  • Digital download of the 'Dreams' TD cover album including this track, available now in most online stores distrokid.com/...
    My cover/reinterpretation of Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet', mostly a cover of part 2 with some improvised and live performed parts. Created with a combination of software and hardware. This was a tough one to figure out, due to the complexity of the sequences and the live played feel to it, which I tried to capture with my own live performance and improvisation. Hope you enjoy it, feedback is welcome!
    High quality .wav available to download on my Soundcloud page here: / tangerine-dream-ricoch...
    Thanks to Data Rebel for the mastering.
    Credit to Mike Winkelmann for the VJ Loop.
    Recorded direct to SD card on the Zoom R16. Some compression and limiting was added in post.
    Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the music, and want to be notified of new uploads.

    "State Azure" Your channel is the only one I have found that (in my opinion) actually cares to create a certain "magical essence/fabric" within the sound that is "Tangerine Dream!". I am in "Awe" of you Sir or Lady, and I sincerely Thank You for sharing all your mesmerizing musical compilations for all of us to get lost in and explore great adventures within our minds! I sometimes wonder if your kind truly knows how impactful your work of arts are.... because they evoke an energy/vibe of long lost memories and even possible future memories which reverberate our entire being!. I know I speak for many people who have the same thought's as mine and how I express them. Again Thank You for sharing your small piece of starlight with us.

    This is an amazing cover. I think that some people are missing the small fact that by covering this they are keeping the original sound and feel of TD alive. Considering the path the band has taken in recent years I welcome the covers that State Azure has done, and hope that they continue to be inspired by the early works of TD and create new original works in the same spirit. In no way will these covers replace the originals, but like a newborn artist learning to play Mozart before going on to make their own contribution to the world, we must celebrate this effort to introduce TD to a new generation who can by hooked by State Azure, and then go back to the originals, and then load their musical library in both directions to make a fulfilled collection of awesome ear candy.
    To the haters : Edgar Froese is dead. We need to pass on his legacy along with the respect to the remaining original members and those who have lit their torches from the fire of the people who have brought us such amazing music since 1967. We need this music , and music like it, in the future. We owe it to those who will come later looking for this sound the way we did : with discovery and awe.

Picture a child sitting in the passenger side of a vintage "1984 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo" with no hard top cover accelerated at the speed of (95mp-h) at 1:30am on a pitch black highway road with no cars in sight for miles! Now here comes the irony moment the TD track was "LIVEMILES" which was recorded at night live in Albuquerque Mexico and I was just mesmerized/hypnotized in the most deepest parts of my consciousness traveling to unknown places/worlds I swear to the fkn Universe I never experienced anything else like that in my entire being!. Better than me daring to cover Lead A Normal Life by Gabriel or gosd help me, Marquee Moon by Television. I learned the whole album and recorded it on 4-track. Sounds a lot like a newer/'quantum' version, minus the lead wanking :)
    Very 'in tune' everywhere, a nicely disciplined and glued together mixdown, although 1st transition from intro to 1st sequence is rushed and the thunderous bass of the original is missing.
    _I made a bit longer redux of this myself about 10-12 yrs ago using a 777, little phatty, memotron, karma piano (yikes!) and carvin guitar. I've also covered a few from Exit, Encore and Force Majeure._
    and since you're already halfway there, sound-wise...
    Mellotron and tape echo is the next step to getting closer to their mid-'70s sound - 'tron is used somewhat less on RIcochet, but it's on everything from '74 to '79. To really get there add Synthi and a 2600 with the Moog copy filter. The bassline has to be able to BOOM and drift out of tune some, or it's too stiff, small and stable to fill out and glue the low end together. It's crucial for this era, as whatever drums (once Franke chained himself to the Moog, post-Atem) or other bass elements they'd brought to bear were rather dainty - the 'big Moog' dominated a huge % of the mix energy and all of the bass end.
    Cheers!

I agree, no one will ever produce a carbon copy of the original. Ricochet was conceived, written and recorded once, using the tech of the day, using unique sounds. It happened once. This cover is the only one that captures the essence, the sequences as near as possible by a new master. Brilliantly.

    Sublime. Your Tangerine Dream covers are pure gold. If you haven't covered anything from Hyperborea or Exit yet ....... I'll cast my vote here for anything from either. Many thanks for all these wonderful videos.

    Nice gear and fabulous cover of a true Tangerine Dream classic. Ricochet is one of my favorites. I'm personally working on a Rubycon cover. Most of my synths are software VST and a Casio CT-X keyboard.

    Today I was working with my computer, writting some documents while listenning to this music, played in a TH-cam Mix containing some of my favourite musicians' music, with the TH-cam screen minimized (so I couldn't see the video, and was just listenning to the music). While this music was playing I said to myself "Tangerine Dream are really wonderfull!!!". At about 06:00, I decided to make a pause in my document work to maximize the TH-cam screen and see the images of the video. I then realised that it was you playing the music, and said to myself "Yeah, State Azure is really wonderful!!!" 🙂

    You did a good job in "distilling" the essence of Ricochet (Part 2, as it sounds) into a more concentrated cover! Maybe you could bring more of your own interpretation if future TD covers, could be interesting.

    It is a great work of yours!
    Everyone would have to acknowledge your achievement, they are interpretations of masterpieces - just like in classical music: The old masters are gone, their music lives on - and that's a good thing: in diverse interpretations.
    This is how the current TANGERINE DREAM can be seen - creative musicians continue to pursue the ambitious goal: music, spherically floating, without limits.
    Anyone who criticizes this has the right to do so, but limits himself!
    I also enjoy all the TD (live) interpretations of the old classics ...
    But what TQ & his team are now doing has what it takes to achieve further peaks ...
    HANSEATIC HARBOUR LIGHTS is (for me) another TD masterpiece

    I first got exposed to electronic music nearly 40 years ago. I was just starting high school, and Jean Michelle Jarre's Concerts in China and a couple of Tangerine Dream albums were my first introductions. Nearly 40 years later, though there is a lot of great stuff out there, there's still nothing quite like it.

    I have listened to the State Azure cover of "Love on a Real Train," more than the TD original. By far. The original is amazing and DECADES later, based SOLELYits individual greatness, I still seek it out and it is how I found the covers, but I now prefer to hear the SA cover. I would love to hear Kraftwerk's TEE as well as others from you. Big Fan! Great work!

    The sequenced parts are spot-on, just the melotron flute part of the intro is missing. I heard the original track when I was 21 and to some extent it defined the music I like ever since. So much so I played the intro section of Ricochet Pt.2 at my mother's funeral.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The sequenced parts took some work to figure out! I had worked out most of the flute part too, but I wanted to change it and ended up playing some kind of improvised flute part for the outro. Glad you enjoyed it!

    • @robertbrown3413
      @robertbrown3413 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@stateazure To clarify it was actually the original version I played at the funeral, which was 4 years ago. Anyway, I'm glad to see someone still likes T.D. All too many people today, including the mainstream media, think electronic music is "just pressing a few buttons". Unless you're strumming a guitar it "ain't real music".

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robertbrown3413 Well it's a lovely piece that intro, and I imagine your mother would have appreciated it. At my own mother's funeral, I chose one of Jon Hopkins' piano solos as I was massively influenced by his music at the time. TD's music will always be quite special to me, their tracks inspired me to learn synths when I was a kid and really got me into electronic/ambient music.

    • @robertbrown3413
      @robertbrown3413 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stateazure From what I can find there is one other cover of this on TH-cam, which fails to get the sequenced part right that you did get right. I wouild also have done the string sound as you did, with a dense modern electronic string patch rather than the rather weedy one of the original record.
