I really love your color spotlight series! I don’t do watercolor paint, but I dye yarn with acid dyes- also a transparent color medium like watercolor. Your series helped me develop an intuition about how colors would layer and blend, saving me a lot of money, since wool is relatively expensive to experiment with. Your swatch panels also inspire wonderful colorway ideas for dying wool for spinning, as there is color mixing in the dye pan as well as optical blending during spinning.
That's so fun to hear, and I'm so glad it's been helpful! Thank you for sharing. I recently got back into crocheting for the first time in a long while. I'm currently juggling a cardigan and a sweater :D The sweater in particular has been especially gratifying as I'm mixing both colors and yarns fibers/weights. Happy fiber dying!
I'm so glad you decided to do the color spotlights again. I LOVED the first series so much; mainly because of all the info you provide doing them. Thanx Denise, and HAPPY PAINTING!!!
I do like a PB16 and I have a handful and my favourite that I have is actually the Maimari Blu PB16 which surprised me. Maimari Blu is not my favourite or go to brand, but when I looked at my PB16 swatches it was my favourite out of the 5 I had. I often end up being surprised by my ‘favourites’ when I play along with colour showdown, but it’s quite fun and enlightening.
It's because of you that I mixed DaVinci's Permanent Red with Winsor+Newton's Viridian and my goodness my heart swooned! I also mixed PG7+PG18+PR101 [Indian Red from WN] and discovered a lovely deep green too! Your videos are very helpful and my DaVinci Palette is growing because of you!
It’s so nice to watch you painting again! Beautiful paintings, and I love your color mixes. I’m always impressed by the textures and marks you make with your brushes.
Schmincke PB16 is so gorgeous! I picked it up while trying to find perfect blues to match the skies in my area - and then realized it not only changes from morning through night and throughout the seasons, but also from horizon to zenith. Phew! That’s a lot of blue hues. So glad this one is in my collection!
Hullo Denise, I just hope you continue to create these wonderful spotlights! I seldom watch such instructional videos yet I enjoy your intensity as well as your knowledge! I do believe this is an amazing practical exhibition with an amazing animal painting too! Thanks for giving us such enjoyable videos featuring colors and Please keep adding to this playlist!
Wow. Love your show & tell about colours & brands & everything watercolour. And watching the iguana come to light, shape , & divine colour is a treat. Thank you so much …
I feel like every color preference you have magically aligns with mine lmao! I also stopped using Phthalo Blue and just adore Phthalo Turquoise in its place. Thank you for the information and the beautiful iguanas.
I love watching your videos! The iguana on the far left (2/11 painting) is my favorite. I think the phthalo turquoise comes through even as it's dulled down, adding color without looking unnatural. I'm doing an iguana (different species) as part of a wildlife painting challenge, and seeing these iguanas helps to pique my creativity as I'm deciding what paints to use. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
It is lovely you got back to doing the color spotlight Denise and what a color to start with! It is always inspiring to see your ideas and color combinations. I probably wouldn't have touched this color if it wasn't for you highlighting it! With the combination with buff titanium I am seriously considering including it in my travel palette update. 💙
This was so much fun to watch. I am happy to see you painting again. I enjoyed watching the iguana slowly appear for the abstract shapes of the first few layers. I need to explore Phtalo Turquoise more after seeing all those swatches. Thanks Denise
Beautiful paintings, Denise. If I had to pick favorites, it’d probably be the muted iguanas on the left, since I absolutely adore the buff titanium mixes used in there.
This is probably one of my favourite series on youtube, so I'm super happy it's back! It's what got me interested in pigments, and helped me find some of my favourites, as well as helped compare different brands and made me find the ones I liked most
I have discovered PB16 through a second hand tube of Maimeri Blue (old one, before revamp), I fell in love ever since and its in my top 10 pigments. I have RS and WN too, but maimeri blue is just my absolute favourite
Thank you for a very helpful video. I have painted on and off for many years and have far too many paints but for som reason this is a pigmentet I have not used. Recently I bought a tube W&N and this video gives me a good start on how to use it. I particularly like the mixes with Buff Titanium.
Awesome video - I don't usually use phthalo colors due to the staining and heavy tinting strength but I think you've convinced me! Great job - now off to get more paint!!
@@InLiquidColor unsure. Though I prefer hot press watercolour paper, so that may have something to do with it. Since the colours with hot press are more vibrant.
My favorite trio is phthalo turquoise with pyrrol red and either DaVinci's gold ochre or hansa yellow medium. I don't think I've tried it with violet iron oxide but I'm gonna give that a go. Nice to see your color spotlight series again!
Seeing this video on my homepage was an instant click! So happy to see you do this again Denise! Time to binge watch all the other color spotlight series again and again (lost count how many i rewatch the previous Color Spotlight series) also those iguanas are amazeballs!!!
What a great video. I've been ambivalent towards phthalo turquoise... until now! ❤ After watching your video I can't wait to start playing with it. 😊❤❤
ahh i'm so excited to see that color spotlight is back!! i actually picked up phthalo turquoise years ago after hearing you mention it, and i really prefer it to phthalo blue green shade as well!! i had used up much of the tube and set it aside, but now i'm looking forward to adding it back to my palette! one of my favorite mixes with it was always pr233, somewhat surprisingly considering the differences in their strength, but the granulation and color separation is so pretty!
I agree! Granulating colors with the phthalos and quins make for such special mixes due to their different qualities. And the good thing about mixing phthalos turquoise with lower tinting strengths is you'll never need a new tube of the former 😆
this is wonderful!! I was researching phthalo turquoise and when I refreshed the search, your video popped up saying it was posted only a few minutes prior :P I wasn’t able to watch right then but im glad i’m watching now :D I was looking but failing to find examples of how it mixed with other colors, and this is EXACTLY what I needed - what are the chances?!? I love love love how you layered a purple over the green/turquoises in the first iguana, that has been my most favourite color scheme lately!! the iguana looks so magical in your painting!! tysm for sharing your process & paints✨ at your recommendation I tried da vinci’s raw sienna (not the raw sienna deep version) and it is the PERFECT match for a handmade paint I love to use, but the creator doesn’t sell anymore - a huge relief :)
I have missed you! Can't beat the actual PB16 in my experience. My 1st actual PB16 was Holbein back in 2008. I think sometimes a company can come out with inferior batches.
also, these iguanas turned out so, so beautifully!! i now want to paint some iguanas too, or maybe turn them into dragons for the zodiac year ahh. it's hard to choose but my favorite might be the far left, with such a gorgeous color combination of the buff titanium and dark, moody blues
Hi there! The next several colors were part of the last "season" that were never finished, so they're already determined. If I survive them, I'll keep this one in mind, haha.

Aw thank you, Mark! Glad to spend a little time with ya over colors :D

You reminded me how much I love mixing buff titanium with strong colours!
Buff Titanium mixed with cerulean is lovely, too.
It's such a good combo!

Yay for color spotlight!! 💙Showing your palette was awesome, thanks for doing that.
what a beautiful iguana! such gorgeous colors. I really enjoy learning more about colors/pigments from your videos!
Am so happy this series is back! And am so impressed by your sketches! 😍 (Hope you already know I love your painting!)
I LOVE the footage of palette and swatches!

Love this color! Beautiful iguanas.
I adore Daniel Smith phthalo blue turquoise. And how it neutralizes with pyrrol scarlet. It becomes an absolutely gorgeous warm brown
Is yours heavy on the binder, or did I get unlucky?

what a stunning colour ☺☺☺
I really wish you wouldve swatched schmincka phthalo sapphire blue. It's absolutely the brightest and deepest phthalo i have ever seen!!!❤❤
It's very pretty, but this was on PB16 not PB15. My apologies!
I have missed you! Can't beat the actual PB16 in my experience. My 1st actual PB16 was Holbein back in 2008. I think sometimes a company can come out with inferior batches.

Eeee! Iguana dragons would be so fun. So glad you like the one on the left! He's my favorite, too.
I love PB16 ❤
Nice to see this, been too long. Another pigment that can create havoc in a small travel palette if it creeps.
I'd love to set up a tiny palette with just the colours you have swatched ❤
It was surprisingly versatile!
Can you make color spot light about cobalt violet?
