Classic GE U30C's on the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad -LS&I, old school GE U30C locomotives-

  • The Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad is known for having some of the last GE U30C locomotives left in operation. This video will feature them, in what is likely their final weeks of operation, in iron ore service, as they move to and from the mines in Michigan. Once the shipping season ends on Jan 15th, these veteran GEs (also called U-Boats) from the 1970s are likely done, and will be retired.
    Starting off in the waning affects of a blizzard, two U30Cs round the bend at Eagle Mills Jct in the early morning hours. As the train rounds the curve, the headlight beams illuminate the falling snow, and bring the entire scene to life. After bringing the 121 empties to the mine, we'll see the power bring back the loads in two cuts. In each instance, the former Burlington Northern units put on a fine show. The first loads of the 7 Tilden are seen at Eagle Mills Jct as they enter the rock cut. The second run of taconite loads are seen just down the rails, and before the locomotives throttle down. It was great to see these classic diesels in operation, and experience them before they are retired.

    The U.P. is beautiful. I was fortunate enough to work 3 months during construction of the new hospital in Marquette. Loved Ishpeming and Negaunee. Never had a bad meal anywhere and never ate at a chain. Took the mine tour in Ishpeming, watched ships unload coal at the power plant. Definitely going back and maybe do my own railfanning! Great video!

    Those old U boats are from the Northern Pacific days. I remember when they pulled coal cars on the Burlington Northern in the early 70’s. Can’t believe they are stilling rolling. Fun to watch them take off and belch black smoke like old Alco’s.

      Thanks for the comment, and watching! These were actually both built for the BN around 1974, and were never under NP ownership. It's amazing how long these have lasted, and they sound great!

    Not sure if you still can as some of the mines have closed but up on the Range, on a cold morning, you can (or could) catch a train coming out of
    the mill with a fresh load of taconite headed for the lake. Yep, a steaming diesel train.

    • @SD457500
      @SD457500  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can still manage that to this very day, but the pellets have to be FRESH, and it needs to be rather cold out. It has been on my to shoot and see list for quite a while now. Thank you for the comment, and watching!

      Alex, they are buying three of the six current leased AC4400CW locos! Three more will come soon! They are not ready yet though! This means both U30C and now just one C30-7 will be operating! The season just started! I myself am actually coming here (from lower MI Peninsula) to catch LS&I, E&LS, the new Watco operations and anything else of interest!!!! I have to see the "Green" units! I even was in Marquette with my late Dad (RCJ I) in July 1996! We saw no trains!!!!! This has been on my list for years!!!!

      CSX Doolittle, LS&I bought three of the six leased CEFX AC4400CW locos! I think they are buying the other three and have three additional ones coming soon! Total of nine AC4400CWs! :( Also, they may keep two green locos for 2022 operation! Nothing is confirmed (per a worker through a Facebook comment)! Now, I have never seen this railroad! I even was in Marquette with my late Dad (RCJ I) in July 1996! We saw no trains!!!!! I have been trying to get here for years! Man it is far away! I live downstate in Roseville!

    Why is the railroad shutting down?

    • @douglasskaalrud6865
      @douglasskaalrud6865 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lake Superior shipping season runs from about mid-March to mid-January when the ice becomes too thick to operate the Soo locks. I believe LS&I doesn't have a storage/retrieval system to store taconite pellets on the ground so when the boats stop running so does the railroad.

    • @SD457500
      @SD457500  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for the comment, and question! The Soo Locks close on Jan 15th, and do not open again until March. This makes the LS&I a very slow railroad, and very few trains run. The end of the U30Cs will likely be Jan 15th because of this.

    • @VincesArtDesigns
      @VincesArtDesigns 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SD457500 oh I see! So the railroad isn’t shutting down, just closing for the “season” basically. Got it. Thanks! Great video and sad that those engines are retiring. They lived a good life of running the rails!
