It’s a college town, but has an eclectic vibe that grabs ahold of you in ways that can’t be ignored. We plan to retire there within the next five years.
I live in Oxford, and it's a great city for all ages. I'm a "so-called" senior, and it's perfect. But for families with young children, it's also ideal. Very safe too!
Love Littleton, NH! I used to work at Plymouth State University and we lived about 40 minutes away from Littleton. We used to head up there a lot. The walking bridge with Schillings Brewery is great. They do an awesome Halloween festival where they put a ton of Jac-o-lanterns on the bridge and down in the river
Been through Littleton several times. On the day of the eclipse I was there eating at the Littleton Diner, perhaps the best diner in NH. And Chutters candy shop is awesome with some of the best fudge anywhere. Really nice small town feel to it. Any day I can get up there is a good day. Briggs is right, he could do a whole video of "charming small towns" of just New Hampshire. New London, Henniker, Plymouth, Bristol...
Took that train outta Portland to Montana in wintertime. Got delayed so rolled into the mountain pass at sunrise. Man, it is the most beautiful train ride EVER. Too bad it usually happens in the dark. Thanks for the vid!

I took the train to Whitefish in the winter of 1991. Stayed at the Grouse Mountain Lodge and skied at Big Mountain. Was just there last summer and man does it look different.

I’ve been to Carson City many times because I lived in Reno for several years. I like Carson City. I just didn’t know it was considered “charming” 😊. I spent several days in Kennebunkport. Great place! I’d love to see Littleton, NH. I’m a fan of the northeast. I won’t enjoy anywhere hot and humid. Carson City is very liveable. The summers can be hot but they are short and dry which is just how I like my summers. Lol
Yeah, I actually love trains, believe it or not, because my grandfather inspired my love for their history. So I think I would love to take a trip to Carson City someday.
The train museum is incredible. We got to hang out with a couple of the volunteers there as they were working on some rolling stock. If I was going to live in Nevada, I’d move there.

bend Oregon is an amazing place! I've got family there and it is a great place. I also love trains and I have taken the train from Portland Oregon to Washington DC about 20 years ago and I would love to do it again. Of course I got a sleeper car with a friend and I had so much fun. It is a great way to travel.
I am AMAZED you would have Unalaska on this list. Yes… it is nice. In the summer when he sun shines 4 days in 6 months. I lived in Unalaska for 6 months as a project engineer on their sewage treatment plant. Speaking of sewage… imagine a 5 gallon bucket in your “honey closet” where your piss and shit into. When it gets full, you take it out to your 55 gallon “honey barrel” on your front deck. Not on the ground… you would thaw it out and it would all spill on your front tundra. NOT a yard… tundra. Once a month, public utilities will come around with a skidsteer and haul your pissy, shitty “honey waste” and dump it 4 miles downwind from Unalaska.
I love whitefish there are so many activities and attractions there. They have excellent medium to top end restaurants. Extremely close to glacier national Park. There is plenty of outside activities, including biking, hiking, four wheeling and fishing. And you have skiing in the winter. I on top of there is the whitefish railroad station which means you can jump Amtrak or just hang around and watch the railyard. Future I found in the short time I was there. They had a 24 Hour Bowling Alley with an actually really good restaurant, with an ice cream shop next-door.
My family is leaving for Bend tomorrow. They vacation there almost every other summer. And yes, it has gotten incredibly expensive to buy a home there!
Bend is very very right-wing though. Its as if it felt compelled to be the polar opposite of Portland. Most of these town everyone would be welcome.. not so sure that is true in Bend.
I just learned something from this video. There are two Illinois Rivers. One flows in the state of Illinois and ends in the Mississippi. The other is the one mentioned in the video in Arkansas, which I did not know existed. Good job Briggs.
I've been to Siloam, Arkansas, several times. The area is beautiful, especially during the Autumn. And, I could easily live in that area. The New Hampshire town mentioned would love to visit but definitely couldn't afford to live there. Beautiful though

I haven't been to Carson City for years, but back then, the cops were petty, and the casinos were dead. Reno wasn't that far away and was a much better time. In fact, even Gardnerville, just down the road to the south was a better time than CC in those days.

Some of the worst air quality in country during the summer. Water issues are imminent. I think Bend has seen it's best days and it's downhill from here.

When I worked as a special investigator at a credit card division in a bank, thousands of stolen credit cards ended up in Bend, Oregon. Not sure if airplanes dropped them in that area or how exactly they got there. We just arrested people using them illegally, and often that usage was not actually taking place in Bend. Tell me about it. I was in Great Falls for 3 years. Most people hated it in the winter. My friends and I took up snowboarding and really enjoyed the winters just because of that.
I lived in Cartersville for 14 years and should have never left. It’s only drawback is if you’re a golfer, it’s either join the so-so country club or give up the game after playing the only public course where the layout is a joke. The food scene is great and the museums you mentioned are world class. If you’re into the outdoors there’s plenty of places to enjoy like nearby Red Top Mountain and Lake Allatoona. It’s also a Civil War history buffs dream. Also a high school sports enthusiast’s dream with teams winning multiple titles in several sports.
Littleton, NH looks wonderful, especially with that mondo candy counter there! However, I've been living in Oxford, MS for three years now, and plan to stay. (Yes, it made #3 on this list.) Hopefully, not too many people (outside the South) find out about Oxford. But based on the population growth for both the city and the university, the secret is out!
I really liked Carson City, but I was just visiting and have never lived there. I have been to Whitefish and it was nice, the whole state is beautiful, but it gets to cold in the winter for me.
My ex wife and I were fairly well off when we got married. She worked as an executive secretary for the President of an airline so we flew basically for free. When we married we chose Kennebunkport Maine as our honeymoon destination and we were not disappointed. Returned every year for a decade, great town.
I'd like to suggest Bardstown and Georgetown in Kentucky to your list along with Madison Indiana to your list of charming American towns. They're much more charming than any of the towns on your list. I don't know the home values though.

Just went through Winslow, and stayed a couple of hours, weeks ago. It was HOT. Coming back from California. Fell in love with Cambria (CA)! Now THAT is a charming small town, up in the Mission district. We’re talking about Winslow - Right? It IS cute I f you don’t mind the desert, but I do. After 25 years in the Smoky Mountains, I need the green and the trees. You want a lawn? Mow. That’s it. What is it with desert towns and public restrooms?!? Nothing worse than picking a gas station that claims that they do NOT have public rest rooms?? So did a fair amount of reaching in Oxford. Love that town. Loved it! Didn’t know about the chefs, though. Ate mostly hospital cafeteria food. Gotta head back to the area in about 4 weeks. Anyone have some good recommendations ? Thanks Briggs. Am avoiding Northern Georgia as long as MTG is in the area. Safer that way!
You wasted the entire segment of Winslow AZ showing that one block of the painted wall and statue that was highlighted in an Eagle's song. There is so much more to this town than just that touristy spot. Such tunnel-vision.
We actually liked in Bend and as someone told us before we moved there, you will either love it or hate it. We hated it. Plan 20+ minutes to get anywhere. The infrastructure is not set up for all the people.
Now Bend is a great place but my opinion its more like a small city or a large town rather than a small town, now Klamath Falls is a small town and Bonanza is even smaller and I know cause live in the area.
I take issue with what you consider to be a 'small town'. According to US Census Bureau a small town is 5000 or less. There are towns listed that are quite a bit larger.
I'd be happy to rent my 3 bed/2bath place in Bend just one minute from the Old Mill district for a cool 3K per month. You can hear all the concerts from my garage man's den. Such a deal! Sun, smoke, snow, and those lovable Californians! Make it 4K! I'll be in Bandon waiting for the Cascadia Subduction Zone Big One to take me out.

So, maybe you should someday look at Lewes, DE, since it is less expensive in certain areas than Kennebunkport, ME.

bend Oregon is an amazing place! I've got family there and it is a great place. I also love trains and I have taken the train from Portland Oregon to Washington DC about 20 years ago and I would love to do it again. Of course I got a sleeper car with a friend and I had so much fun. It is a great way to travel.

We recently visited the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, GA and were surprised how big it was! Definitely recommend!

My ex wife and I were fairly well off when we got married. She worked as an executive secretary for the President of an airline so we flew basically for free. When we married we chose Kennebunkport Maine as our honeymoon destination and we were not disappointed. Returned every year for a decade, great town.
I love Bend Oregon. My best friends dad owns a bunch of car dealerships in Bend. We live in Boise and his company is based here.

I'd like to suggest Bardstown and Georgetown in Kentucky to your list along with Madison Indiana to your list of charming American towns. They're much more charming than any of the towns on your list. I don't know the home values though.

Just went through Winslow, and stayed a couple of hours, weeks ago. It was HOT. Coming back from California. Fell in love with Cambria (CA)! Now THAT is a charming small town, up in the Mission district. We’re talking about Winslow - Right? It IS cute I f you don’t mind the desert, but I do. After 25 years in the Smoky Mountains, I need the green and the trees. You want a lawn? Mow. That’s it. What is it with desert towns and public restrooms?!? Nothing worse than picking a gas station that claims that they do NOT have public rest rooms?? So did a fair amount of reaching in Oxford. Love that town. Loved it! Didn’t know about the chefs, though. Ate mostly hospital cafeteria food. Gotta head back to the area in about 4 weeks. Anyone have some good recommendations ?

You wasted the entire segment of Winslow AZ showing that one block of the painted wall and statue that was highlighted in an Eagle's song. There is so much more to this town than just that touristy spot. Such tunnel-vision.

We actually liked in Bend and as someone told us before we moved there, you will either love it or hate it. We hated it. Plan 20+ minutes to get anywhere. The infrastructure is not set up for all the people.
Now Bend is a great place but my opinion its more like a small city or a large town rather than a small town, now Klamath Falls is a small town and Bonanza is even smaller and I know cause live in the area.
Can you do a video for best towns during the Halloween season? Or best towns that celebrate Halloween?
I take issue with what you consider to be a 'small town'. According to US Census Bureau a small town is 5000 or less. There are towns listed that are quite a bit larger.
I'd be happy to rent my 3 bed/2bath place in Bend just one minute from the Old Mill district for a cool 3K per month. You can hear all the concerts from my garage man's den. Such a deal! Sun, smoke, snow, and those lovable Californians! Make it 4K! I'll be in Bandon waiting for the Cascadia Subduction Zone Big One to take me out.
Oxford, Ms. strikes me as a place to be.
Do not go to oxford it sucks trust me I lived there rude stuck people not mutch to do unless you enjoy ole miss activities I suggest to go somewhere else

@Briggs, did not know that the Illinois river flows through that town you mentioned twice in Arkansas, thought it ended up in the Mississippi River..... Ever heard of Lewes, DE? Maybe you should, because it is a great small town in Sussex County, Delaware. BTW, Kennebunkport, ME Is a very expensive place to live, but would agree that it is a great town, where my mother once lived across the bay from H W Bush. So, maybe you should someday look at Lewes, DE, since it is less expensive in certain areas than Kennebunkport, ME.
