Brian! Thank you so much. Your comment about the bypass valve being open at hard lock was like a lightbulb turn on for me. Your method worked! Not so of the other recommended methods on TH-cam like turning the wheel back and forth 100 times. Now off to our vacation! Thank you!
I always like the extra banter you provide in the description of your You tube videos. "cow spit" description, "It'll be barking at you, rrr, rrr, mur murring at you", "bucking and jerking at you" , hydroboost comments, etc. ... Great job! ... Keep it up! ... These tips are what I needed to know!
Thanks for posting your videos. I bought a 99 dodge 3500 last spring knowing that It needed some attention. I could not brake and steer at the same time is I changed the power steering pump. I removed just the power steering pump and left the line with the 18 mm fitting on the pump(rusty, easier to deal with on the bench.) and removed it from the brake booster. When I reassembled the pump I used Lubriplate on the shaft and no seal trouble. I followed your instructions plus left the line loose at the brake booster. It bled quickly in the air, when I put it on the ground it took less than five minutes to finish. Thanks Again!
Turn it one way to lock, rev to 1400rpm for 15-20 seconds (hold the wheel to lock and the rpms.) Then turn it off and let it sit for 30min to an hour if you can. This purges most of the air really fast, but then foams the fluid. It takes the fluid a while to give up the air. So that's why you let it sit.
Now,that I see this guy doing this job, I remember that my 2003 ford windstar the power steering used to make a squeaking noise. And every time that I checked it it was ok. I used to check it when it was cold. But, one time I checked it when it was hot and the oil was foamy. I changed the oil and no more squeak.
Hi, I usually cycle the wheels slowly side to side 3-4 times and shut the truck off and allow the bubbles to rise for an hour, repeat as you did. I work on industrial hydraulics and the same issues are common (air messes them up and 2 hrs later its fine) LOL. BTW: your wife is cute... Sometimes I remove the return line and purge all the old fluid out by turning the wheels to flush the system and bleed as outlined in the video... Thanks Brian, I respect ur channel as good advise.
10 years later and the Brian comes through once again. This is the only bleed process that worked for me. We replaced the steering gear box on an 01 f-250 7.3. Wheels off the ground for us, but the rest was the same. This was the only video that worked.
My wife is pretty confident in the way she looks and can hold her own. She's just happy she isn't having to help in the shop. Paying Spanky a due compliment doesn't diminish my wife's status or standing. Everyone has something to teach or something of value to share. I reserve the opportunity to give praise where it's due. It's something I try not to be stingy with. Life's too short for drama and all that P.C. non sense.
They need it all to run properly and there's no restriction like a butterfly throttle body to create the options for vacuum and various phases either. The intake is pretty much just a an open pipe to the turbo/intercooler/cylinder head. Ever notice how many vacuum lines come off the throttle body on a gas car? That's what I'm talking about.
Old trick from years ago: Easier than lifting the steering wheels is to park them on layers of news paper or magazines.. Makes turning the wheels much easier and as a bonus soaks up the spilled fluid. Pumping the brakes is good to know. I know steering and brakes work off the same pump but not sure I would think of it. All I have to do is remember if I ever have to do this one.
i usually just do it lock to lock without it running. key on of course. and i always use a steering fluid with a stop leak, its may seem counter-intuitive on newer vehicles but it'll keep the seals soft for a long time.
These diesel videos are really interesting, since I've never had occasion to work on one. If you are looking for ideas for upcoming videos, I'm sure any discussion of novel diesel systems would be very popular. Perhaps a basic rundown of the anatomy of the power boost system would be a possibility?
Thanks for the video I have been working on my 6.5L gear box replacement for days and could not get the air out and my arms were wearing out. Less then 10 minutes your way and I was done and there is no foam or added bubbles. I do not understand why more people do not suggest this way. Thanks again.
Question.I have 2002 duramax that had a leaking hose from the brake assist to the ps gear box.Everthing was working perfect.brakes and power steering. After shop replaced the hose i now dont have power steering at a idol or low RPM sand brakes dont work so good at low RPM either. They only work good with foot on the throttle or driving down the hyway.Whats wrong??
Thank u I was moving this to your left to right with the truck off then I turned it on and I repeat it a couple times and I watched your video then I went outside and did it and it did feel like it's got more better
Nice video. You don't have the system open anywhere? Where does the air go? That little hole in the cap? Changed out the steering gear in my F350 and need to do this. Thanks for the vid!
Yeah, good to see you Spanky! Great video Brian, could you also pull a vacuum on the reservoir and bleed it with the vacuum pulling air into/through the reservoir?
I have 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 24v Cummins. On power steering line coming of the pump supply line I took it off and have no fluid coming out I tried to replace to pump with a rebuild one the coupling. Seemed fine and lined up perfect didn’t force it in I replace the supply line to . It seems like I have no problems with vacuum I pulled it off should I do a vacuum test and see what should it be at ? It was a rebuilt from autozone should I just go order a different brand pump any recommend brands It looks like it is geer driven what else should I look for or try doing thank you for ur time
After getting a steady leak from my steering rack: I took off the belt from the pump pulley in order to prevent the pump from running till I install a new rack. I've driven with no P.S. for a while (over a year), my system has remained sealed, and looks ok, in fact there's still a tiny bit of fluid left in the reservoir. Do you think I need to worry about replacing anything else when I put the new rack on? I never ran the system without fluid, but there's a lot of shudder in the wheel now.
So if I turn steering wheel and push brake pedal with reservoir fill cap off I'm not going to get bleeding done at all ? When flushing old out and putting new in, I need to keep taking fill cap on / off while adding more to my 7.3 Diesel ? Thanks for any help
I need. Help. I changed my hydroboster seals. I also chaged my power steering pump. I bleed the system. But now I have no brakes wh ed n engine is in. When engine is off my pedal goes to the floor, no pressure at all for brakes.
Raise the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel lock to lock 20 -30 times before starting the engine should get most if not all of the air out of the system. Vacume on the reservoir like TheTexasCoder suggested also works well, just takes a lot longer.
Hello BAXMAN68 - I just replaced the serpentine bets (both the A/C and the longer accessory belt) on my 2008 Ford F-250. I accidentally added water to my power steering reservoir and immediately I flushed the system. I used Macron V transmission fluid and all seemed ok, But the fluid is still frothy/bubbly and the steering and breaks are sketchy at best. I'm going to try your method of getting the air out of the system because I can't drive it the way it is now.
Hi brian did you ever worked on a honda pilot with air inside ps lines my pilot is doing a gurgling noise coming from the ps pump, I've replaced the ps pump, ps fluid tank, hoses, and O-rings with oem used pump but still making that noise, I did the lock to lock thing about 30 times (twice) but still see some air bubbles in there, im starting to think this used ps pump I purchased is also bad, do you have any recommendations? Thank you.
Hi I have a 2003 2500 Cummins I have replaced my gearbox and now can’t turn left or right and my brake pedal is stiff like a old man on a blue pill need help 😭
Hi, thx for the video. I have a 2007 Chevy Duramax diesel & cannot figure out how to build up brake pressure, I've tried your method to no avail, any pointers for me? Thx.Joe
Quick question for you, i have a 2006 2500hd duramax and sometimes itll be hard to turn mainly when its cold. Makes backing out of parking spots challenging. Its got 35x12.50xr20s on it and had a power steering pump replaced recently any idea what it could be? Your videos are great! I watch all of them even if its about a vehicle that i will probably never own. You just give good tips and tricks. Doesn't matter what your working on. You can use your tips on just about anything.
Brian! Thank you so much. Your comment about the bypass valve being open at hard lock was like a lightbulb turn on for me. Your method worked! Not so of the other recommended methods on TH-cam like turning the wheel back and forth 100 times.
Now off to our vacation!
Thank you!
She's my apprentice. She's here most every day and she did a beautiful job editing this video too. You're right though- she's not bad to look at.
10 years later this video a gold 💪
Thank you so much for sharing this info just saved me so much time by not changing my steering gear box.

I fought my steering wheel for a week after breaking and replacing the belt. This video helped fix me up 100%. Thank you

awsome info been trying to bleed my system for a while and my shop wanted to charge me 100 bucks. saved me some money and time. thank you
Well done, surprised to hear that Ford put a rack and pinion on a F250 series and not a steering box. Glad to see Spanky's back
Yes! for bleeding 2004 F350 / 6.0. My Wife did the inside, I checked for leaks after we replaced the hoses.
Up and runnin' again, Thanks Team!

Watching this video solved my problem with my dodge's steering after replacing the steering box. Thanks.
Pat Dailey I’m having the same problem how long did it take you until it was fine?
I'd love to- Most of them are front end parts repairs these days. That Duramax is popular because it GOES and GOES without a lot of repairs.
Thanks for your kind remarks and good counsel!
This is so helpful I was wondering why I couldn’t get the air out all the way in my diesel, I just had to crank it up and turn it 💯

Great work you two.

WINNER!!!!! Way to go man!
Thank you for the video. Just repaired the Vacuum Pump and replaced the power steering unit on my 01 Cummins.
Thank you.You are an inspiration ,and your generosity only exceeds your overwhelming good look.
i usually just do it lock to lock without it running. key on of course. and i always use a steering fluid with a stop leak, its may seem counter-intuitive on newer vehicles but it'll keep the seals soft for a long time.
Busted! It is a gear box. Sleep deprivation does that to me. I've been training again...
Thanks brotha this video helped me figure out how to bleed my 1997 F450 Dually 7.3L EAGLE CLAW 💯🏁💪👏
Thanks for showing! now i know how to bleed a power rack,
Great video man! Took about 30 minutes to completely get all the air out but now to pump is back to normal
I'm pretty sure that most F250s use ATF in the power steering rather than power steering fluid. Good video.
I use ATF in my power steering pump in my 97 f450 7.3L & my 88 Box Chevy 454
Because Brian needs an awesome sidekick.
Thanks for the suggestion- did you get your package yet?
Welcome back spanky
Team work...Great to see spanky..She must be soo happy to have such a great teacher in you brian.Detailed orientated like me..Happy halloween...lol
The Ford handbook clearly states to not hold the steering wheel at full lock for more than 7 seconds; unless you want to burn up the pump.
*burp up- sorry. i thought it was punny.
Thanks Brian and Spanky. Good video. Keep up the great work.
haha thank you Mr. Brian!
also love the Ron Paul posters in your shop/garage!
now excuse me while I have a couple more drinks .. :D
Thats my dream truck right there! 7.3 Powerstroke FTW!
Yay! Thanks! :) SO happy to be back!
They rub, but it's pretty tough to get those 3/4 ton springs to bottom out.
Spanky's back....
Happy to be back!

How do you replace hydro boost
Question.I have 2002 duramax that had a leaking hose from the brake assist to the ps gear box.Everthing was working perfect.brakes and power steering. After shop replaced the hose i now dont have power steering at a idol or low RPM sand brakes dont work so good at low RPM either. They only work good with foot on the throttle or driving down the hyway.Whats wrong??

Nice video. You don't have the system open anywhere? Where does the air go? That little hole in the cap? Changed out the steering gear in my F350 and need to do this. Thanks for the vid!
Thats a good looking rig.
DANKE!
Need help 7.3 when o step on the brake to bleed fluid squirts out of the pump revisor an advise or just a bad hydro boost
Didnt realize the New body had hydroboost. The old Vacuum pumps sucked, we had one go out on the 96 last year.
I was wondering about that when I edited the video.... :) Thanks Bonfield!
Yeah, good to see you Spanky! Great video Brian, could you also pull a vacuum on the reservoir and bleed it with the vacuum pulling air into/through the reservoir?

Mail is slow here, so I don't expect it til later this week. I'll let you know, and thank you.
good vid like allways brian!
Approximately how long did it take to get it bled
So if I turn steering wheel and push brake pedal with reservoir fill cap off I'm not going to get bleeding done at all ? When flushing old out and putting new in, I need to keep taking fill cap on / off while adding more to my 7.3 Diesel ? Thanks for any help
Great video!!!
Is this the same procedure for an 01 ram diesel?
Is this the same procedure for a dodge ram 2001 diesel??? Help!!
I need. Help. I changed my hydroboster seals. I also chaged my power steering pump. I bleed the system.
But now I have no brakes wh ed n engine is in. When engine is off my pedal goes to the floor, no pressure at all for brakes.
You need a new remote reservoir for your PS. (where the fluid goes in)
Raise the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel lock to lock 20 -30 times before starting the engine should get most if not all of the air out of the system. Vacume on the reservoir like TheTexasCoder suggested also works well, just takes a lot longer.

yeah.. Brian's wife is gorgeous!!!!! ... and awesome.
D6Spanky yeah but the Ford logo takes a couple points off XD Cummins ftw.
Thanks HOSS

Hi I have a 2003 2500 Cummins I have replaced my gearbox and now can’t turn left or right and my brake pedal is stiff like a old man on a blue pill need help 😭
The name is a bit shocky at first, but you get used to it. It took me a while- now I don't even think about it.
Is this how you bleed the breaks too?
I hardly ever say/do this, but... first! :)
yeah thats what i do works pretty darn good
Blue you're my boy!!!
Why diesel do not have vacuum when they have higher compression?
I want to see you make your first TH-cam video. ; )
Hi, thx for the video. I have a 2007 Chevy Duramax diesel & cannot figure out how to build up brake pressure, I've tried your method to no avail, any pointers for me? Thx.Joe
I'd double check the wear or build quality of the pump.
Thanks Tex!
you are using mercon, right??
Thanks!
Very helpful !!!
Thank you!! :)
That truck Dosent have a rack and pinion lol.
Nor does it use power steering fluid. HAHA.
hahaha first 5 seconds in the video and already invalid...
I didn't know the f250 had rack and pinion :s

I must have missed why spanky is helping out at your shop. i think its cool and all don't get me wrong lol Can anyone fill me in?
Thanks! ;)
