    So Fighting Games! Pretty cool huh? They are doing downright decent at the moment, lots to talk about and lots to love. Well, except for 3D Fighting games that is... those aren't doing so great. What happened? The genre as a whole is hitting it out of the park lately but its only specifically for 2d fighters, 3d fighters aint getting the love. Tekken is the last game standing and is there any hope at all for any competition in the 3d fighter space again? ***EDIT*** lmao no, the new DBZ and bleach games are NOT 3d fighters. Arena fighters do not count in any way lol

      I'd argue we're still living in a world without a true arena fighter either. Just once, I want to see an arena fighter that is competitively minded, as opposed to a casual/party game.

      To revive soul Calibur all they need to do is a Nintendo switch port of SC2 with all guess characters bundle in and prettier graphics. The graphics don’t have to be ps5 quality, just subpar ps4 graphics and the moment they put Link on screen that’s it the game is sold. Maybe add the character creator.

      Many people don't realize Soul Calibur CARRIED fighting games in the early 2000s. DOA5LR has the deepest parry mechanics out of any fighting game. Some characters even have a command parry. I sincerely believe lots of people would love it if they gave it a chance. It's just sad to see most people ignore it due to the mainstream headlines of pervy dlc's and scammy prices when in reality the core of the high level gameplay is sublime.

    • @tbc1880
      @tbc1880 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      I think main issue now is playing with others online. Like no lobbies? Heck even getting 6 to work. I tried playing with a friend who i can play delay based games like OG granblue and maybe if you count "its a 3" tekken 7 just fine with, but DOA 6 was a slide show. So can't really even play DOA online with my friends. That said when i played some 5 locally it cooked hard. So games are solid but need more ground level fixes.

    • @lewiswood9286
      @lewiswood9286 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      I think DoA's biggest problem is it's art direction. In comparison with Tekken, the characters don't really distinguish themselves visually with much in the way of personality. The majority of the roster looks like 3d rendered dolls. So I think if DoA wants to leave a more lasting impact with a fresh audience, they'll need to rethink their approach to character design.

    • @Renoistic
      @Renoistic วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      But all those things are true... And while I enjoy the parry I think the later DoA games made it too hard and frustrating to know which parries actually worked against which attacks. It all just felt like a guessing game. And goodness those story modes were rough to watch. Still 5 was a fun party game, but they need to invigorate it properly if they bring it back. 6 was just a slightly worse 5. And almost every new character made it clear that Team Ninja were COMPLETELY out of ideas wrt character designs.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      @@lewiswood9286 The character designs are DOA's biggest draw. Hence, the spinoffs and endless DLC costumes. Guest characters from Virtua Fighter & Fatal Fury even fit well in DOA5. In terms of 3d fighters there's Hellish Quart. It's niche is about historical weapons and realism so definitive not for everyone but maybe worth a look.
    It's also developed by a singular random gigachad in a polish shed somewhere.

    It's currently a great time for the FGC, but still a long way from the level of the 90s golden age. Most of the hype for the genre is for DLC characters and collections of older games. Tekken 8 is apparently the only new major title released this year. Two decades ago: Tekken, Virtua Fighter 2, Children of the Atom, Samurai Shodown 2, King of Fighters '94, Killer Instinct, Primal Rage, Darkstalkers, Art of Fighting 2, etc... Not even counting the Super SF2 Turbo update.

      A lot of it comes down to literal technical difficulty and fine tuning. Technical being ensuring hitbox detection, animition rendering and uncontrolled character interactions feel smooth. The fine tuning coming from fighting games often being balanced by literal frames and the must to spend days and days just playing with frames.

    Remember guys, YOU keep the games alive. If you care about DOA, VF and SC (or others) go play them. Have your friends play, organize tournaments, stream them. Send them to the devs, let them know that you want more of it. Do not let them die.
    Capcom acknowledged the numbers that Monster Hunter World was still pulling years after Monster Hunter Rise was released. Now they're bringing a new game that feels more like World. What I mean to say is, play the latest game in the franchise you like that you consider the best. I know there's still a big response to DOA4, go play that, or 5. If you didn't like Soul Calibur 6, go play even 2 if that's what you like.
    I know it sounds like work but I'm encouraging you guys to go have fun with the games you like and not chase a trend just because it's new and there's a lot of people playing it. We can create more communities or get the other ones together. Remember, you have the power.

    thing is, to a greater extent than most 2d fighters, 3d fighting game series have historically been tied to individual "superstar" game devs-virtua fighter *is* yu suzuki, dead or alive is the specific eccentric passion project of itagaki-and often in the japanese dev scene when the One Dude responsible for a series moves on, the series basically dies, no matter how historically successful or significant it might be.
    of the major 3d fighting games, tekken is the only one with its original "parent" still kicking it at home and being weird. once harada retires (after tekken 9, he currently suggests), there will be no one left to confidently champion further development-and likely anyone strange and talented and strong-willed enough to carry things on would rather work on their own projects.
    i'm simplifying things a lot, obviously, and there's rarely just one factor with any of this stuff. but also consider, back on the 2d front, how the primary reason we haven't had another fatal fury since 1999 is that after the aruze debacle there wasn't anyone left at snk/playmore with the passion and motivation to make it happen. now there is, and that's why we're getting a new game.

    I remember Harada once responding to someone who was asking about the possibility of a Dead or Alive guest character in Tekken 8 and he said that because of the current state of the franchise, it's unlikely. I would argue that it's because of the current state of the franchise that there should be a show of appreciation for the actual fighting game series (I know Dead or Alive has been involved in a lot of collaborations, but they were all related to Venus Vacation and for gacha games like Azur Lane and Destiny Child). The only game I can think of that had a crossover with DoA was King of Fighters All Star, the only place where every major fighting game franchise (minus MK) came together and it wasn't even a fighting game... and it's shutting down this month. My need for a DoA fix has gotten so bad that I'm now holding other fighting game franchises responsible for keeping its legacy alive.
    And while I'm rambling, I bought Tekken 8 recently because I could get it at like $30 off, I have it ready to go on my PS5 with updates and such... haven't even booted up the actual game. I went right back to Street Fighter 6 when Terry launched. There isn't really a character in Tekken 8 I'm crazy about and the two I'm willing to play either have a risk/reward mechanic that doesn't fit my playstyle or I've heard is a very weak version of the character. And none of the DLC fighters are interesting to me, except for Heihachi for reasons that make me laugh my ass off or facepalm. I'd rather go back to Tekken 7 and play Kunimitsu (you can see I have a type).

    Another reason that there hasn't been another VF in years is that VF always served as a tech demo for Sega's latest arcade hardware, and as far as I know, Sega hasn't really been developing any new revolutionary hardware like they used to. VF always had this goal of pushing the boundaries of what a game could be or do, and the developers don't want to make a new game if they can't do something new.
    I think the most controversial thing a new VF game could do is to basically sell out and tack on some kind of meter system that al the other 3D fighters eventually did. VF's uniqueness is how grounded it is. It's the one popular fighting game that has stuck to being about martial arts and not superpowers. Its primary comeback mechanic has always been ringouts rather than a high damaging super move. I'm hoping that for VF6 they find a way to add a mechanic that still feels grounded and doesn't mess up the game. Elevated terrain like in VF3 or Tekken 4 was the right idea but ultimately unable to work out.

    Mark from the Electric Underground made a great point that games like VF5, by not being updated for years, are complete in some sense, and aren't subject to the usual turmoil you get when games are updated and patched. That doesn't mean more people play them but for the people who still do, they're better games for it.
    VF5 US is a great game and if that's all there was for a while longer, I'd not be too upset. But the idea of a VF6 both excites and concerns me... it must avoid "modernisation" like Tekken 8 has suffered. No meters, no stupid monetisation, it just needs to be that classic VF gameplay with some new characters and not too much changed. With a game that perfect, it's easier to mess things up than it is add anything new of worth.

If such a big and influential company went from middling results trying to make things work in the 3D space Only to just explode by going back to 2D, that sorta observation might make devs/publishers hesitant.
    I’m probably talking out my ass but who knows.
