    This was great and hard to watch.
    I had to thumb the highway of tears from PR to PG when I was 22. I was stranded after I made some bad choices and was left there by a fishing boat I was working on.
    The love and help I received was immense. A lovely, though addict, couple let me sleep on their couch and gave me fresh socks, a plate of food, and a talking to.
    A bus driver picked me up, bought me a bucket of chicken, and had a priest pray for me.
    Once I was in PG, a man in a wheel chair offered to let me sleep on the floor of his hospital room, though I declined that one.
    It can be scary out there. Glad you made it back home to your mom.

    I’ve noticed when hitchhiking that people treat you as a sort of shoulder to lean on. They realize that they’ll never see you again and that you’re stuck with them for X number of minutes/hours. Hearing the average Joe/Jane blow talk about what they’ve gone through really humbles you to the plight that everyone goes through. The woman that dropped the heavy psych ward lore definitely needed someone to just listen to her without fear of judgement.

      It sounded like she endured narcissist abuse (from the smear campaign). It took me a year to feel normal again after I went through it so I feel for her. It can make someone appear bipolar with the rumination and ranting trying to make sense of the unimaginable.

    I feel for that woman that picked you up, the one with the blurred face. She seemed like she had been through a lot in her life, and just needed someone to talk to, you could tell that she was just lonely. who knows, you could have just saved her life from just giving her a little conversation. From her to open up, you could tell that it was still on her mind. If she's reading this, just know that if you're looking, there's love out there, and I promise you that it gets better. If you feel like you're at the lowest point in your life, then there is only one other way to go.

    That's really, REALLY interesting. In my country it's usually truck or mini truck who doesn't mind stopping for hitchhikers.
    Basically every personal drivers are scared of unknown strangers asking for a ride but truck drivers are usually chill and been on the road for too long without companions so they welcome hitchhikers

    • @code8825
      @code8825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the reason why those large trucks that he was talking about don’t stop is because they’re on the job and how they’re paid to work. Truckers are really given an unfair deal, and often slowing down to any degree can be punished financially. It’s why truckers don’t stop to go to the washroom generally and pee in bottles- because stopping for a few minutes will take money off their paycheque. I assume it’s the same with stopping to pick up and drop off a hitchhiker- sure it wouldn’t be very long, but I think every second counts. That was just my assumption as a Canadian when that part came up

    • @inablackout1539
      @inablackout1539 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Nonyah123 If this person wanted to hitchhike now, then she'd need more than just mace. She'd need to plan her destination ahead of time and have the adequate equipment. And no matter where you live, DO NOT HITCHHIKE ALONE UNLESS THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT. This is in no way do deter anyone from having fun but safety comes first. Hitchhiking has the potential to be dangerous and you have to be smart about it. It's especially dangerous for girls and women (unfortunately).
      ALSO, mace may not affect anyone under the influence. So if you think you might encounter a hostile druggie, pepper spray serves as a better companion. Sorry for the long comment, but all this stuff is something people should know regardless of gender.
      (Do not hitchhike alone unless you are that desperate)

    People from other countries are definitely more used to/open to hitchhikers for sure! One thing i can also say for sure is it depends on the state ur in... When i lived in Colorado it was so easy to get a ride, i had a friend who would hitchhike TO and FROM work every single day! Now nothing ever bad happened to him except he was in 2 different accident with people who picked him up. but other than that he absolutely LOVED it! NH is very similar. and the Thing about Truckers it not a guaranteed no you just have to catch them at Truck Stops. I know another guy who was a life long train hopper, he was cool as hell a real life Hobo. missing a leg from a time he fell and got caught underneath. didnt stop him tho! he kept on train hoppin!

    I'm turning 41 this year. When I was 19, I left my parents' house, and went on a "pilgrimage". My mode of traveling was hitchhiking. I traveled my entire country "South Africa 🇿🇦", and 3 of our neighboring countries. It was the best 2 years of my life. I think it's safe to say that, that culture is still alive over here. Its not as dangerous, but its understandable that not everyone will give you a hitch, as a result of how society has become, and how hitching has gotten this bad wrap. Either way, I'd take a hitch on any given day. There's just something special about the fact that you share a few personal hours with a stranger whom you might never get to see again.

    I always told myself that I couldn't do it because "im in NB, you can't do anything in NB". You truly are inspiring, I hope one day I can do the kind of stuff you're doing. I'm 20 now and I worry that I'll miss my shot if I don't do something soon.
    I feel quite restricted though, I think my biggest fear is my family trying to stop me, they've always been overbearing and I haven't truly felt autonomous yet especially considering I haven't gotten to move out due to the housing prices in the maritimes recently.

    I've hitchhiked all over the world and recommend it to everyone, but always keep your wits about you and be able to defend yourself in the rare occasion you encounter a dangerous person, which still has not happened to me. As for places to stay, always carry a tent or hammock & tarp in case you can't find someone to couchsurf with. Also homeless shelters and churches exist in most towns and are usually willing to give you a bed/shelter for the night. Other places I've crashed are airports, ferry ports, police stations (police are often fine with you rolling out a sleeping mat inside if the weather is awful), or abandoned structures. I've even slept inside abandoned boats sitting on the ground. Also big busy gas stations are great places to get a ride, either asking people or waiting at the exit ramp where all the vehicles are going slow. Talking to drivers of stationary trucks is often the best option for long distance rides. Hitching as a duo can have its advantages. 1 guy 1 girl is a friendly looking combo. 2 guys or more can be very difficult tho. As you gain more experience hitching, you can make incredible distance in a short period of time. You gain a sense of the ideal hitching spots. Pretty much always avoid hitching spots where the cars aren't going slow, as the chances someone will slow down for you is very slim. Also don't wear sunglasses as drivers usually want to see your face, and wear a hi-vis jacket so they notice you more easily

    This was very cool dude I just got done watching all eight parts
    you should do it again maybe you could travel to either one of these places Michigan , Georgia , Florida or another pretty cool idea you could pick up hitchhikers

  • @clover7359

    I've had multiple opportunities to pick up hitchhikers but my personal safety has always been the reason I never stopped. I never carried a weapon to defend myself and thinks can turn for the worse so quickly, the risk of personal harm is pretty significant compared to the minor reward of sharing compassion to another human.

    after watching the first epsiode of the 'i crossed america on' series i decided to check out your oldest videos and while the quality has improved a lot this is still really good. id like to try hitchhiking one day. ive wanted to since watching in to the wild but the dodgy stories of kidnappings do put me off.

    15:10 when you know you wont ever see that person again and no matter what you tell that stranger, it wont have an influence on your life it frees you of a lot of restraints.

    This is my second vid I'm watching on Nov 1st, 2024. The first vid was youtube recommended and it was about meeting people at the Trump rally. lol
    Its amazing to see how many wonderful people there are in the world. I hope the lady suffering from depression is doing better now. Those who are struggling, please don't feel ashamed, find someone to talk to. Remember, life is a series of moments, tomorrow is another day you can make the best of it. If its not good, find something bigger than yourself (your worries, your sadness) to give you motivation to live. Life can be tough, but it can be wonderful.
