- Which actor sang the high note from Gethsemane the best? Let us know in the comments!
Featuring John Legend, Ted Neeley, Ben Forster and Michael Ball!
Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the Passion, the work interprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters, with much of the plot centered on Judas, who is dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus is steering his disciples. Contemporary attitudes, sensibilities and slang pervade the rock opera's lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events. Stage and film productions accordingly contain many intentional anachronisms.

No one does this song in my opinion better than NEELY
I HAVE WATCHED IT PROBABLU 35 or more times!
Gets me in the ❤ ALWAYS
AND… he went on and lived this role
Only Ian in my opinion
Ted is a Goat, but check out Steve Balasmo. He's a very, very close second if not on the same level. Amazing
You should look up videos of Ian McIntosh, the recent UK Tour Jesus, it was an unearthly experience witnessing his Gethsemane.
Ted is the man! By far the best
BY FAR!!!
John Legend didn't do the song justice but, he did a great high note and lots of passion. He was just not quite as distinct in the other parts of the song. Ted Neely and Ben Foster both did excellent in the styles of rock their productions embodied. Of the two, I give the nod to Ben Foster. He kept his voice in a higher pitch through the whole song. Michael Ball gave a unique performance that was pure Broadway. It lacked the rock soul but, had all the passion but lacked the high note.
Ben used chest and head voices..
@@tijay67 Yep, Legend used weak falsetto. Wrong for the moment.
I love John Legend for many things...but JCSS was not the role for him...just doesn't have the voice for it. Still love him!!!
Ted , Ian and Steve , are the best. I feel like everyone else took the easy way to approach or avoided the note bc it was out of their powerhouses.
John Legend is an amazing performer and singer. This out of his wheelhouse tho.
I always thought so. He's not so much a decent actor and the music of JCS is a challenge for most anyway. He was miscast for sure.
It was never in his wheelhouse to begin with. He shouldn't have been cast in such a role. Not his style nor vocal range..
John Legend might not have the range for the rol but his rendition was still v passionate, gave me chills! Steve Balsamo is my favorite, though ❤
Ted Neeley, greatest ever.
Dan Vasc absolutely slays it! and I've seen a few of them.
Ian gillan for me but why was he not included?
Ben was the best overall…I only like Ted because of his rock falsetto, I liked Michael’s version too but it was leaning more towards a classical style…John Legend (when in his style has an amazing voice) just seems like he was trying too hard, idk what he did towards the end that changes his vocal color but THAT was not it (sounded like he was gonna lose his voice)
Ben forster for me
I saw Ben Forster sing this live and he was note perfect and his performance was so emotional, I loved it. But I cannot deny that they all do a wonderful job. I can't choose between Ted, Steve or Ben the three of them are so fantastic.
Hands down Ted Neeley!!!!!
Ben Forster ! Fantastic and moving
Ben Forster
Ben Forster in the 2012 Arena Tour which I saw in Sheffield
Ted Neely! Always has been my favorite since I first encountered this musical.
Every guy in this video sing well ;but for me Ted Neely is in another level.the Best Performance totally!!!❤
Todas las interpretaciones son extraordinarias, pero la de Ted es definitivamente mi preferida!
It was an incredibly difficult decision, but I'm going with Ben Forster. Though, I would like to say that the I felt Michael Ball gave the best 'Alright I'll die' line. Such sadness, resignation, and despair in that one line.
Not to impugn all the brilliant performances shown, Steve Balsamo’s performance at the Lyceum back in 1999 (ish) was the finest and most jaw dropping rendition of Gethsemane I’ve ever heard.
Steve is the best!!!
ben forister
WHEN IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT BEN FORESTER. THE CLARITY. THE EMOTION.
Gillan all the way. The only one to not over sing it. And the original.
Neeley every time. The others did a great job but this is always Ted Neeley's
Ben Forster is incredible live as Jesus. So is Luke Street who preformed the role in Southampton this week. Two very different productions but amazing vocals. Ted’s version is incredible as well and he will always be the GOAT.
Ted Neeley is the absolute best! I know a lot of people argue that Ian Gillan, who was the original singer, prior to the movie even being filmed, is the best, but Ted Neeley will always have my vote! His voice just hits all the right spots and even just his timing of the words and the emphasis is certain places is spot on! They sure chose right when they picked him for the movie!!
Neely is my second favorite. IMHO Everyone seems to pause to gear up for that note. Gillan just flows right into it. It's scary beautiful. But Neely is great too!
Not a chance
Gethsemane is the most difficult piece out of the entire musical to perform. John Legend really should not have touched this role, sorry. Love Ben Always ❤
Ben Forster for sure, amazing performance
Of these 4, Ted Neely. In my opinion, no one tops Ian Gillan though. Would love to see Matt Heafy of Trivium or Howard Jones of Light The Torch cover it.
I saw a touring company in the 90s with Ted Neeley, Dennis Deyoung, and Irene Cara. It was astounding.
Definitely Ben forester and Ted Neeley
Ted Neeley is the best EVER!!!!!!
Steve Balsamo for the win by a mile!
Yed Neeley definitely set yhe standard for Gethsemane. On a par is a young Brazilian mtal sunger annd TH-camr called Daniel Vasconcelos who gies by the name Dan aVasc, s truly mesmerizing performance.
I have seen over a dozen productions of this classic, including Ted Neely and Carl Anderson live, but the best portrayal of Jesus I ever saw was a traveling production starring William Daniel Gray.
JL was out of his element but kind of enjoyed it. All others are fine but no one does it justice like Ted Neeley, his emotional connection is otherworldly.
Ted Neeley and then Ben Forster of these 4.
the original is the original - all other are great performers - but for me, Ted, unreachable
Unfortunately not in there but my favourite Jesus is Oedo Kuipers (and Otto Jaus as Judas)! I just love his interpretation of this song, I always get goosebumps when I hear it
Bonus points for Michael Ball not even bothering to try to hit a note out of his range. But the answer is always going to be Ted Neeley. He rocks it.
Neely by far the best!
Ted Neeley for sure!
Glenn Carter did a pretty good job too
Ian Gillan, Ted Neeley, Dan Vasc, Steve Balsamo., Ben Forster, ..Sebastian Bach.......Micheal Ball...
Last place John Legend
Listen Camilo sesto and leo Jiménez versions .
Ted Neely, close second Ben Forster…❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💪💪🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
6:06 Yeah! Ted Neeley...
Of the folks in this video, Neeley. My overall ranking would be
1) Steve Balsamo
2) Camilo Sesto
3) Ted Neeley
Steve is the best!!
TED NEELY!
Ted is the GOAT!!!! The best❤️❤️
La manera de cantar de Ted es simplemente de otro planeta.
No disrespect to the other singers, but Neely is the only one who nailed the tormented expression - the power of the song comes from the uniquely humanizing way it frames Jesus in his most vulnerable moment. The emotion is so raw you can forget sometimes that it's a song. The others felt. . . . too show tunes-y in comparison? Technically sound performances all round (wasn't a fan of the drop on the "Alright I'll die" part on all the non-Neely versions mind), but I'm still waiting for the true successor to Neely's Jesus.
MICHAEL BALL :
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.
I have seen Ben Foster do it live and it is spell binding but no one does it Ted Neely (in the movie)
John Farnham was my favourite check it out.
Ben Forster did it the best
For me it’s Ben and Michael. But all these singers did amazing jobs!
1: ben forster 2: Ted needley
ben forster def
Steve Balsamo does this song justice.
Ted Neely for the win.
Ted Neely probably comes pretty close to perfection but for me The Original Concept Album with Ian Gillan has the best version of Gethsemane.
My favorite versions are Ted Neely in English and Camilo Sesto in Spanish❤
This is a collection of very talented vocalists, but no one, and I do mean NO ONE can match Ian Gillan's power and range on this song.
Dan Vasc crushes both of them!
Ted Neeley
Ted Neeley my love forever❤❤❤
Camilo Sesto, 1975
John Legend punted on the "Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy."
Ben Forester put more strength into the song
dan vasc
No one…. NO ONE sings this like Ted…
Ian Gillen, Ted Neeley.
They alone are the Gethsemane Jesuses'
Ben Ben Ben 😊
Ted Neeley blew it out better than any of these others.
TED NEELY
1. Ted Neeley - the movie (timeless)
2. Steve Balsamo - best of theatre
Who the heck said Ben Forster lol. His chest/head resonance with the falsetto is *much* weaker compared to Neely/Balsamo. Any vocal coach will tell you that.
I know michael ball. he is a actor and english singer and presenter, he sang jesus christ superstar songs.
I like John Legend, but Stive Balsamo is best of the best!!!
Geronimo Rauch, live, Coruña, Spain. Unfortunately, there is no record.
Have to say John has this one. They are all great. Mist Tim Minchin he is also great.
From this list:
1. Ted Neeley
2. Ben Forster
3. Michael Ball
100. John Legend (his presentation was disappointing, he can't reach the note, seems he is afraid to reach high notes).
I agree
Dan Vasc
Ted Neely and Ben Foster get the high notes and the intense dramatic presentation. I'll give Foster the extra point for doing it live and not on film. Legend and Ball sang the notes...period. Lacked the passion of Neely and Foster.
John Legend!!
Astonishing
all were good, but Ted was miles above the rest
John Farnham, Australian cast 1992 by far. Unsurpassable. Not falsetto either!
I have watched different performances from various actors all over the world. And I believe that Ted Neely still is the absolute best.He gets that no with no effort.John lennon is a good actor it's good singer but just didn't quite have the emphasis To reach that high C note The first one on this video did a fairly decent job. So I actually put him in second place. This last guy just can't do I have.
Seen some others in performances Fon TH-cam that are private. Clubs or theater groups and some of them do a pretty good job too I even saw one that had jesus as a woman and I think teddy did it better than her she does
Only Ted Neely
Ted Neely,by far.
I love John legends but this wasn’t his song. Ted Neely may not be as good a singer as John but Ted has all the feeling. He isn’t performing. He is arguing with God, showing emotion. I was blessed to see Ted Neely preform three times. He will always be my Jesus Christ Superstar. I did hear Colt Wilkinson and he was very good.
It's crazy how the original film got the definitive version of all the main characters right the first try.
Steve Balsamo, check out live concert in 2004. Ian Gillan the original album
Even though Michael Ball was never in this role he sings the best version of this song.
Steve Balsamo and Ted Neeley for me
DAN VASC
Ted Neeley! Far better range and intonation in his voice....just excellent....followed by Ben Forster!
Ian Gillan
Ted Neeley hands down
