via our web site so we can try to assist with this issue.
I have this but my dog breaks the rope off the bike. I have to use a prong, and I hate using that if she goes around a pole. What else can I do. I spent so much for this. :( Other then that the other parts are sturdy. I just don't know how these dogs stay on they must not pull hard. :(
People tend to over do it for the dog to the point that their paw pads get worn and sore, and that the dog does not complain and show that it is over exerted! I have seen this many times, or when the dog sees another one on the other side of the bike they run in front or into the wheels of the bike! Also, the bike rider only gets real exercise without the dog along!
I recommend learning how to use a leash instead. Because this thing keeps your dog behind your line of vision, you cannot see when your dog needs to slow down. Also, I don't believe for a minute that the spring would absorb the shock of a full grown German shepherd. (I walk two at a time on the right side of my bike with a leash.) When you use a leash you can see when your dog is ready to dart off in a direction, usually after a cat or another dog. With this, you can't. Seems very unsafe for rider and dog.
I think I'll just have my dog run next to the bike offleash instead - I want her to be able to get away from me if I slip and crash the bike (not get trapped underneath it).
I feel the same way!!! My shepard/husky mix is 90 pounds. Id rather let go of the leash when hes about to take off rather than have a bike pulled out from the side of me.
Alguien de ustedes, saben en ¿Qué lugar? Aquí en la Ciudad de México puedo comprar ente producto, ya que se me hace muy práctico para sacar a mi American Pit Bull, a ejercitarse, saludos y gracia por la respuesta.

How would this work if you were biking downhill? I have trained my dog to bike alongside me when I bike with him on a leash. He is a boxer. I have given him leash and vocal commands and he is very trained. I am still considering this because although I trained my dog this may make things easier. I think anyone who can't train their dog doesn't understand their pet or doesn't feel the drive. I'm a teenager and I did this easily. Have a good day, everyone!

a long rope such as mushers use will give you more time to react than this springer-short leash solution. your points are valid, though "tripping" is seldom a dogs problem, but a husky can be distracted by a rabbit or mouse -- and she manages to do a 90° turn in the blink of an eyelid ... and runs with close to lightspeed towards that rabbit, this goes so fast that the biker is in danger more than the dog.... short leashes are stupid. omg it frees your dog instantly isn't that dangerous my dog might run away i mean there is a very large field in front of our house and he's ran across it into the woods a few times and its really hard to catch him that seems scary!
It only does that in emergency's. And it's up to you to make sure your dogs trained in a solid recall, or a emergency down. (The dog drops to the ground in a down stay, and doesn't move until you retrieve them) The product can't do that for you. All it can do is help you bike with your dog a bit easier and safer, while making sure your dog doesn't choke to death if they decide to suddenly stop and you start to drag them as a result. I'd rather my dog be freed from the contraption, instead of it holding tight and causing my dog to choke as he's dragged along with it. Even then it'd be my fault for not noticing my dog's situation and stopping sooner.
You could drop the leash while on a walk and then the dog is loose - same situation. All dogs should have reliable recall if they're going to be out in public. Recall should be the first thing ever taught to puppies imo.
This may seem safer for you, but in the event that you crash the dog is permanently attached to you bike. With a leash you could let go, and the dog would be fine. Also you have no way of seeing if the dog is tired.
It's your job to check in on your dog. To look back and make sure they're okay. It's not the products job to care for your pet or know when to stop. That's on you.

This seems like a badly designed device. Humans are built for long-range endurance, while dogs are not. And since your dog is behind your line of sight, you can't gauge how tired they are. What if they try and stop for a break? That spring guarantees that small dogs will get dragged alongside your bike, while large dogs might stop and flip your bike.
Nelly Orange Lol. Mine is a sled dog (literally from competitive mushing lines in Alaska) and I've taken her 10 miles straight in a day just fine. They can run hundred in the freezing cold through snow pulling hundreds of pounds and remain healthy. Dogs can be quite athletic if you work them up to it and you're sure to safely condition the dog. I watch my pup constantly, it's pretty easy to do.
Pay attention. Stop and gauge the amount of activity. Common sense would lead us to not over do it with our pups until they become acclimated to a certain distance. Watch the video again and pay attention to the break away component which will mitigate any flipping.
He's not wrong about the last part though. My ass ended up flying down the street at 25mph. Would not recommend, lol. Definitely train your dog first. Was my fault for running two new dogs together in a neighborhood with a lot of off leash dogs. Bad idea, not the dog's fault.
I hate people who are on bikes while dragging their dog along. Get off your butt and run, jog, or walk with your dog. Don’t forget to stop and give your dog water too. They got camel packs for dogs now ha ha.

I modified my Springer America replacing the plastic clip with a caribou clip and replaced the string with chain link
At least you are not thrown and your bike is not getting dragged. I had a situation like this with my Doberman and the result was: my broken arm and bike needed not only new paint job but also some repairs :/

Thanks for showing multiple dogs. I was wondering if this was going to work with my two 90-pounders.
it honestly took me like 1 minute in to realize this was an actual thing, and not a parody
Some of my best memories with my Caesar a 100lbs German Shepherd was with the Springer. r.i.p.
Fun fact!
My grandfather actully invented this.
Its from norway just ''google it''.
Habe das System seit 30 Jahren und es gibt nix besseres 😂

Yes... if you want to find roadkill attached to your bike the next time you stop.

that was the best part of the whole video
I just got one and it rocks!!!!!!
I just trained my dog to walk leash-less next to my bike... Yeah it's a rottweiler, but most people think it's cute :P

So I cannot believe the non sense negative comments here! It only shows lack of dog knowledge and lack of dog training!! Any dog should attend minimal dog training / school in order to be a well balanced and happy k9 within any house hold. In this case, heeling is the minimal required but very important (even for simple walks any dog and it's owner, would highly benefit from heeling on command)

It only does that in emergency's. And it's up to you to make sure your dogs trained in a solid recall, or a emergency down. (The dog drops to the ground in a down stay, and doesn't move until you retrieve them) The product can't do that for you. you suppose to haul a trailer or a basket (for small dogs) if you think your dog will get tired. Then you just put the dog on the trailer
Like the kind Miss Gulch used.
This is dangerous to dogs for many reasons
I hate people who are on bikes while dragging their dog along. Get off your butt and run, jog, or walk with your dog. Don’t forget to stop and give your dog water too. They got camel packs for dogs now ha ha.
