@@LudicrousFeed appreciate the response but I really think motoring journalists need to start pressing Byd about big ticket repair cost for future long term ownership instead of the same talking points like towing capacity.
@@Rabs73 two very different drivetrains, will be really interesting to see how it performs when it arrives. I think it'll sell like hot cakes. The 4x4 ute has become Australias most wanted segment, and soooo many will never tow anything, just family off to Bunnings or IKEA. This will be amazing for that, and the commute to work. IMO, all cars should be hybrids as minimum, it's just a waste of resources to dump all that energy in the brakes as heat. Even if the drive train, like on the Ranger Raptor I have, is made for performance, a very light hybrid could change the economy significantly. For me, no traffic or heavy traffic makes a difference of about 4L/100. The BYD Shark will probably be more or less unaffected by stop start traffic.
Los conocedores valoran , asi cuando EEUU,UE,JAPON hacian buenos carros todos lo valoran y ahora llegaron otros iguales o mejores deben valorar tal cual
People are always skeptical or cautious of new-brands which is somewhat justified. BYD and other Chinese makers will have to work hard to earn the trust of their export markets
Nice walk in the morning perfect time for it as well. The Shark sounds like it is a serial hybrid where the engine never powers the wheels directly like the Holden Volt. Unfortunate it's not pure electric or give an option for pure electric at least. I suspect that other EV pickup trucks like the F150 lightning and some of the others have better frunk and better V2L. Why does BYD continue offering USB-A when many of their competitors are doing USB-C only now, being as it is 2024 drop the USB-A and replace them. I'm assuming the range is NEDC so about 50km real-world EV only range?
Will be interesting to see if it also has parallel mode to the front axles like the Song Plus / SL6 - I can’t recall if Michael said that in his presentation. Hopefully we can get at least 60-70km real world EV range on the 29kWh blade battery
So the total range (battery plus petrol) in the presentation that the engineer showed, was 800km from a 60 litre tank. So if you consider the quoted electric only range is 100km then the vehicle is getting 700km on petrol. This is a fuel consumption of 8.57l/100km. Is that high for a 2.5T ute? I had hoped a hybrid may have been able to achieve better. You would certainly be trying to maximise your EV running and the Shark6 allows you to do that day to day.
That is definitely the key to making this Ute as economical as possible … trying to run on the traction battery for day to day urban use as much as possible

The Shark did seem to do pretty well, but I would have loved to see a more comprehensive test of things like traction control and differential locks with respect to off-road capability. For example, what does the vehicle do when there are only three wheels on the ground? What about when you only have two wheels on the ground? While that may sound pretty extreme, it is not exactly an uncommon situation on moderately tricky 4WD tracks.
Yup it was a reasonable introduction on the controlled course. I’m sure further specialised testing will be performed by 4x4 enthusiasts once it launches in Australia
Doesnt mattrr is on Electric or hybrid..u are driving it on electricity all the time..the Engine here act as a power generator to pump electric back into the battery.
I don't know who they were talking to about towing and payload but they got it way wrong. Its the biggest letdown of the car. It really should be minimum 3t and 1t payload.
This look like a massive american style pickup truck. It seems too big for Australia. Look how tall the front bonnet it. You can run over a child and not notice.
790kg payload and 2500kg towing is going to limit its appeal to caravan owners. Take to adults plus 10% tow get for towball download plus lever from ball to rear axle wil leave very little payload for toys.

We didn't get to see the 2025 Seal on this trip but will definitely take a look when it arrives in Australia
XPeng G6 or Sealion 7? Did enjoy a Melb EV show G6 test drive, ice to drive, the auto parking and the finish.
I’ll make a more educated reply/video once the SL7 specs and finish are confirmed for the Aus market
Hey Tom!!! Bit disappointed you didn’t activate the ICC and lane keep assist like you do in Sydney……. Track so narrow that trees would have been like lane markings…… guess the hosts mightn’t have been impressed. 😅
😂😂I didn’t want to upset our gracious hosts
Ldv will be first 4x4 full ev in Australia
Would love for a BEV Shark eventually
Hey mate did you ask BYD about out of warranty repairs like battery/motor replacement cost?
Not specifically but I think a replacement battery from Tesla costs around $15-$20k (comment made in 2024) but hopefully will decrease over time as battery prices also start to drop
@@LudicrousFeed appreciate the response but I really think motoring journalists need to start pressing Byd about big ticket repair cost for future long term ownership instead of the same talking points like towing capacity.
Agreed. I wonder if BYD AU themselves have even thought this issue through …
Bring it to the Victorian High Country trails around the remote Wonnanggatta area/Blue Rag track ........then get the ✅
Yup agreed needs to be tested and documented 🙏
@@LudicrousFeed Blue Rag will get the eyeballs.
Pretty tame 4wd track.
Needed some moguls and some larger hill ascents/descents.
Apparently they’ve done the testing already in Australia. We just need a content creator to document those trails when it lands here 😁
23:16 - "Wow this is proper off-road" - this man clearly doesn't watch 4WD 24-7.
Lol I'm waiting for someone to take me on a "real" off-roading adventure in one of these
Could it be the end of the Ford Ranger reign? Certainly likely to be the better car compared to the upcoming Ranger PHEV.
More power at least on paper
@@LudicrousFeed and a much bigger battery.
Infotaiment looks different from the mexicano INE
yes ..bigger that looks like 15"
Los conocedores valoran , asi cuando EEUU,UE,JAPON hacian buenos carros todos lo valoran y ahora llegaron otros iguales o mejores deben valorar tal cual
People are always skeptical or cautious of new-brands which is somewhat justified. BYD and other Chinese makers will have to work hard to earn the trust of their export markets
You can hear the motor generating the battery and keeping it ticking along
Yes the BRoll was from later in the morning from another driver … presumably the electric range had fallen below the threshold
Hey Tom,Bao 5 will be more impressive, trust me😊😊
Yeah that looked and drove next level
@@LudicrousFeednice!
Was the Bao 5 a RHD model?

When is BYD going to offer cars at Chinese pricing with free shipping here
Why would they do that. I would suggest never.
@@GDM22 just joking. What I really mean is that their pricing in Australia is too high even if considering shipping, local network costs. Just a thought from a potential customer's perspective. I'm not an insider and have no idea what the local costs would be.
@@philip.1408 Yeah but most are not making money. Also China is the most competitive car market in the world and the biggest, they get the volumes up there, get some economies of scale in production and then can aim to make profits overseas. You would suspect in a price war, BYD would be in the strongest position.
@@philip.1408When Australia converts to left hand drive and has chinese as the official language 😂. So no need hardware or software differentiation.
But I agree with you, Australian BYD pricing is around $8K to $18K more than Chinese pricing, simply too much. Especially the Dolphin and Atto3. Seal pricing is okay.
Looks promising
Agreed
'Offroad' a subaru outback could have done that track.
Probably. Happy to do further 'hardcore' testing back in Aus ... which apparently BYD have already done so they tell me
Watch the hand coordination on the steering wheel....
👍
The Shark did seem to do pretty well, but I would have loved to see a more comprehensive test of things like traction control and differential locks with respect to off-road capability. For example, what does the vehicle do when there are only three wheels on the ground? What about when you only have two wheels on the ground? While that may sound pretty extreme, it is not exactly an uncommon situation on moderately tricky 4WD tracks.
Yup it was a reasonable introduction on the controlled course. I’m sure further specialised testing will be performed by 4x4 enthusiasts once it launches in Australia
Commercial time!
For commercial use!
Toyota and Ford truly shitting their decks now.
Probably
Doesnt mattrr is on Electric or hybrid..u are driving it on electricity all the time..the Engine here act as a power generator to pump electric back into the battery.
Yes that’s the case in the Series hybrid mode. Apparently DM can also allow the engine to power front motors in parallel if required
I don't know who they were talking to about towing and payload but they got it way wrong. Its the biggest letdown of the car. It really should be minimum 3t and 1t payload.
That’s the impression I also get when talking to those in the know
You could drive a 2wd ute down that dirt track
It's not super off-road of course but apparently BYD have done more intense testing in Australia so they tell us
Do BYD cars give statistics on how much much charge it has recieved per month? For shared households where bills a split.
That’s one department that BYD is deficient in … charging stats
@@LudicrousFeed thank you
Rivian r1t is the best.
Goodbye Ford Ranger 👋
Hello competition!
Looks great, now just get rid of the petrol motor from it and increase the battery size
Hopefully a “Shark 7” BEV will eventually surface … 👀
Special comments from the rear seat
Back seat Vlogger? 😁
This look like a massive american style pickup truck. It seems too big for Australia. Look how tall the front bonnet it. You can run over a child and not notice.
Sadly this is what the market wants
Didn't you notice the front facing camera on the display screen in the Ute to see what is in front of you
790kg payload and 2500kg towing is going to limit its appeal to caravan owners. Take to adults plus 10% tow get for towball download plus lever from ball to rear axle wil leave very little payload for toys.
Yup but for the majority of users I think it should suffice and is a good start
@@LudicrousFeed did they mentioned what the GCM was?
