Cogently expressed! What Mr. Mwenda is saying is not new, but I've never heard it expressed this well. I still believe there are intelligent ways of doing development work that don't involve direct transfer payments from governments in the West to those in the developing world. Fostering Civil Society in these countries is also a necessary step in creating a sustainable future.

He changed his tune...he nolonger sings the same song. He is amo g the abusers of Ugandans democracy. He serves the junta, the nepotism is paramount in Uganda today than never before.

TED started out in Monterey, California, but expanded to at least a couple of other cities in the U.S. & also expanded to TED Global. I am almost certain this speech/talk took place in Tanzania at a 'TED Global' event - not in California.

I totally agree with you, the ongoing Economic Partnership Agreements btwn EU and Africa demands African countries to open upto 90% of their markets for EU products. The foreign investors will be allowed to invest as much as they can in the countries, this is very damaging coz EU is a rich block and the African investors cannot compete with them at the moment.
@luizcadu I too at first thought he said that education doesn't create wealth. But when I read between the lines, I know what he means by that. Aid-supported education system is quite shallow and negligible, almost exclusively at primary level. That type of education is not enough to create the wealth required to uplift a country. At the end, he says, "support the research institutions,' which of course is a typical education system that starts from the primary to higher productive one.

Why? You said you bet Andrew Mwenda was (not) invited to any other TED conferences but you didn't say why. He gave a very interesting speech & he's a good, engaging speaker. Whether it was accurate & thorough about everything I do not know, but the subject is a huge subject to cover in only 19 minutes. He himself is an African & the subject/dialogue should have input from Africans, so it seemed this was a contribution to the dialogue whether some would disagree with some of what he said or not.
What he discussed on this platform then is totally different on whst he is doing or speaking today. He is one of the cartels enjoying the taxpayers money. He is up to mo good .
There's absolutely nothing wrong with helping people. It's good that you want to help people, just make sure you know what you're doing.
Africa does not need charity. Sending their governments billions of dollars doesn't do anything. What they need is investment.

Very interesting. Among many of his great points, he's so right in that what we see here in North America from the medias coverage of Africa is Only about Famine and Aids and sympathetic positions.
Such a weak view of Africa.
He changed the tune...he is a beneficiary of the aids money today. Its so unfortunate that what you hear from him on this TED platform is totally different with what he is doing or speaking today.

@shussey100 i've read that your country has improved much over the years, it does well in international rankings of economic growth and freedom. is this progress visible? are the poor better off? i'm from chile, and i'm curious about countries that go from statist policies to free market oriented ones.

Africa has so many intelligent and talented people, yet none of them are in politics. Why is that?
@estorpai I highly doubt Bono is intentionally doing evil. That's the thing that so many people miss, but it's one of the most important things we need to recognize when solving problems. It's oftentimes the most well-intentioned people who help create and perpetuate senseless evil and destruction. We often fail to remember that intentions are just thoughts in your head. Unless you have psychic powers, your thoughts have NO effect on the physical world. Only your actions for good or for bad.

Why can't TED organize a debate between some of these corrupt African leaders, the world bank, and some of these thinkers African thinkers? It would be interesting.
As Africans, we are good at shifting blame away from the real problem. Foreign aid is not the problem, why? Because it has worked in South Korea, Israel, Singapore, etc. The case isnt the same in Africa because of corruption, incomptence, among other reasons!!
raw material in Africa is too expensive for the west, plus the electronic production is a money making machine in the west and china so the civils wars that is giving them access to the raw material they need on cheap price by founding wars in an African country like RDC.CONGO by exchanging mine for weapons . the west cant play by the rules africa will be too rich for them to accept.

This is when Andrew was objective, nowadays he works full time for the son of the president. The same president he was talking about back then wants his son to take over from him and that's who Andrew decided to work for. Just for comparisons Uganda now has 557 member s of parliament, more than 300 presidential advisors, and more than 300 semi autonomies bodies which all have directors, commissioners etc. Things have become extremly worse
Good eloquence...poorly constructed facts. I guess, Mwenda is driven by the ambition to give Africa a better face...he says only six countries are in civil war, he doesn't say that many are bedridden with bad leadership, corruption. He also contradicts himself. For instance, he says, sending someone to school will not create wealth. But he goes ahead to say that knowledge is an important part of wealth creation. I have no doubt that his speaking engagement is organized as a result of aid!

The old argument that Europeans and Africans have different IQs will not help the situation it will just anger people. African countries should do what China and Japan did study the economies of other nations, invest in human capital, private investment, research institutions within African countries as the speaker says in the video. Here's a workable idea hire local citizens and train them in specializations not just for the short term but the long term.
I just wish he could talk slower, and in a more "neutral" accent. But everything I could understand, I totally agreed with.
Rich countries give aid to African countries just to look good and are not interested in actually improving human lives there.
@Janusha That is flase friend. That may have been how they were initially decided but if that was true then many Caribbean countries should be considered 2nd world. The first second and thrid world titles now are connected with the level of development and political bias as well as trade relations with the so called "1st world" countries. What you say flies in the face of america being considered a first world country today.

The guy is dead on. The only point in which I don't agree with him is that education does not create wealth. You gotta have a good education in order to be a good, efficient, competitive worker, which will attract investment and wealth to you.

Brain sizes vary considerably within any species, but this variation is not usually related to intelligence. من امیر پایکاری متولد 1361 هجری شمسی از تهران پایتخت ایران هستم میخواستم مطلبی راجع به زمینهای حاصلخیزی که در آب و هوای خشک قرار دارند بگویم اگر شما برای رشد دادن گیاهانی که ریشه آنچنان بلندی ندارند مثل پرورش نهالهای درخت وبرخی بوته ها درزمین کشاورزی نیاز به آب فراوان دارند ما میتوانیم تا یک عمقی تا چند متر ازسطح به داخل زمین چیزی مانند قیر و گونی و یا آسفالت را بسازیم و دقیقا مانند سرعت فروکش کردن آب در مناطق مرطوب زمین در آسفالت مورد نظر سوراخهای کوچک قرار دهیم و اینگونه میتوانیم خیلی از گیاهان خوراکی که آب فراوان نیاز دارند را در جاهای خشک زمین برویانیم اینگونه در مناطق خشکسالی شده میتوانیم گیاهانی را برویانیم که آب فراوان نیاز دارند به اینگونه گندم نیازمندترین چیزی است که باید کاشته شود و در درجه دوم هر گیاهی که نیاز بود کاشته شود در ضمن با ایجاد اختلاف دما در ساعتهای معین شبانه روزدر گلخانه ها هر نوع گیاهی را رشد دهیم فقط این اختلاف دما به طور طبیعی و آرام بیست و چهار ساعت یک دفعه است ولی شما ( نیروهای کشاورزی ) باید در گلخانه ها چند بار این اختلاف دما را ایجاد کنیم ولی خوب به فصل بهار نگاه کنید بارندگی میشود و باد می وزد و با بخارشدن آب ازروی اجزای بیرونی درخت باعث سرد شدن رگهای کل درخت میشود بعد از آن آفتاب می تابد و دوباره گیاه قبل از تمام شدن روز گرم میشود و این بارشها و بخارشدن در فصل بهار موجب رویش بیشتر گیاه در فصل بهار میشود و درفصل تابستان به علت نبود بارندگی و اختلاف دما نشدن کمتر رویش گیاه کمتر میشود واین رابدانید که آب در گیاه حرکت برگشت به سمت عکس جهت رشدش راندارد ندارد و با اقباض گیاه در سرمای هوای شب پوست گیاه کشیده میشود و رشد میکند و وقتی گیاه منقبض میشود آب درون خود را برگشت نمیکند در جاهایی از جهان ممکن است باد بوزد ولی بارندگی کم باشد اگر خاک منطقه مناسب است سریع شروع به کاشتن به این شیوه نیروهای کشاورزی کنند تا قیمت مواد غذایی با زیاد شدنش در بازار ها کم شود اینگونه ارز نیاز را به کشورتان را بیاورید تا با همت درست عدالت دوره امام زمان (ع ) را در این زمانه بچشید خواهشمندم کشورهای مختلف با هم نجنگند ولی از خود دفاع بکنند خوب است بدانید در منطقه جنوب دریای خزر ایران به علت اینکه رطوبت در روی برگها و شاخه ها است و باد که میوزد برای بخارشدن آب گرما را از سطح برگ میگیرد مرتب دمای گیاه گرم و سرد میشود و رویش گیاهان چندین برابر میشود خواهشمندم با یک لایه آسفالت در زیر زمین کشاورزی که با چند سوراخ کوچک در آن است جلوی این گرسنگی و تلف شدن مردم جهان را بگیرید خواهش میکنم گرسنگان جهان به ایران بیایند و با انجام کارهای ساختمانی و باغبانی بهترین زندگی را بکنند

@Janusha Instead of talking about fairy tales like evolution out of Africa (It is a very imaginative theory and has no proof to base it on) why not focus on the socio economic factors that influence intelligence? That is not withstanidn the fact that most race based IQ tests usually favour the race of the scientists performing the experiments anyway.

Colonialism hurt Africa, but you're 2 stuck on the idea of what people thought years ago & stuck on the idea that wanting 2 help someone is 'evil' & it means helpers think the people they want 2 help are "unintelligent" & "non self-sufficient." That's 2 simplistic. What about love & caring? Ireland would not be at peace if U.S. President Clinton didn't help them. What's wrong with helping people? NOTHING. & different countries have different weather/climate, so drought happens more some places.
The speaker is now supporting the government he was blaming. By the way Uganda is now doing worse than that today despite aid being poured. I like his speech though.

The speaker is right. Unfortunately, the economies you referenced did not grow as a result of aid; they emerged out of things he emphasized--adoption of aggressive market policies that have nothing to do with aid. Read Easterly's work...
