    So pyrography is pretty much just a fancy word for woodburning?

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but it's a real art in itself in that the intensity of the burning is a skill to create some amazing results. Most beginners will just do a heavy burn, which is great for a basic result.
      Checkout the channel th-cam.com/channels/4EqQlIocvjNoQfH_4eiQug.html where Valerie shows the real skill in this art to create some stunning images. This takes a lot of time, patience and practice. Also requires you to be quite arty which I lack those skills.

      @@PaulLockwood Thanks for taking the time to explain. I looked into it some more myself and found out that the term pyrography applies to many different medias like leather, gourds, cotton fabric, antlers, and pretty much anything that can be controlled burned. To where woodburning is pyrography on just specifically wood. I learned something today!

      Thank you, you will have endless hours of fun with this. If you are new to Pyrography then check out a channel called "Valerie Connell / DrawingwithFire" and you will learn a lot from her with her weekly live shows, she changed my whole approach to pyrography. There is also a Facebook group Valarie has setup called "Drawing With Fire Pyrography Group"

    Hi Paul. So glad you went with the Peter Child in the end. There is a huge range of applications for it and of course skills required for each. I'll be interested to see how you use it in your work over the coming months.

      Thanks John. Don't think I've used it since I recorded this about 2 weeks ago. Still sits in the shop all unpacked. Hopefully I will come up with some good projects.

    A little nicer than the old soldering iron I've been using!

      I have tried in the past with a soldering iron but just didn't work out. So decided to take the plunge with this. Hopefully long term I will get the moneys worth.

      Soldering iron almost sorta kinda works. Very frustrating!!

    Hi Paul,
    I've done a a few pyro projects, I've also found the courser grain wood more difficult to control, heat is definitely a factor and continually moving the pen, don't stop in one spot or it will look blotchy.
    Best of luck with more projects
    Rob

      @PaulLockwood  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rob, Yes I've found starting at a low heat and increase if required. So far I've only tried Oak which is probably far from the best wood to use.

    I foolishly bought one of those cheap Chinese ones off Amazon which need banning to be quite honest it burnt out the first time i used it ,a lesson learned

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s hard when you’ve never used one before. Sometimes buying cheap you can get a bargain. These are not cheap which is why not everyone buys them.

      Thank you Granville for letting me know, that's great news. I would suggest you watch Valarie Connell /DrawingWithFire, after watching her channel it changed the whole way I deal with pyrography. There is far more than just burning in deep dark lines.

    Hi Paul , I have been thinking of getting one of these pyro machines and after watching your video I am definitely ordering one before this week is out. Great review and subbed ..... I thought I subbed some time back ... must have had a senior moment lol

      Thank you Bram. Not a cheap item but well worth the money. I've been using it recently just on minor things like snowman features etc. and it's so nice quick and easy.

    I have had the same issue with the white spots doing the pyrography on pens or when using a punk wood like something that is spalted and some burls. After all sanded and ready for the ca finish I will use a medium ca and put on a few coats the sand with the first grit of micro mesh to make sure its smooth. Check it and if still any uneven areas repeat. There may be areas of ca and wood and this will be fixed when you move on the rest of your normal ca finishing process.

      @PaulLockwood  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Loren, yes I was thinking that I needed to fill the burn areas after which should resolve it.

    Would you recommend this for a beginner? I've visited too many forums and read too many reviews which left me a bit confused. I am not too bad when it comes to drawing and I like to add some details too so with that in mind what would you recommend. I am from uk so I'd prefer something here as some brands are not available in the uk, price is not a problem luckily. Also what is your opinion on some of the cheap ones sold on amazon for 10 to 25 pounds?

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Togce. I actually have a video coming up next month which will cover parts of this.
      My first concern was heat control. All wood will have a different level of heat required to make it burn. Therefore if you have an element that is too hot it becomes a lot harder to make those lighter burns, on the opposite side you don't want to spend 10 minutes creating a small burn line because it's not hot enough. So look for something with a heat control. Also those with a temperature dial listing the temperature can hardly be accurate as it depends on what thickness of tip you have, so pay no attention to that, something with some sort of gauge is useful.
      The Peter Childs uses a small wire. I only use the two shapes supplied, but there is a coil of wire to create your own shapes. Just look on TH-cam for creating the tips, I'm sure there are loads out there.
      If money is no object then I'd say the Peter Childs is a good buy. Not sure what is out there that is better, but look around at what results others have had. If you are on Instagram check out penfold_pyrography. He claims not to be an expert but he has some amazing skills and I'm sure he also users the Peter Childs.
      I opted for this compared to the cheap ones because even though I may never use it enough to be skillful enough, I wanted something that is capable of doing more than what I originally wanted it for.
      I can't tell you that you should buy this one, but I think you would be very happy with it. Just is there anything better? I don't know as in the end for me it was this one or the one Axminster sell, this seems to be a lot more popular.
      Hope that helps, but please just take that as my opinion for you to add to your collection.

    If you have google + there is a pyrography group on there that you can follow, if you start doing pictures the fumes can be a problem some of the places thar sell pyrography machines sell an extractor but the are expensive. It sits on the work bench where you are working, Marlins sell the same extractor with extra carbon filters for a quarter of the price and does exactly the same job.

      Kimberly Greenhill why? It was bought from a reputable UK wood turning supplier, came in what looks like a genuine box. Plus anyone else who has seen this or has one doesn’t question it.
