I have a '21 Jeep Rubicon stripped down on options inside and out (nothing extra) because I'm building it up. The only factory upgrades I did was 2.0 Engine, 8 speed auto transmission, hard top, dark gray paint, tow package (a must), floor mats and spare tire carrier. I have put aftermarket: bumpers, side armor/sliders, two inch lift, sector shaft brace, power stearing boost valve with cooler, 37's on bead lockers, and running 5.13 gears. It does everything I want offroad and drive excellent even at highway speed.
Ordered a ‘23 Willys XR in Granite Crystal, can’t wait for it to get here. That Gobi looks incredible too. I like how the Willys XR is becoming an alternative to the Rubicon. Lower price point, similar creature comforts and you can always add leather seats, lockers, and discos aftermarket if you need them.
One of your best videos. I will stay hooked on these two Jeeps, comparing and contrast how you build them out and hopefully how they perform comparatively on the same obstacles. Very interesting.
It’s so sad to see that in 2023 jeep still won’t give standard led headlights for all models like almost every other manufacturer, do better Jeep, you’re charging 50-70k.

If only the Willy's XR had a rear locker! I didn't know we can finally get the dana 44's without the Rubicon trim. Jeep is heading the right way with better axles on lower trim levels.
The locker on the Rubicon might come in handy when rock crawling in 4-lo but for for daily winter driving the Willys will have a LSD in the rear while the Rubicon is an open dif.
I ordered a 2022 Willys Sport JLU with the canvas top and six speed manual with no creature comforts it’s an amazingly simple vehicle that has more capabilities stock than I still have the courage to use. Yet compared to my father-in-law’s 1969 Dauntless CJ5 the 2022 Willys Sport is a luxury vehicle!
Great video man! As someone that currently thinking about getting a jeep in future. Thanks for show the difference, I did drive my best friends jeep gladiator, last month when we went to big bend. I definitely think the v6 is under power. So a 2.0 turbo sounds like a great option.
Well the willies is closer to the original design and I see these "basic" jeeps sell really well. I would like to know how much lighter the willy is. There has to be a pretty big difference and that will also be noticable off road.
You make an excellent you tube video! I Love the new XR,… I have one on order, hopefully here this fall. Would love to hear your thoughts on mods for the wheels? I haven’t seen one ‘in the wild’ yet, but am considering 1.25” wheel spacer - do you think the XR needs a little more aggressive stance (hard for me to tell until I see one in person). Would also love to see some clips with the Jeep ‘in action’, even on some mild off-road terrain
P.S. I also got it in black that way the front grill was “color matched” along with the black canvas top and black plastic fenders. Even my bumpers match. Plus I really like the finishing touches of the “All-Black” look provided by the black painted Moab wheels and blacked out badging. Did get heritage cloth interior to lighten it up inside.
Great compare Matt actually between this video and your video on a 2.0 turbo super helpful and making my decisions. Struggling with the leather seats versus cloth when I order do you find the cloth is more problematic when you do a bunch of off roading Or do you intend on doing upgrades later to the seats
Love the video, but I'm really looking for a video reviewing/comparing the 2.0L JLU with Extreme package OFF ROAD... it must exist, it has to. Haven't found one yet though. Do you have a video for that? My fiancé and I work in the mountains but drive 1hour highway to get there. I'm leaning towards the Willy's 2.0L with Extreme package but not sure how it is off road. Technically, we need a 2.0L JLU on the way there and a 3.6L when we're there unless the 2.0L can handle steep hills on winding mountain roads, gravel or dirty roads, washed out roads and light-medium fording, probably no rock climbing but wooded and open trails for sure and large acreage off road driving.
You can use fabric markers to black out that red stitching on your Rubicon. I'm with you - if the red doesn't nicely complement the exterior color, puke. I would opt for the brown leather seats so the stitching is white and the dash is gray.
On Jeep's website I can't build a Willys with the Recon pkg and cold weather group. I wonder if something changed since your dad built his? Thanks for the videos and I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys do with these cool Jeeps
I keep racking my brain on both a Willys recon or a base Rubicon. I never had lockers on my truck and I won't have time to work on my Jeep for at less a year. Willys should be good I think.
I am on my second base JL Rubicon, and absolutely love them; however, had the Willys XR been an option before, I would have picked it over the base Rubi.
In 2020 I got the Willy's & loved it, but I wanted lockers. So few months back I traded for 22 Sarge Rubicon 2.0L. Can you make a video about the offroad+ feature? I love using it in 4H. Very little to no vids about benefits & when best to use it.
Did you get the sand color paint from the factory? I didn't think that was an option. I would definitely pull the trigger on having one built if that was the case.
LOL tried to build these...I can't do both XR with Cold weather package..I click Cold weather and it delets the XR and vice versa. seems they want you just get the Rubi if you want XR and Cold weather

I have an honest question: Do the hood vents even work? AFAIK, they don't have any holes, and just spit water out the side through a channel in the insulation. Maybe air can seep through the insulation? I'm not sure.

Xtreme recon was not an option when I got my 21 Willys back in Oct 2020. Suggestions on going with bigger tires using the stock rims and no mods to the suspension? Also no spacers.
So the Rubicon has a cabin air filter, and from what I can tell from Jeep's website, the Willys does not. Do you know if there is a way to add one to the Willys?

They take on most of the texture of the plastic so it’s not a smooth finish like the factory, except the grill of course. The silver looks good. Stronger colours like red or yellow looks kinda cheap on the painted plastic. I think those colours should have a smooth finish like yours. I like the Willys more so in my case as I’m never rock climbing and only in muddy fishing trails and the like. I HAD a 2019 Wrangler Rubicon diesel. Loved that!! Traded it for a 69 Bronco though. Straight across. I definitely did better in that trade. Now the only Jeep in the family is a Wrangler Sahara 4xe that my wife drives. She does just over 80% EV with it as we live on the edge of a city now.
Why is the off-road plus button gone on the Rubicon? Did they remove the ability to have the rear locker on in 4wd hi then? My rubi allows this when in off-road plus mode.
Lockers; transfer case; sway bar disconnects; all in the Rubicon for off roading along with some more minor things. If off roading isn’t your prime effort and just want a cool Jeep to play around with then the Willys is fine. I have owned both in the past and the Rubi is defiantly worth the extra money for the performance it brings. But- I’m thinking either the Willys or a Bronco for my next off roader. I have no plans on extreme off-roading.
I know the fronts will fit, the rear from what I’m hearing will with a bit of persuasion, not cutting just maybe a little heat to help mold the plastic!

Nobody should buy any Jeep before 2024 as the twin turbo Hurricane straight 6 , 500 Hp rolls out to make the Jeeps do what they are built to do. The radio junk and color is for very few, not someone who is actually a worker. Give me a simple speaker and am/fm . Actually, a plug in for a transceiver to use speakers and power would be a great add on for those of us that work for a living.

I have both. The Willys has the diesel and I added the front camera to the Willys.
It needs to be said Willys comes standard with rear LSD, which isn't an option for a Rubicon. Arguably this gives you better on road capabilities

It is relatively small, I’m going to add a taller lift and it should work out fine!
High Velocity is legit.
The vented hood doesn’t work unless you replace the vents or cut out the bottom half of the vents I went with Valkyrie vents.

It all depends on where you plan to take it, I’ve seen Jeeps without lockers conquer a ton of hard trails!

Hey Matt, do you know what impact the Extreme Recon package has on the towing/payload capacities for the Rubicon ER?
They are the same as the standard rubicon from what I can tell!

They still have them mine is a 22 and I have the Button!

Nobody should buy any Jeep before 2024 as the twin turbo Hurricane straight 6 , 500 Hp rolls out to make the Jeeps do what they are built to do. The radio junk and color is for very few, not someone who is actually a worker. Give me a simple speaker and am/fm . Actually, a plug in for a transceiver to use speakers and power would be a great add on for those of us that work for a living.
