  • Join us for a a day of opulence and magic! When is the best time of year to go to Versailles to avoid the crowds? We're taking you for a special tour, including a private tour of the King's Apartments!
The Palace of Versailles (Château de Versailles) is a former royal residence built by King Louis XIV located in Versailles, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Paris, France. About 15,000,000 people visit the palace, park, or gardens of Versailles every year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
Louis XIII built a simple hunting lodge on the site of the Palace of Versailles in 1623. With his passing came Louis XIV who expanded the château into the beginnings of a palace that went through several changes and phases from 1661 to 1715. It was a favorite residence for both kings, and in 1682, Louis XIV moved the seat of his court and government to Versailles, making the palace the de facto capital of France. This state of affairs was continued by Kings Louis XV and Louis XVI, who primarily made interior alterations to the palace, but in 1789 the royal family and capital of France returned to Paris. For the rest of the French Revolution, the Palace of Versailles was largely abandoned and emptied of its contents, and the population of the surrounding city plummeted.
Napoleon I, following his coronation, used Versailles as a summer residence from 1810 to 1814, but did not restore it. Following the Bourbon Restoration, when the king was returned to the throne, he resided in Paris and it was not until the 1830s that meaningful repairs were made to the palace. A museum of French history was installed within it, replacing the apartments of the southern wing.
The palace and park were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979 for its importance as the center of power, art, and science in France during the 17th and 18th centuries. The French Ministry of Culture has placed the palace, its gardens, and some of its subsidiary structures on its list of culturally significant monuments.

Well ladies, you just made my Sunday. There are "NO" words to describe that beautiful Palace. The interior, the exterior, the gift shop was a delight. This is one place everyone must see, but if you can't, Vivenne and Ashley, bringing us along is (almost) like being there, the next best thing. Thank you again for sharing. Love from N.Y.

I squandered my once in a life-time trip to Versailles. It was May and unseasonably hot. It seemed like the whole world was there, but the bus driver said "This was nothing!" It was just all too much! There was no air moving, even in the jardins. We went up to the village of Versailles, itself, and found a lovely café with a terrace -- and a breeze! We sipped our cool drinks and waited until we saw people heading back towards the bus. It was my first "real" vacation, at age 41 and not by any means my only "mistake." But I don't regret it, with vloggers like you to show me what I missed! 🙂

Versailles is spectacular! Years ago it was “April in Paris” for my French adventure. The weather was chilly but the crowds were immense, especially at Versailles! I would say the only disadvantage of a winter tour are the gardens and fountains. However, the interior shots are so much nicer without the throngs of people! I love how you could take your time and get so many detailed closeups! Thank you, thank you! I will be watching this video numerous times to stop and study the things I missed or don’t fully remember! 😍🤩😍
The coffered ceiling with carved rosettes was a favorite of mine and I have a closeup shot of one of the rosettes framed in my bedroom! Versailles is partly responsible for changing my decor aesthetic from contemporary to a more ornate European traditional! (Perhaps not as ornate as Versailles but an ornate gilded mirror here and there are my salutes to Versailles!) The craftsmanship is beyond words in every single square inch! I think I could force myself to live in all that splendor... if I absolutely had too! 😉😂🤣 Absolutely glorious!!! 😍🥰😍

So pleased to see you in the pink, Vivienne. That flocked velvet fabric on the walls in the enfilade doesn't really belong there. It was put there in the 19th century, and later in the 20th century by curator Gerald van der Kemp. It's being removed, room by room, as the walls are restored. Versailles cannot be seen in one day, as you found out. It takes at least 3 visits to see it all. They are restoring apartments constantly, so it's always fun to see the completion of the latest project.

What an opulent palace. The artwork, gold, furniture are all magnificent. Can’t imagine how cold it must have been in the winter. You can see it reflected in the statues and art, where they are layered in clothes and cloaks/furs. Wallpapers were gorgeous and what a variety. The Hall of Mirrors….no words! Beautiful vlog Vivienne! I visited the Palace de Versailles in the 1960s. I bought a blue, white and gold coloured watch there, which I still have. On my second visit in the 1980s, I chose to visit the Grand Trianon, which Napolean decided to use as his Versailles location/ Le Petit Trianon (Marie Antoinette's private residence) and Le Hameau (Marie Antoinette's village, which she visited as a play area while dressed as a shepherdess).

The first time I went to Versailles was in January of 1980. We waited on the terrace in the back of the palace for a guide to unlock the door. My group of twenty-some people were the only people in the palace other than the guide. It was awesome! I've been back to see it twice since then; both were in the summer. The crowd was incredible! Go see it in the winter if you have the opportunity.

When we went it was so crowded and dirty I was appalled. Seeing it with you has been a much better experience. The recoding I got didn’t work so I was blind because they wouldn’t replace it. All in all I had an awful experience. Thank you for this delightful tour! It somewhat made up for the bad experience I had.

Hi Vivienne and Ashley, the grandest of all palaces. The breathtaking beauty of Versailles and its spectacular craftsmanship is wondrous. Wish we could be there with you. Princess Dolly loved Marie Antoinette’s bedroom. She is very much like her. So happy you are feeling better. The filming of Versailles was perfection! Much love from us M&D ❤ ❤xoxo

Hi ivian & Simon, I'm in catch up mode with your channel. I went to Versailles in October 1989. I loved it then and I loved the tour I just watched. I'm hoping to get back to France & Versailles soon. Mark & Scott

Yep that was definitely perfect timing to visit V....cold drab and gray weather just to ad some extra mysticism... 😁

It's been 35 years since I was there and your tour brought back so many memories. The opulence and detail is breathtaking. I remember it being quite a workout to see all the grounds too. Thanks Vivienne!

So glad you were able to meet up with Stephanie, Phillip, Andrew and Ricardo. Not a fan of gilt, and nothing does more gilt than Versailles. That said, the levels of artistry and artisanship are superb. The workmanship that went into restoring Versailles is remarkable. Thank you for taking us along.
