That is excactelly what happened to me - Ian Gillian and Ted Neely were vocally the "kings" of this masterpiece song until Dan Vanc appeared and blew litterely my mind away both vocally and emotionally.

My friend, I consider myself somewhat of a Gethsemane snob…I’ve heard them all. I always preferred Neeley’s version…but then…I heard you. My god man! You absolutely OWN this song! One of the most difficult songs in stage history, and keep in mind, EVERYONE compares the vocalist to a dozen other versions and you blow past them. The body of your voice, the nuances, your range…and not just because you have a remarkable way of delivering the song, others can hit high notes as well, almost for the sake of hitting the notes…you blew it away because you let us see that you NEED to sing it the way you do so that it touches our hearts and souls. Your vocal range staggers the mind. You are simply incredible…take that from a JCS snob…unbelievable brother!

For instance, I would have never cast John Legend in the role of Jesus Christ in the live version. I suspect that was done to appeal to a younger audience.
Dan doesn't just perform the song. He transforms into Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He exudes the pain and emotion, the isolation Jesus must have been feeling in that moment. Such an incredibly powerful and emotional performance!

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar 3 times, when it first opened. I was lucky to stand so close to Ian Gillan, who portrayed Jesus, during sound checks, I could could have shook hands. For most singers, covering "Gethsemane", when they get to those high notes, they usually scream. And that's OK, it's a very difficult and challenging piece. But you are the only singer I have ever heard, since the great Ian Gillan, who hit those notes perfectly. What an amazing talent!
I too am listening to this in August 2024 - am 80 and love your singing especially this song and the emotion you bring to the story. We tend to forget the agony Jesus felt in the Garden as He prayed to His Father. He knew years before He would die that we might live but now here is the reality of that sacrifice. The vocal performance is exceptional, Ive come to expect that from Mr Vasc,..but this is an absolutely poignant Christ,.. a Son, speaking to his Father,.. rebelling, and angry, scared, and yet still trying to please his parent. The juxtaposition of duty and fear, doubt, and even a little self pity,.. were just a perfect blend. The acting expression was, again, precise, amazingly timed, and all done whilst delivering a belter of a vocal. This gentleman just keeps raising the bar...
That's because you haven't seen the way Camilo Sesto sang it in Spanish. Andrew Lloyd Webber himself said that it was undoubtedly one of the best ever made.

As someone who grew up with and was deeply moved by the original Jesus Christ Superstar, who knew every song, sang along with and cried along with most of them, and played many on the piano, I am blown away by Dan's performance. I didn't think anyone could sing this song better than Ted Neely, but Dan took it to a new level. Vocally and emotionally, Dan outdid him in every way.

I never saw the show but I remember the album from the 1970s and from tv. Dan is the first great Jesus in JCS.

I have never experienced HEARING AND SEEING a singer such as DAN VASC. ITS SHOCKING TO THE EMOTIONS OF BEING REAL. I EXPERIENCED DISCOVERING AND HEARING HIM FIRST ON U TUBE, " A metal singer singing AMAZING GRACE. I STARTED NOT TO LISTEN TO A METAL SINGER BUT DID.!!!!! I THOUGHT I WAS SURELY LEAVING THIS WORLD , LEAVING FOR HEAVEN . I WAS OVERTAKEN!!! MY SOUL WAS FULL OF HEAVENS GLORY, ANOINTING. I STILL.LISTEN TO IT ,OVER OVER ,OVER AND OVER , STILL ....THE SAME EMOTIONS TAKE OVER MY HEART AND SOUL. 😢 EVERYONE SAYS THE SAME!!! HE IS CHANGING THE WORLD!!! HE IS ABSOLUTELY UNBELEVABLE AND DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. HES BEYOND DESCRIBING. OTHER SINGERS ALMOST HAVE TO JUST GET OUT OF THE WAY.?????????😮

This heart breaking acting and singing performance is worthy of the highest honors ever given. So much beauty and pain. Dan's beautiful rich baritone almost operatic voice is without match. It ends almost suddenly and leaves me wanting more.

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar 3 times, when it first opened. I was lucky to stand so close to Ian Gillan, who portrayed Jesus, during sound checks, I could could have shook hands. For most singers, covering "Gethsemane", when they get to those high notes, they usually scream. And that's OK, it's a very difficult and challenging piece. But you are the only singer I have ever heard, since the great Ian Gillan, who hit those notes perfectly. What an amazing talent!
I too am listening to this in August 2024 - am 80 and love your singing especially this song and the emotion you bring to the story. We tend to forget the agony Jesus felt in the Garden as He prayed to His Father. He knew years before He would die that we might live but now here is the reality of that sacrifice. Dan you have done a wonderful work here at helping us to understand Christ's agony. Bless you and thank you. ❤❤❤❤

I dont think I'll see a better performance of Gethsemane. The vocal performance is exceptional, Ive come to expect that from Mr Vasc,..but this is an absolutely poignant Christ,.. a Son, speaking to his Father,.. rebelling, and angry, scared, and yet still trying to please his parent. The juxtaposition of duty and fear, doubt, and even a little self pity,.. were just a perfect blend. The acting expression was, again, precise, amazingly timed, and all done whilst delivering a belter of a vocal. This gentleman just keeps raising the bar...

As someone who grew up with and was deeply moved by the original Jesus Christ Superstar, who knew every song, sang along with and cried along with most of them, and played many on the piano, I am blown away by Dan's performance. I didn't think anyone could sing this song better than Ted Neely, but Dan took it to a new level. Vocally and emotionally, Dan outdid him in every way.

Must add to the previous response. I was so moved by your acting and the interpretation. I have watched it over and over and have been moved to tears. One of your best covers - alongside the US anthem. Must see more of you. But have to listen to this one again and then back to Elvis Trilogy that I also stood up to clap and made a post to you on that as well. I lived every emotion and tear drop. You posted it on my late fathers birthday which, in England was also fathers day. He would have been moved too. He was 88 when he died and you sang this on what would have been his 94th birthday.

I saw this original play in San Francisco years ago in the 70s ...since then no one has come close to the original with Ted Neely . Now, Dan Vasc has achieved beyond the original in voice with an awesome range and exceptionally realistic dramatic execution using the "original" instrumental background.
