This song just grabbed my heart and wouldn't let go. It reminded me of my parents who have been together for almost 60 years. As soon as I heard it, I thought of my dad singing newfie and celtic songs to me as a child. It's incredible to have a lifelong love and to stay together as the years fall away.

My late Dad would always sing this beautiful song to my late mum and I guess he singing it to my mum now in heaven. Miss them both so much in my life.
This song reminds me of my Primary School days in Dublin back in 1967. Out teacher at that time ( a Mr Fitzgerald from Sneem in Co Kerry) often sang this song to us in class. I think it' a particularly beautiful song that mixed with sadness, joy and nostalgia. I hope you like the song too.
This is my favourite memory of my late father - he was a big fan of these amazing guys and sadly passed away in 2013 at the age of 65. Listening to this song brings back memories of road trips where at least one Foster & Allen song (and usually Maggie) was played!

I have always loved this song, but never knew the name of it. I finally found out and Foster & Allen do it so beautifully it brings tears to my eyes.

It may have been written in Canada... maybe by a person if Irish, Scots, Welsh or British ancestry. But make no mistake, it has become deeply ingrained in the hearts of the people of Scotland, Britain and Ireland.

This is not celtic music. The song was written by a Canadian.
You are absolutely right the song is from the New World not our side of the pond. It has been popular in Scotland for so long that many here think it is Scottish. It was on Ord's 1930 book on Bothy Ballads and has been an integral part of the Selkirk Common Riding for many decades. Likewise the Irish tenor John Maccormack recorded it in the 1920s so it has been around and popular for a long time in both Scotland and Ireland so many people presume it is from our islands..
a nice version of the song but I think jimmy ferguson version is a lot nicer
