    That was neet how you straighten the crank/flywheel out Tatro. What is the cause of these going out of round? Is it the torque? If so, how do you eliminate the issue so it wont come back? I have one of the new M8 engines and I would like to put a big bore kit in it, but am gunshie still. Tman performance has a nice 120 kit, but in doing so, should I make any improvements to the lower end while it's apart? Thanks for your time in making these videos.

      not sure. would probably start at a 50% deal and go from there. i would read up on what harley was trying to do and what numbers they were using and why. i would at least measure what harley used and equalize the two flywheels. this all deppends on what the applcation is for too. stock type riding or lets go have some fun.

Much love for Harley's but they are in no way comparable except HD has vague resemblance to parts of ancient radial engines which were built to a far higher standard. A&P here. as proved in the video, once you weld the crank you lose the press fit that holds the crank together. the only thing holding the crank together is the weld bead. better make sure that is a good weld or it is going to move. the other problem is that when you weld the crank it moves from the heating and cooling so you loose your straight crank. it is now out of true and will need straightening. this straightening can break the weld which will loose all you strength that you were trying to get.

    Wouldnt it be better if Harley had a solid forged crank, and side by side connecting rods? Much stronger, no shiming? keep it 45 degrees for the sound, you probably wouldnt get that low rpm idle because you dont have the weight of the massive flywheels. I enjoy your videos!!!! peace out

      Thank you, I have a 93 FXR sport with the evolution engine that I love! I think it's got the weaker bearing on the cam? Do those flywheels stay true? I believe I just have the screaming eagle exhaust and jettting. At a stoplight it can be rough with the fumes. I'll check the plugs, I might need to jet it down, but I know running rich will keep it cooler. I have never had a problem with a plug fouling. I purchased it 3.5 years ago and love the frame!!!! Is the fumes normal if my plugs look good, by the way I changed the plugs when I got it, and they looked fine, and changed all the fluids. Love your FXR build, the different oil pumps etc.... Thank you!!!!!!!

      all 1989-95 evo bt case are junk, very weak castings that like to break. if your case were not warranted out you will have problems if you run the motor hard. the later 97-99 cases are very good castings. all harley bt flywheels from late 1989 and later are junk. they are very weak and will not stay straight if you get after it. harley camshaft bearing are caged and should be replaced with uncaged full roller type bearings. the cams themselves are not that good on the materials they are made from and the grinds suck too. any aftermarket cam is better then stock on both counts. your carb is way out of adjustment, running rich is very bad for the motor. bolt on a hsr42 mikuin and your problems will go away and the power will go way up. like all harley motors they need lots of work to make them into good motors that are fun to ride and last. all of these problems were taken care of in the fxr 88 ci videos. that motor was a pain in the butt to build but it turned out to be a very good motor. the customer was very happy with the motor. he had to go hop-up his twincam dyna some more because the evo was kicking its butt.

      not true, harley replaced them with the later castings and put your vin number on them. i had one in the shop this week. you can tell because the later castings have the boss on the left front of the case for the later fuel injection crank sensor. these cases were so weak even slow stock riders had broken cases. half the bikes that came in with leaking or blown head or base gaskets had broken cases. the hole corner of the cases would just break off the case decks. the cases in the video had a long crack right down the side of the rear lifter block that no one knew was there until i showed it to them.

      marcia irmer if you have a better way of doing it, go for it. Harley sells you a junk crank and says it is good. they do not fix anything, I do.Twincam cranks are junk. you can not beat on the flywheels hardly at all without killing the shafts. older Harley cranks are made to fix so they make them out of good steel that you can beat the hell out of and they don't care. any Harley crank made after 1990 is a big pile of crap. cheap throw away junk.when you beat your crank apart on the side of your work bench what do you think you are doing to the tapers? better just to go to harley and buy a new one, you will feel better. don't worry about the vibration, they are made out of true on purpose.tatro

    This video demonstrates the Fatally Flawed stock Twin Cam engine flywheel assemblies, found on all Twin Cam engines produced from 1999 to the present.They are merely pressed together, at the factory, with a 400 ton press, and unlike all previous, Single Cam Harley, engines that came before it, it has no crank pin, bolt and nut, torqued to hold both halves of the flywheel in true.But, unless this mechanic, plugged and welded, both halves together, after dynamically truing it on the truing stand, all his work is for naught, because the flywheel assembly will merely come out of true, again, sooner, rather, than later, when re-installed into the crankcases. It doesn't take many miles, at all for the sprocket shaft and pinion shafts to start to wobble, past the max allowable run out of 0.001". At 0.003", damage to the bushings and bearings, in the oil pump and cam shafts, and pinion shaft bearings, will begin and eventual CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE will occur.The cycle of truing this flywheel, will begin anew. So, this mechanic, will always have plenty of work to do.This is only one of the many inherent, design flaws of all Twin Cam engines. They also use two silent chain, drives to run the oil pump and the two camshafts, and they are thumb-sized, PLASTIC tensioners, which rub against a METAL chain, and are designed by Harley to be periodically inspected and to be periodically replaced for wear.Failure to replace them at 3/32" of wear, will result in the breakage of the PLASTIC tensioners and immediate, CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE will occur.And it is a costly procedure to replace these tensioners, and require specialized tools to remove and replace them. The stock oil pump is inadequate and only produces 3-8 psi of oil pressure at idle, and so these engines, run extremely hot and heat is an engines worst enemy. At 2,500 rpm, the oil pump only produces around 40 psi, not enough pressure to keep the engine cool.Another problem are the stock junk INA Cam shaft bearings, which wear out prematurely, and should be replaced with Timken Tapered Roller bearings, when servicing the cam chain tensioners. CAVEAT EMPTOR LET THE BUYER BEWARE.Buy a XL1200 Sportster, instead of a big Twin Cam bike, they are reliable and use the much better EVOLUTION engine design. That is now, the only real, reliable, Harley to own, in my opinion, great bike.

      @TatroMachine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +tomcata1467
      your about 50% right on all of that. as for that sportster thing, they have the same crappy pressed flywheels as the twincam. Harley started with crappy cranks with the evo sportster and continued with the late 1989 evo big twin cranks then made things worse with all the pressed cranks in 1999 for all models. until Harley goes to a 1-piece crank they will always have bad bottom ends. they will have to fix the oiling problems before that one will work too.

      Good assessment and how true. Harley doesn't sell performance, only selling an image, a brand, pure marketing, is all they have, cause they sure don't have worthy bike in the lot. People fall for the image, They are buying "the sizzle" not the "steak", no "steak
      there. And about 15% of the parts, are made in other countries, anyway. It's not 100% American made, either. Harley is another multi-national company, and has plants in India to produce the 500cc and 750cc bikes.
      The Project Mount Rushmore, liquid cooled, Limited Edition models have coolant leaks already and Harley, can't or won't fix the problem. Liquid cooled Harleys, anathema to the purists.
