LCBO strike: Ford accelerates sale of ready-to-drink cocktails, large beer packs in grocery stores

  • The Ontario government said on Monday it’s accelerating plans to expand the sale of ready-to-drink beverages and large packs of beer in grocery stores, as LCBO workers remain on strike in a dispute that largely centres on those exact drinks.
Ontarians will be able to get these types of alcohol, such as coolers and seltzers, starting on Thursday, July 18 - which is two weeks earlier than the initial plan of Aug. 1.
The moves come as OPSEU, the union representing 9,000 LCBO workers, continues to be on strike since July 5, shuttering hundreds of stores. The well-resourced union has given little indication of backing down, and it seems that the dispute is only bound to escalate.

I generally support workers, but the LCBO is a garbage, archaic system. If they want my support, they should be open 24/7/365.
More access to products is good for the consumer, and opens the retailer to more revenue. How come I can drink at a bar until 2am if I want yet some LCBOs close between 6pm & 8pm?
More competition also opens the possibility of a reduction in prices, I don't often drink anymore, but the odd time I buy a couple beers it costs almost $10, not long ago that would buy me a 6 pack. Give me a Costco bulk buy option so even though I'm spending $50 bucks I'm getting damn near 40 beers.

People think that this will somehow make alcohol cheaper but in no way will private business drop prices. The convenience factor is negligible as there are already so many LCBO locations established, I can't remember ever thinking there is some lack of convenience getting alcohol in this province. Doug Ford has already cut the revenue from vehicle licensing, now he wants to cut revenues from the LCBO and screw over the people working there so big grocery stores can create more profit. In British Columbia, the provincial government has implemented a hybrid model for liquor sales, involving both government-run and private liquor stores. The British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch (BCLDB) is responsible for wholesale distribution and controls the pricing of liquor province-wide. Here's how it works: Government Liquor Stores: These stores, often referred to as BC Liquor Stores, are owned and operated by the provincial government. They offer a wide range of liquor products, including wine, beer, and spirits, at fixed prices set by the BCLDB. These stores are typically larger and offer a more comprehensive selection, often at lower prices than private stores. Private Liquor Stores: Private businesses are also allowed to apply for licenses to operate liquor stores in BC. These stores can be smaller, more specialized, and offer a curated selection of products. Private stores must purchase their liquor from the BCLDB at a set price, which is typically slightly higher than the cost for government stores. This means that private stores often have to charge higher prices to customers to make a profit. The benefit of this model is that it offers choice to consumers. Those who prioritize cost-savings can opt for the government-run stores, where they can find a wide range of products at the lowest possible price. On the other hand, those who value convenience, specialized products, or a unique shopping experience may choose to pay a premium at private stores. Additionally, the BCLDB still controls the wholesale distribution and pricing, ensuring that the province retains control over liquor sales and the associated revenue. This model can also promote competition and innovation in the market, as private stores must find ways to differentiate themselves and attract customers beyond simply offering lower prices. However, one potential drawback is the price discrepancy between government and private stores. Critics argue that it creates an uneven playing field, as private businesses must compete with the government's buying power and ability to offer lower prices. This can make it challenging for private stores to survive, especially in areas with close proximity to government-run stores. As for your suspicion about Ontario's approach, it's hard to speculate on Premier Doug Ford's exact intentions. However, it's worth noting that Ontario has already started down the path of privatization with the expansion of private wine and beer sales in recent years. The province has also indicated that it is exploring options for modernizing its alcohol retail system, so perhaps a model similar to British Columbia's could be considered. Ultimately, the British Columbia model demonstrates that there are alternatives to a complete dismantling of the government-run liquor store system, and it will be interesting to see how Ontario chooses to evolve its approach to alcohol sales in the future.

60% of LCBO workers are casual time getting 16-24 hours a week. The average yearly salary of those people is $26,000 and it can take 12 to 15 years of working part time at the LCBO before getting a full-time job. Doug Ford clearly shows his lack of understanding of logistics. A trait that is essential in a good leader. He says now without realizing that the suppliers do not have warehouses full of stock waiting to be shipped out. The man ran a printing business and if he was really good at it, he would not be in the Liars Game (aka politics) JIT has been standard for 2 decades with most supply chains. It takes weeks to make beer or alcohol and years to make wine. You can't just whip up a batch of any of it overnight. A minimum of 40 days lead-time is required.
