    For the Problem that my professor assigned, the Augmented matrix is as follows
    -1 1 2 2
    3-1 1 6
    -1 3 4 4
    For this problem, to make the number in the third-row first column zero you cannot simply add the first row by the third row. What would I do?

    • @ProfJeffreyChasnov
      @ProfJeffreyChasnov  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      multiply first row by -1 and add to third row

    • @marcellogonzalez3023

    • @marcellogonzalez3023
      @marcellogonzalez3023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @twistedblktrekie Yes it does make sense. Thank you. My original question was more along the lines of figuring out what was allowed mathematically for this problem. I was aware that multiplying a positive number by a negative gives you a negative, and that multiplying two negatives or dividing two negatives will give you a positive. However, I did not know that you could manipulate the sign of the number in row one prior to adding it to row three. I was under the impression that I was not allowed to change the sign and that what was given in the original matrix could not change beyond the usual procedures taken in the Gauss Elimination Method.
