About the piece::
David Lilly explores the realms of nostalgia, love, and the magic of youthful summertime in his first piano Sonata, "Summer Love." The Sonata, a derivative work, draws its opening theme from a short tune known as "The Roost," which gained popularity in the video game "Animal Crossing: Wild World," composed by Kazumi Totaka. Lilly specifically chose this tune as he declared it to be the anthem of one particular summer above all; and he vividly remembers playing this game extensively during that period.
After introducing Totaka's theme, Lilly develops and expands upon it, crafting an original 25 minutes of technical piano challenges, infused with his own unique flair and strong influences from the Romantic era. "Summer Love" crystallizes the fleeting juncture between the innocence of youth and the impending journey that lies ahead.
