That is the largest palette I've ever seen used with a small sketchbook. Good for you. I DIYed a bag like this from a canvas messenger bag with a similar front flap, and then I used the Micro Portable Painter's Palette, which is large enough to hold water and 6 half pans easily. I didn't add the elastic to hold the palette because it's easier to clip it onto the rigid flap (although I glued magnets inside the front pocket of the flap on my bag and additional magnets on the bottom of the palette, but you can also use a small metal palette to use with the bag). I used coroplast for the stiff partition inside the flap and made the "brace piece" from the same material. Basically, any similar style bag with a front flap can be made into this style of a bag and you can customize it to your own needs. I find this is a great tool to use for short walks in the woods where I can convert the bag to a sketch easel in seconds and make a quick sketch. BTW, my bag cost me around $25.00 (saving me $115.00 for other art supplies). 😊
Hey, Julie! I watch your show on PBS! I found this review looking to share more info about the bag with a sketcher friend as Darsie doesn't seem to have a video anymore. I do know Darsie and have sketched with him for years in Urban Sketchers Tacoma and Seattle! He's a great guy who is very generous with his time and knowledge. I haven't bought one of the bags as it seems too small. I probably carry tooo much stuff when I go out sketching! But I've always thought it's a great design. Many people in our groups here do have one and like it a LOT.
I have had mine a while and now want to start using the bag. Thanks for great review. It was nice you know exactly how it goes without fumbling around. I have your pallet and now got much smaller one and that will be nice too
I’m so glad this showed up in my feed! Awesome review and demonstration. Over the years, I have contemplated about getting this bag, but just wasn’t sure if I’d actually use it. I was super torn between this and the Artraveller Easel Bag for a long time. I ended up go8ng for the Artraveller because even being shipped from the UK it was less expensive than the Darsie Beck. I really enjoy using the Artraveller and I even added a piece of plexiglass that I can slide out from behind the drawing board to attach my palette too using blue tack, and some heavy duty velcro to the front flap so that it would hold my Tran Pencil Portfolio to hold colored pencils and watercolor pencils. The only thing is, is that the Artraveller doesn’t hold my Tombow Dual Brush Pens very well (cause they’re too long). So, if I want to switch to Tombows I have to take a whole different set up. The thing that intrigues me about the Darsie Beck is the pouch that attaches to the strap. I think that would come in very handy. It’s where I’d put the most used tools for a specific sketch so it would be easier to keep track of specific colors of markers and pencils, pens, water brush, etc. like a third hand. You’ve definitely given me something to think about. Thank you for the video! 🤗💛
I’m really liking these recent reviews (e.g. the book club books, art subscription box, now this bag). Even if some of the products aren’t the right for me, I feel like I’m being introduced to neat finds, so thank you!
This looks interesting. I've tried all kinds of ways of trying to take a sketchbook with me to be easy and accessible, but haven't really found anything that successful. I'd be interested to know how this is working for you.
Liking the look and function of that bag but I think the cost of sending it to the UK would put me off. Good bags do cost a lot though, so I'm not surprised it's expensive. I followed the link to the inventor's website and it's very inspirational about urban sketching, so thanks for that also.
Yep wondering the same thing. I made my on portable palette but for some reason this popped up and I like it but then also weary of it at the same time. It is a few inches wider and 1 inch taller than my current bag. I am wondering what she currently uses now it’s really hard to find any info on this bag and there doesn’t seem to be much out there like this bag.

Thanks for sharing this with us. It looks super convenient. I wouldn’t have heard of this otherwise.

Love the premise of this bag. Thanks for the recommendation and demo. I trust your reviews!
I'm so glad to hear that! Thanks!

You're so welcome!
Do you still use this and like it? I have been looking hard at different ways to have an urban sketch kit.
