Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja -- Papageno's aria from Die Zauberflöte Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja, The birdcatcher I am indeed, Stets lustig heissa hopsasa! Always happy, heidi heh hey! Ich Vogelfänger bin bekannt I, the birdcatcher, am well known bei Alt und Jung im ganzen Land. To old and young throughout the land. Weiß mit dem Lokken umzugehn Know how to get around the bird decoys und mich aufs Pfeiffen zu verstehen! And be understood on the fife. Drum kann ich froh und lustig sein, Therefore I can be happy and funny, Denn alle Vögel sind ja mein. For all the birds are indeed mine. Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja, The birdcatcher I am indeed, Stets lustig heissa hopsasa! Always happy, heidi heh hey! Ich Vogenfänger bin bekannt I, the birdcatcher, am well-known Bei Alt und Jung im ganzen Land. To old and young throughout the land. Ein Netz für Mädchen möchte ich; A net for girls is what I would like; Ich fing sie dutzendweis für mich! I¹d catch them by the dozen for me! Dann sperrte ich sie bei mir ein Then I would lock them up with me Und alle Mädchen wären mein. And all the girls would be mine. Wenn alle Mädchen wären mein, If all the girls were mine, So tauschte ich brav Zukker ein. Then I¹d dutifully trade for some sugar. Die welche mir am liebsten wär, The one I liked the best, der gäb ich gleich den Zukker her. To her I would immediately give the sugar. Und küsste sie mich zärtlich dann, And if she kissed me tenderly then, Wär' sie mein Weib und ich ihr Mann. She would be my wife and I her husband. Sie schlief an meiner Seite ein; She would fall asleep by my side; ich wiegte wie ein Kind sie ein. I would rock her to sleep like a child.
There is a version of Der Zaberflaute with performers by the names of Walter Berry and Emmy Loose singing the Papagina / Papagino roles. They are very good too, singing-wise, definately give these guys a run for their money, both have powerful voices. About the acting I don't know, it is only a music cd. Thanks for posting this great performance.
My guess is that there was a trap door in the floor and another in the cage where they could release the birds from below and then quickly close them up again. For the effect of flying into the cage, it looks like a lighting effect
this is one of the best.. about the birds there is two options: 1. they are making a special light (white light in this kase) go towords the cage and the birds are coming from under the stage and into the cage (a special location) 2. trained birds.. they have been trained to fly into the cage when he play the flute or so..
the pronounciation sounds really good, i guess this must be german native speakers (im german) beside that, "Detlef Roth" to me rather sounds like a german name than a french one
Oh Ja Ja!"
EDIT: Got some of the specifics wrong A white bird prop on a wire is moved across the stage, representing the bird in flight. There's a small hole just behind the cage, which you can see at 1:10, that the prop is moved through. Just as it goes through, a trapdoor is opened and the pigeon flies up. Look at 1:08 and you can see the pigeon flying up from the bottom. That's why Roth was looking so intently at the floor when he was setting down the birdcage. He needed to make sure he put it in just the right spot. Also why the birdcage doesn't have a bottom, which you can just barely see at 0:21.
I don't know where this was performed, so don't know the specifics of this stage, but I tend to agree with positivelyfantasmic's analysis. It is fairly obvious from the speed and how straight the "flight path" is that the white things moving around the stage are props on a wire. Trap doors in stages are also very common (although this one would be comparatively small). It would also explain why you can't see through the lower part of the cage - the high bottom is an additional precaution to keep people from seeing the trapdoor opening and closing.
Maybe it´s Mozarts original speed he ment to have been played the music, maybe not. - I think its too fast (in every version i know). Once in a TV report they sayd, that the klassical music today is played/conducted with double speed as then.
The Aria is supposed to spread happiness, unfortunately his presentation doesn't really have thar effect. I believe that comes mostly from his costume and facial design, especialy those Spots over his eyes... they make him look scary and violent instead of Joyful and Happy. His voice is great anyway.(though it seems not too fitting for some passages, but i think that's rather the director's fault than his own)
Detlef Roth is the best Papageno that I've heard! He looks so young for that voice. Will have to look for this complete version of the Magic Flute.
thats right
Angela Hyder yes it is!
Do you have it?
Here, if anyone still interested: th-cam.com/video/x9nyPrJy5ek/w-d-xo.html
Wonderful performance ❤ But how do they get the doves to go in the cage 😊
Roth's rendition of this aria is so utterly adorable! A sort of sophisticated childishness, if you will.
So far my favorite papageno opera singer
The best version Of the Magic flute i never heard! Detlef Roth you're a genius ♥️
Der BESTE Vogelfänger!!!
Vielen Dank!

One of the best Papagenos I've heard.
Also, he is German, from Freudenstadt.

Awesome.I love it
Indeed. Try also the version of Wolfgang Brendel with the Bayerische Staatsorchester in München, 1983.
mozart was a nut... this is brilliant!
My god! we sang this song during music lessons ... ! =O
I would expect that voice to come out of a more portly man. lol
So would I, but I fit in the same category. I’m 130 pounds soaking wet and can hit a D#2. And I’m 17.
@Stylesnshit Dethlef Roth is definately German, not friench nor austrian (i googled). And so of course he´s german native speaker. :)

What a cool trick with the bird!
yeah he is
Très bien on écoute sa en musique 😘😘
A great singer!!! - Very great!
Does anyone have an idea how they do this with the birds? Looks crazy :-)
They put them in the cage from under the stage look closely.
Cudowna Aria -;)
HE'S ADORABLE!!!!
It's a piccolo player in the orchestra.
This is such a great aria, well done. I wish he made a little more of an ass of himself though, this aria lends itself to that
This is addictive...
que bello!!!!
How do they get pigeons into the cage?
A Kunihiro magic?
from beneath

No no... i think he is right! He has a wonderfull voice but his performance didn't fit the role of papageno.
