Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) Bird Call Video - Hamerkop Hunting Near Letaba River
The Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) is a medium sized wading bird, that is quite spectacular in flight. Watching the Hamerkop is so interesting. They are incredible water birds, and excellent hunters. The name Hamerkop comes from the Afrikaans word, that literally translates to "Hammer Head", referring to the shape of this interesting birds head. Hamerkop are always found around water, and mate for life. They build massive and impressive nests that look like it takes years to build. The nest almost seems too large for the bird itself. They tend to nest in calmer areas of rivers, and dams, or dried up river beds. This video of the Hamerkop was taken on the Makhadzi River, which had some water in it, close to Longwe Lookout and the Matambeni Bird Hide.
Just to dive deeper into the nesting habits of the Hamerkop... One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hamerkop's behaviour is its intricate nest-building skills. The Hamerkop constructs one of the largest bird nests in the avian world, often resembling a massive untidy structure made of sticks, mud, and other materials. These nests can reach sizes of up to 1.5 meters in diameter and are typically located near water bodies such as rivers, lakes, or marshes. The Hamerkop's nest-building process involves both the male and female birds working tirelessly to collect materials and construct the nest over several weeks.
Hamerkops are known for their distinctive vocalisations, which include a variety of calls and vocal displays used for communication. The main bird call of the Hamerkop can be heard in the background of this video. Their calls range from harsh croaks and squawks to softer, more melodious notes, depending on the context and social interactions.
In many African cultures, the Hamerkop holds symbolic significance and is often associated with superstitions and myths. Some African tribes believe that disturbing or harming a Hamerkop nest can bring bad luck or misfortune, leading to the bird's colloquial name as the "Lightning Bird" in some regions.
