Rocky made some really great one liners as well as his straight up golden speech to his son. His son had a nice character arc. He started out hating the feeling of living in his father's shadow. Eventually he accepted that his own life journey has room to include supporting and being proud of his father.

I wish they’d given more credit to Paulie for his journey. I mean in the end, is he a perfect guy 100% changed to good? No…but look at how much he changed from that guy at teh beginning. Here we see him really hurting, not because someone tells him how badly he treated Adrian, but because remembering her makes him remember how he was a piece of shit to her. He’s doing that to himself because of how much he has changed. Sure he doesn’t want to keep dredging it up because there’s nothing he can do to fix it, but he hurts from it. And here he’s supporting Rocky, he goes along every year even though it torments him (sure he bitches and tries to move it along to minimize, but he’s still there for Rocky).

The lack of empathy for Paulie from many reactors to the series is always interesting for sure. As an eighties baby who grew up watching these films I mostly viewed him as more a tragic figure. He was very clearly a broken man who didn't see path for himself beyond the cards he'd been dealt. Yea he was an asshole most of the time and I was no less annoyed with many of his decision than everyone else but he did have layers and I find myself feeling more sadness for him than outright disdain.

The idea of putting Steps, Marie and even Spider into this movie is to show just how much Rocky cares about people, he is humble and never got to big of an ego or forgot the struggle for people growing up were he did...of course Steps and Marie were there at the ring, Marie and Rock became close, close 'friends i mean' and Steps temporarily a surrogate son when his own child ghosted him..i dont get the confusion..anyway still luv ur channel despite the comments on this one and love this film....

Paulie is a flawed character. He has self-destructive tendencies and he pushes away the people that care about him. The guy has issues. Rocky is the only one that stayed by his side through all these years, even when he was mean to him. Paulie considers Rocky to be his one and only friend. That's why he affectionately calls him "Rocko". Rocky considers Paulie to be his best friend even through all the flaws because that's the kind of guy Rocky is, once you are on Rocky's side, he never lets you go.
You guys should watch the deleted scenes of this movie. There's one deleted scene between Rocky and Paulie in the alleyway after Paulie got fired. It's really good. It adds more depth to Paulie's character. He misses his sister and regrets about how he treated her. He also says, "Now you're all I have, and you never let me down, and I treat you bad too. Why do I do that, Rocko?".
Paulie is very aware of his behaviour. Paulie was crazy and a constant mess up, but underneath you never doubted his loyalty.

Talia Shire (Adrian) Was originally in the script, but she and Stallone agreed that Rocky would not have the "beast inside him" if Adrian was still there. After in a interview she was asked why she wasn't in it, and she said "I am in it... the whole movie is about ME" - Rocky would be totally happy running the restaurant with here, and would have no reason to fight. They also felt they could not kill her IN the film, because most of us would not make thru the rest of the film.

  • @k.delpino1124

It took 3 years to write the script for part 6.
Catching the flavor of the original and just in time for the 30th Anniversary.
The fight was the first thing they filmed in Mandalay Bay, to be as real as possible.
Antonio Tarver (Mason 'The Line' Dixon) was a real-life boxer in his film debut.
Showing off that Rocky's opponents aren't always bad people.
Dixon himself had to prove that he was worthy of being a champion to let go of his ego.
Rocky's character has endured for so long and still stays humble.
The speech to Rocky Jr. is the best dialogue of the film and that will always be remembered.
This was the beginning of a whole new resurgence for Stallone as an actor & filmmaker.
Afterwards came John Rambo aka Rambo IV (2008), The Expendables trilogy (2010-2014),
Bullet To The Head and the Escape Plan trilogy (est in 2013), etc.
Not too mention, he raised his physique to unbelievable levels in his late 50s/early 60s.
Sly Stallone has truly proven as Lil' Marie said "The last thing to age is the heart".
RIP to Tony Burton (Duke Evers Sr.)

I thought everybody had a relative or a friend/friend of the family like Paulie and that's why he's such a great character. Someone who is always saying the wrong thing until either the say the right thing or says something _so_ wrong they need to be put in their place. But then things go back to how they were.
No matter what Paulie does or says, you know he's going to be the first one there to help when you really need it. Like taking over the car payments when you're I trouble with the least amount of making you feel worse about it...or being the first (and only) guy to slam a chair on a wrestler who's got you in a choke hold...
They'll be there for you when you need them...they just won't let you forget that... *ever!* They also think that should not only pay their ticket for every time they screw up, but also that you owe them every step of the way for whatever good comes into your life.
You love them, you blow up at them when they go too far, then the next holiday or family gathering you invite them over again.
I don't know...a family just wouldn't seem like a family to me without a Paulie in them...

Stallone has said that he tried writing this movie 100 different ways with Adrian in it, but there was no way that Adrian would ever want Rocky to fight. It worked much better for Rocky to be fueled by his grief.
I've gained a huge appreciation of Paulie as a character and it really shows Stallone's wisdom as a writer. From the start, we saw Rocky's compassion through his tolerance of Paulie. That's better than showing it towards Adrian, which could have been perceived as pity. Similarly, we saw Adrian's strength in the way she stood up to Paulie. That's better than putting her in a position to oppose Rocky. Without Paulie there as a character, it would have been so much harder to develop some of the most endearing traits of our two lead characters.

    1) Stallone said he was inspired by George Forman to make this movie, who came out of retirement later in life and actually won a Championship
    2) The reason for the slow pace in the beginning is that it had been 16yrs since Rocky V. So there was a lot of catching up to see in his life & the tone was more like the original, not the schlock that the later movies had.
    3) During this time Heavyweight boxing was also in a very bad place. There was no great American boxer and the top guys were boring boxers. Like the Klitschkos, who were very safe, boring fighters. Why Dixon was hated even though he had that undefeated record. So it plays well why people liked the simulation of the boxers and were interested in the Exhibition fight.

Rock is all heart, and anyone that gets a "Hey, how you doin'." feels that. Paulie's remark that Rock lives in the past, and the past was painful to Paulie, and that comment brought Rock down. Marie thanking him in the bar for talking to her as a kid helped pull him back up. It's an 'all things are connected/circular' moment. Which is why Rocky offered to help Marie and Steps. He was an athlete in his youth and a sports fan all his life and he was at that stage where he just couldn’t do what he used to. I was 26 and my bro was 23 and the 3 of us went to see this movie and I remember how my dad was while we were watching. Watching Rocky as this symbol of all the guys who got through their primes and remember how great they felt at the height of it all. This movie wasn’t particularly well received but I’ll always love it because it’s one of the last memories I have of him with a massive smile on his face. Later that year he was diagnosed with cancer and 3 years later he was gone. I watch this movie every so often just to remember that day. I think the truest thing anyones ever said about this series is that there’s a Rocky movie for every phase of life. I think that’s the power of storytelling.
