Yellow-billed Duck (Anas undulata) Bird Call & Video - South African Ducks & Waterbirds
In South Africa, the Yellow-billed Duck can be found throughout the country, including in the famous Kruger National Park. In Kruger, they can be observed in various wetland habitats, including rivers, pans, and dams. They are often seen foraging for food or swimming in small groups, adding to the rich diversity of birdlife that the park is known for.
The Yellow-billed Duck (Anas undulata) is a species of dabbling duck that is native to sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. It's one of the most common and widespread duck species on the continent. The name "Yellow-billed Duck" comes from its distinctive yellowish-orange bill, which is a key identifying feature.
Appearance: Yellow-billed Ducks have a relatively plain appearance compared to some other duck species. They have mottled brown plumage with lighter underparts. The male and female ducks look quite similar, with the male typically being slightly larger.
Diet: These ducks are primarily herbivorous, feeding on aquatic vegetation, seeds, and grasses. They may also consume small invertebrates such as insects and crustaceans.
Breeding: Breeding usually occurs during the rainy season when suitable nesting sites are more readily available. The female typically builds a nest on the ground among vegetation, lining it with down feathers. She lays a clutch of eggs and incubates them for about three to four weeks until they hatch. After hatching, the ducklings are precocial, meaning they are relatively mature and mobile shortly after birth.
The Yellow-billed Duck can be seen in the Kruger National Park, and although it as not as common as the other duck species, like the Whistling Ducks (White-faced and Fulvous), they do enjoy occupying floodplains and flooded areas where there is a host of food for them in the wet season.
This video shows a Yellow-billed Duck pair and a lone Yellow-billed Duck feeding and swimming. In the background you can hear their classic call, which is exactly what many people think Ducks should sound like.
