  • It had been a while since we home brewed some beer instead of mead! We partnered with Mean Brews to brew an Italian Grape Ale two ways. Check out Part 1 also, where we brewed our version. We included riesling concentrate, pale ale LME, specialty grains, and Cascade and Wai-iti hops. We brewed with kveik Hornindal, that we washed and dried ourselves. It was a ton of fun to research and build this recipe. Part beer, part wine, this one has an INCREDIBLE aroma. But how does it taste properly carbonated? Let's find out together! Check out the Mean Brews channel in the link below!

try using 'Nelson Sauvin' as a hop addition, it has a white grape/grapefruit and sauvignon blanc aroma like a New Zealand white wine

Thanks for presenting the collab!! I love making mead and wanting to get more into making beer. A good segway into that! And the Mean Brews dude is my kinda guy with all the technical info he provides on his brews.

I haven't made a bad beer yet (I'm sure it will happen eventually). The Mean Brews videos REALLY help. I also use David Heath's videos for reference, but they aren't quite as complete and informative as Mean Brews. An excellent resource. Going to brew a Tripel tomorrow!
As for all grain, all you need is a kettle, a thermometer, and a brew bag. I have a 5 gallon soup kettle I use. Use the stove to get to strike temp, then pop it into a very low oven for the duration of the mash (checking temps, and stirring every 15 minutes). But I also brew small batches (1.5 gallons), so YMMV as far as using a stove top for boiling. Better equipment will lead to better beer... but it works for now (space requirements).

Anna’s dad has a giant keg that has been converted for an all grain outdoor brew set up. I’m trying to get him to help me refurbish it so we can move that direction for our beers! And I agree, Mean Brews has been incredibly insightful for beer research!

What I love about Mean Brews vids... I can take a look at the recipe and how he got there.... then adjust it for what I have on hand...with stuff that is still winning comps. Like... I don't have the Hallertau... but I do have the Tettnang loose hops. I know in the style many won using the Tett... so it is a reasonable swap. I am new to beers and I just don't want to brew crap. I have everything I need now to brew what should be a decent beer with water adjustments. I am amping up my yeasty beasty varieties in the next bit.

I was reading about tettnang in the Hop Variety Handbook this morning. What a coincidence! I do love the Mean Brews approach - super helpful to a beer amateur like me.

@@DointheMost I got a screaming deal on the Tett. $11 lb for the loose hops... Canadian funds 2020 crop. A local hop farm unfortunately was going under so they discounted and sold it all. A local brew group I am in had a person with the connections so we could all buy what we wanted. I have talked to experienced brewers... most of them have to look up hops. There is SO much to learn. The bonus tho... it has made me a better mead maker. Okay... gotta go... I have some blueberry wine to bottle... then transfer a mead and stabilize to bottle it tomorrow... and rack off & backsweeten my spiced still perry... and bottle it up too. I did the most on both.

Fine video BC. Gonna upload my brewing of the beer and just link to here for the tasting. Thanks again! Pick a style for all-grain brewing and we'll brew it when this mess is over with.
