I've lived in Mississippi my whole life and I can say that Jackson should absolutely NOT be on this list. There are a lot of things to do in Jackson, but you don't want to live there and you don't want to be in certain areas alone night or day. There's at least one murder reported every day. Not exactly my idea of a good place to live.

@@TraciMoon this is the bible belt, but a lot of people aren't religious. There are a lot of more progressive cities. Hattiesburg MS is pretty progressive. Just avoid the real small towns. Poorest state? The US considers 30k a year to be poverty. But due to low cost of living 30k is middle class in Mississippi. 500k house in any other state is about 120k-150k In Mississippi. Most mortgages here are more affordable than roach and rat infested apartments in other states.

I saw a post the other day where a 1200 sq ft shack on 2200 sq ft property was for sale for $2.7MILLION somewhere in Colorado.. $150-$200k home in mississippi goes a long way.. like you said. $30k a year gets you A LOT MORE in mississippi than it would in California..

Delta man here, left for the Army 27 years ago and Greenwood is depressing now. It’s straight up poverty. My heart tugs me back to greenwood but every time I return I can’t wait to leave. It’s so sad to see such a beautiful town die.

Man Jackson got crapped on in the comments. That has to be coming from people from the suburbs because South Jackson is horrible but the rest is okay aside from a few blocks here and there that are rundown. A lot of the historical areas are very charming.

Jackson??? Seriously??? Whoever did this list is absolutely CRAZY!!!! The crime rate is insanely high, the poverty rate is almost as bad as the crime rate. The only good thing about Jackson is the higher education opportunities (UMMC, Belhaven, Jackson State, and the 1 that I always have trouble remembering). When my daughter was going to Belhaven, I was worried sick about something happening to her.

I live in Jackson years ago and I had my car stolen and it's no where safe in Jackson to live yet alone being the best place to live. Outside of Jackson to live be the best. Now I live in Raleigh North Carolina I love it here its remind me of Jackson but not as bad but I always call Mississippi my home.

I visit Laurel every few years to see my family. There are things I don't like about living there. Like you have to go so far to go to the malls. Casinos, any just like of cultural things to do. The cost of living is low, but so is the starting pay for jobs. In order to go to the hospital you have to go to either Meridian or Hattiesburg or Jackson for good healthcare.
In my city, everything is right at your hands and feet. If you have teenagers there's so much for them to do. Some of the starting wages for jobs is $14 an hour. And that's just for doing janitorial in the hospitals.
I've had family members move from down there as teenagers and are doing really well within their careers.
I love my home state. Just not enough to move back.
