Yeah man, this pedal had me hooked from the first! I really like the flange sounds I can get with it too! But the low pass vibrato is so epic before and after walls of sound! This has been my favorite demo of the pedal in a while too. One point I'd like to make is that although hearing the nuance of this pedal in headphones is cool, there's no replacing the feeling you get when you have this playing through several speakers and some decent wattage! I’ve found it so hard to get “musical” for a lack of a better word with these types of devices...or modulation specifically ....but this seems to have cracked this code. I think I hear what you are capturing. I have a recreation of oil can delay that I have such an issue dialing in. Seems like the useable play has been lengthened or expanded in the pot parameters so you can immediately dial in as a usable. Hopefully I’m getting the drift of this.
Great demo, is there any white noise when you get the LG and mix up to max ?, i’ve just bought and i’m getting very annoying white noise with each but when i stop it’s all quite, i wrote the company and they said it’s normal but your sound is all clear no noise at all
Great review. One of my favorite pedals and a staple on my board. One question for you: I get some wild high-pitch 'noise' / almost robot bird sounds when I turn the LPG up too high. Could be the P90s mixing with a Fender Deluxe + this pedal...as it tapers off when I turn my highs down or get that LPG at under 3pm. Any ideas? Did you ever notice anything similar?
I know that there is some inherent noise that comes from the BBD chip when you crank the modulation parameters the gate is there to tame those (it’s in the manual). Have you calibrated the gate internally? The manual has some tips on how to best do that and I went through to get it dialed before I started this video. I find that it really keeps that noise down.
@@KevinMcAfee Any luck with it? I have a high-pitched whine, even if the LPG is closed. just with MIX at 11 and VOLUME fully CW, the whine is gone. It is not the noise the BBD chip produces, this noise I can hear as well when the gate/filter opens...
Same problem. Was told by Fairfield it is super sensitive to what power supply you use. I switched to cioks dc7, but still have this issue. Any1 knows what power supply is used in this video?
Love your channel. Is the overdrive/grit all the Shallow Water and not coming at all from the Benson? I love the sound but would be going from my Wampler compressor to the Shallow Water (assuming that's good order) to my Meris Polymoon and then reverb. I don't have a Benson Preamp so I'm curious. Thanks!
What internal configuration do you recommend to make the effect more noticeable? I can't make it sound like the video, my shallow water is much smoother. Thanks!
i seem to get this overwhelming dark noise that it would be practically impossible to record with. however with your mixed it sounds like a healthy wet mix of the pedal. Is this normal?
Amazing work. I love the way it stacks with the benson preamp. Have you ever stacked the 1981 in front of the shallow water, in place of the benson? Which do/would you prefer?
I didn’t find that there was anything to solve. I set the filter to taste on the internal trim pot and then dialed to it whatever guitar I was using on the front. Never heard or dealt with any crazy noise.
@@markjohnstonofficial first of all, thanks for the quick reply. I found that even in this video th-cam.com/video/dBJ26MY-Blk/w-d-xo.html at 2:10 min when LPG is at maximum, or at least above half, it creates a noise like vibrating iron. In any case, I tried to write directly to Fairfield Circuitry to understand how to set it up. also because it is not clear how to move the boost and pad jumpers, in my case a black plastic element covers the 2 pins out of 3 on the left. Thanks.
Do you have any experience with their Barbershop pedal? I love it, but wonder if I could replace it with the Shallow Water to get the grit AND modulation. Great review of this pedal, btw. Thanks for showing some aspects other reviews haven’t.
Same, I'm still learning alot about this pedal but so far my fav is putting my oceans 11 on reverse delay/reverb through the shallow water, beautiful sounds.
Thank you for this review. Well done. I just purchased this pedal also, but apparently it makes a lot of whiny noise, that is probably due to the adaptor. I´ve tried 3 different cheap adaptors, and they all make it cry. What power supply do you use for the shallow water?
@@es5679 Thank you for answering. I already ordered a Boss's Ultra Clean Power adapter, which is a bit more expensive than the very basic ones and the noise is gone. Really enjoying the sound now.
@@es5679 :D The same. Your playing guitar through it? Nice demo. I’m surprised how quiet it is for you when the lpg is dimed. Mine introduces quite a bit of noise kind of in waves when I do that. Love this pedal though but would love it even more if it stayed as quiet as yours.
Have you set your gate with the internal trim pot? That’s a pretty crucial step, in my opinion, to getting the most out of the gate while still keeping it quiet.
@@markjohnstonofficial mine is also way noisier than the one in your demo. I tried both jumper positions and also tried to dial the LPG trim pot. when the LPG is fully open, the noise just won't go away... Could you maybe do a video about the trimpot setting?
Mine does too. I went through the internal lpg, disconnected every other pedal apart from the SW and my Iridium. The only way I can lower the noise is to dime the level on my Keeley Compressor Plus, and lower the output on the SW. My signal chain is Fairfield Barbershop v2 - Keeley Compressor Plus - Shallow Water - Greer Arbuckle Tremolo - Strymon Deco - Iridium. So now I’m wondering what your settings on the Iridium are? And also, this is the best Shallow Water demo I’ve seen.
Following! Mine’s on the way, and hope to dial it in as you have. Great demo, thank you very much. Hopefully FC is grateful for the clarity you provide here.
@@markjohnstonofficial Thanks for taking the time to answer. Because I focused on the music I didn't pay attention that there were different video shooting related to the different individual loops. I thought that you were overlaping loops in realtime and that you a had a setting that allowed you to play a loop, change track and record a second loop while the first is still playing, then change track and record a third loop etc etc...and end up with a multitrack session at the end of which you would just have to change the panning of each loop. Again thanks for your time and the poetry which emanates from your music and videos.
This pedal is like a.. .magic sauce thats very hard to put your finger on. I played it in a guitar store and was like "What is it even doing?" I cant tell. thats the magic.
Thank you for this very excellent demo. I'm a keyboardist and new to pedals--did you plug this into your amp's input, or an fx loop? I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong by plugging my SW in between my Rhodes and my vibrolux's input channel. It sucks out a ton of highs, and has a fairly extreme amount of added noise.
Actually, I just plugged into the pre-amp gain on the vibrolux, and the SW's signal is almost silent. I know I've routed everything right because bypassing the pedal results in a clean, clear tone. I opened up the SW and found no battery to replace. Any help for this pedal noon?
awesome demo, man! I’m curious where you have the LPG trimmer set. Shallow Water is my favorite mod pedal of all time, but I struggle with getting the balance of the gate right. Sounded dead on here.
It’s tough to say where mine was set because trim pots are hard to describe accurately. W no modulation, LPG at minimum, and mix at max; I set the gate so that my guitar is audible but can’t move the gate open in a discernible way. Then I turn up to LPG at noon and test my finger style attack dynamics to see if it feels good there. 3 passes of those two settings pretty much solved it for me.
Since it responds to the level of the signal, the response of the LPG can vary widely depending on the output of your pickups. If you have low output pickups you may consider adding a bit more volume from another pedal before it, or if you have high output pickups, play around with the volume on your guitar. Hope this helped!
If I felt like this was the kind of effect that I needed late in my signal chain I might be more sympathetic to that idea. But I really love this really early in my rig where there’s no way I would have already split to stereo.

Thanks.
@@giuliosignorotto4323 Has the noise issue been solved for you? Mine does produce that annoying hiss too.
Do you have any experience with their Barbershop pedal? I love it, but wonder if I could replace it with the Shallow Water to get the grit AND modulation. Great review of this pedal, btw. Thanks for showing some aspects other reviews haven’t.
Unfortunately not, Ive heard some clips of it but not enough to fairly compare the two.
woa! this IS SO COOL. also, first video I've seen of yours and excited to see you use Luna?
I love this pedal, I use it at the end of the chain. A reverse delay with a big reverb into it sounds amazing
Same, I'm still learning alot about this pedal but so far my fav is putting my oceans 11 on reverse delay/reverb through the shallow water, beautiful sounds.
I'm finding it hard to find this pedal, but does anyone know anything that is similar to this pedal because it sounds BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this review. Well done. I just purchased this pedal also, but apparently it makes a lot of whiny noise, that is probably due to the adaptor. I´ve tried 3 different cheap adaptors, and they all make it cry. What power supply do you use for the shallow water?
I got mine today. It works great with a Strymon Zuma, only a bit of noise when LPG is cranked. It sounds like in the video :)
@@es5679 Thank you for answering. I already ordered a Boss's Ultra Clean Power adapter, which is a bit more expensive than the very basic ones and the noise is gone. Really enjoying the sound now.
@@PaapMezilane I'm happy to hear that! I didn't know I had it in me, but this evening is just ambient jamming with the Shallow Water for me haha
@@es5679 :D The same. Your playing guitar through it? I have at the moment volca FM hooked up with the KFM ;) The boost and gentle breakups of sound and metallic resonances of this pedal are miraculous as are the chorusy space stretches... This box is all about finding sweet spots for each sound... Enjoy!
@@PaapMezilane Yes only guitar so far. Cool, I will probably try with synths later on as well!
Mark Johnston I haven’t. When I contacted Fairfield about it they said messing with that could mess up the pedal. Any tips for adjusting it?
How did you manage to pan the different loops? Specific live set-up or post-recording panning?
Everything is recorded individually in my DAW and then mixed from there.
Thanks
This pedal is like a.. .magic sauce thats very hard to put your finger on. I played it in a guitar store and was like "What is it even doing?" I cant tell. thats the magic.
There’s definitely an element of randomness
Lurching sea sick, perfect way to describe this, how do you think it would sound on bass, if the right stuff was played on it? New sub here now
Thank you for this very excellent demo.
@Will, I would call Fairfield Circuitry and ask for help.
I would pay to watch him play. I already paid for the pedal.
awesome demo, man!
Bruh i love this
Did you go inside and turn the boost off and pad on?
14:11 lovely
I almost bought one of those Harmony guitars. Do you love it?
Love it. I just did a giveaway of one on my Instagram. They’re excellent instruments.
greatest pedal of all time
When i have my LPG turned on fully there is a noise appearing whenever i hit a note. Is that normal ?
Mine does the same.
@@danielleinad6019 i asked the support it is indeed normal
@@cozyfromearth9864 Good to know, thank you!
Can you get the randomness to completely go away? I can’t stand that sound. Love all the rest.
Can’t get past that the pedals from this brand are mono only. Can’t spend that kind of money for mono. But does sound great.
If I felt like this was the kind of effect that I needed late in my signal chain I might be more sympathetic to that idea. But I really love this really early in my rig where there’s no way I would have already split to stereo.
@@markjohnstonofficial fair enough. you have a great channel, by the way. i appreciate your approach. you seem like a good human being as well.
