I served on two jury trials. One was a murder and the other was a long list of charges against a guy who violently beat a girl he was dating. The details of both were very disturbing but both were found guilty so I was happy to be part of getting justice for the victims and their families. Good luck!
@@rawtoast1 In the US, people accused of crimes are judged by “a jury of their peers.” Juries usually consist of 12 members of the public. Local courts issue what are basically subpoenas to local tax payers, registered voters, etc. and the attorneys narrow down the people randomly subpoenaed for jury duty to 12 (plus 2-6 alternates). The jury hears the details and evidence shared in court and decide whether the plaintiff is guilty or innocent. Jury duty is a legal requirement by federal, state and local laws. It’s considered a “duty” of everyone to provide this service to the public.
@@rawtoast1 I’m glad it helped. You have to take time off work to sit in a room and wait to be called, then the attorneys ask you a bunch of questions and if they both like you then you have to go in every day and pay enough attention to be sure you’re making the best decision you can based on the info you’re given. A lot of people don’t like the burden of missing work and/or family time but others don’t like having the responsibility of making such a big decision that will affect a complete stranger. I didn’t mind serving on juries but sometimes the jurors are sequestered so they can’t go home for the entire length of the trial. That would be very difficult! They very seldom know if the jury will be sequestered until after the trial starts. A lot of people just don’t want to be bothered with any of it.
@@thepuglady3931 Ohhhh I see, thanks! I hope I’m not bothering you asking this many questions but do random locals (or peers) get selected for the job, or are there certain people they choose they know will do a good job on jury duty? And I’m guessing it’s not something you can say no to?
They tried to summon my mom for jury duty 3 years after she died and then got mad when I told them she was dead😭😭 like mf if you don't stop yelling at me i'll be in court next 🤜🏼🤜🏼🤜🏼
One thing you can do to get out of it is to show a bias from the get go. Say “that guys guilty and nothing will change my mind” you’ll get sent home for sure.
My mom has served jury duty 15 times!!!!!!!!! Like what?? She is now being called to be a regular jury, (which means she has to go for the first week of every month and only get paid 50$ a day) which she cant do as a single mother of 2 who works full time and also has 2 dogs.
When my mom was getting interviewed for jury duty, the person who called her up said Ms. (first name + last name), but on the paper she had told them to call her Dr. (first name + last name), cause she has a Ph.D. So she coldly corrected them and that's why she didn't get chosen. It was so funny. The guy who interviewed them and called them up was like, "oh, shit, I messed up the name" Still laughing from that day
My mom never wants to do it (she can’t even watch judge Judy without crying for the victims) and every time they call she says “oh I can tell if that mf is guilty just by looking them in the eyes.” let’s just say she’s never had to go. 😂😂😂
People need to take Jury duty more seriously. Peoples entire lives on the line. Be there like you would want the jurors in your own case to be there. Imagine you framed for murder and all the jurors thinking about is how much they dont wanna be there.
It’s the $10/day payment for me, when jobs aren’t required to pay anything for you to serve, who’s supposed to be able to live on $10 a day?! In this economy missing 1 week of work means someone won’t be paying their mortgage that month, or eating. Like it’s crazy.
@@Cozycandice I'm surprised to learn that (I am not from the US) I would assume it would be only fair if your job would be obligated to pay you for the missed day than plus of some small paycheck enough to buy you a lunch and commute from the court itself. That is done for people in my country when they have to do something to serve the country or even routine medical check-up required by work. There might be some cases that wouldn't be true and we do not have jury duty, but in most cases it is a nice break of a routine.
Im pretty sure that if you dress inappropriately for jury duty they will send you home, BUT you have to come back again and serve another time (and not in like a year but like maybe the next week) so you don’t really avoid it because you would just have to go back. Also they normally send the dress code in the mail or you could probably find it on your states like website. I would just search up [state name] jury duty dress code and you’d probably get results
I got summoned twice, back to back but I was deployed and didn’t live at my dads house anymore so he just threw them out lol never been summoned again 🤷🏻♀️
i was a victim in a case a few weeks ago and i was subpoenaed by the suspect. as a 14 year old girl things were very scary walking into the court. but we walked up the stairs and abt 36 people were up there all for jury duty. one girl was in slippers and pajamas! she didn’t make the jury duty, which is ok, because the 6 of the jury’s that were chosen, did an amazing job!!
My chinese grandmother who was an immigrant once had to, and even though she could speak perfect english, she just said, "no engalisha, uh uh, me" so then she didn't get chosen.
I was called for jury duty right when I turned 19! I did not get selected to serve on the jury, so after two days of sitting in the courtroom for about 3-4 hours while they conducted selection, I was sent home and kept on call for the remainder of the trial. They keep the extra people on a call list in case someone on the jury is found to be biased or something else.
I remember when I was in the first or second grade my dad had jurry duty and idk why he chose to do this but he put my (11 year old) brother and I in a preschool while he was in the court. I also don't know why the preschool accepted two very much not preschool aged children.
Having to stop a court case because a member of the jury dressed inappropriately is also very disrespectful to the victims... It can take forever to get a proper court date.
I know this comment is a month old, but jury duty is how your "peers" are selected for jury, hence jury duty. If you're registered to vote in the USA, you can be randomly selected for jury duty and then they randomly select pools of 12 for the trials from there. It's the only pretty solid part of our justice system.
Why do random Americans get forced to decide the fate of people who are murderers when they don't even have a law degree? Im just curious someone tell me.
You don’t sign up for jury duty. You’re randomly selected from a list of people, and you get on that list by being registered to vote or having a drivers license.
I served on two jury trials. One was a murder and the other was a long list of charges against a guy who violently beat a girl he was dating.
