Bedroll and Haversack Camping: #4 Sleeping On Sandbars

  • Welcome to the miniseries "Bedroll and Haversack Camping." Part 4 is titled, "Sleeping on Sandbars." You will learn about 1) alternative ways to roll your blanket, 2) what I carry in my haversack for a two-night trip, 3) tramping along a riverbed 2) making shelter on sand bars, 3) tips for quenching thirst, 4) an energy drink popular in the 1800s, and 5 ) natural mosquito repellents.
    "The streambed of all navigable rivers in Texas is state-owned; therefore, camping, fishing and picnicking are legal there, including on sandbars. When camping or picnicking along the river, it is important to stay alert for possible rapid increases in river levels and speed due to rainstorms or water being released from the upstream dam. Be sure to respect the adjoining private property along the river by not trespassing and by cleaning up and packing away any trash that you create." -- Brazos River Authority, Texas. See: waterschool.brazos.org/post/Ca...
    American Beautyberry leaves (Callicarpa americana) repel mosquitoes, ticks and ants as effectively as DEET. They were used by Native Americans and early settlers. The USDA is currently studying the active ingredients for safety and mass-market potential. See: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/... Wax Myrtle (Myrica cerifera) is another plant that also repels biting insects.
    Cornmeal Johnny Cake Recipe
    * 1 cup cornmeal
    * 1/2 cup wheat flour
    * 4 tbsps brown sugar
    * 4 tbsp crushed parched corn
    * 1 tsp salt
    * 1 tsp baking powder
    * 2 tbsp bacon grease (optional)
    Add water until ingredients become a thick paste. Cook batter on non-greased pan over campfire coals.
    This miniseries demonstrates hiking, camping and wilderness survival techniques used during the 1800s. Many of these techniques have been largely forgotten, but are as effective today as when they were first discovered. This is not a re-enactment; Although I use modern clothing, tools and technologies in the videos, I attempt to use older technologies and improvise solutions to survival problems in a way similar to what our ancestors did before the American West was "settled." The miniseries is based on historical accounts from American pioneers (www.pioneerhandbooks.com), Civil War Veterans (such as: John M. Gould, 1877, How To Camp Out, Advice From A Civil War Veteran) and naturalists, such as John Muir and Henry David Thoreau.

    Ken, you've got to keep making these historical and thoroughly enjoyable videos of early camping know how's. I love 'em. And don't forget Bob. You guys are a good team.

    I am a history buff and the other day at Barnes & Nobel a book showed three southern men on the cover, each having a well secured bedroll slung on there backs. I observed that it appeared to be a prized piece of equipment. Thank you for keeping the history of our country alive you are a Patriot and a service to your country. I was privileged to learn from my Great grand mother in the 1970 s she was 97 at the time. she told me of the " Mountain Folk" of West Va. in the late 1800 s

    This so much for watching. It was fun to make this video.... and VERY RELAXING. The moment I reached the river....it felt that I had gone back in time 100 years. Nature was at it's best...and the weather was perfect. Enjoy the weekend, my friend.

    Hi Craig,
    The Johny Cake recipe is listed in the narrative below the video. Press the, "show more" button and you will see it. I only brought one canteen of water. I boiled the river water for the rest (this wate,r when treated, becomes drinking water for city of Houston). In the 19th century, folks drank it straight from the river (the water was cleaner then).... and people may have developed more resistance to water-borne ilness.
    Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Ken

    Just ran across your videos and found them to be very enlightening and enjoyable. Your technique of demostrating a way of life in the 1800's is so much better than the videos of someone standing behind a table and explaining what something is and how to use it. I was a period correct rendezvouser for a couple of years and wish I had watched your videos prior to that. Thanks for sharing your excellent videos.

    Thanks for watching Roha. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Bedrolls, I understand were highly prised and carried in many different ways, I understand. People are creative. It is fun to read often forgotten experience and learnigs from the past & many are valid today. Wow, you're forturnate to learn directly about mountain folk. Stay tuned... I'm filming the 5th episode next week. It will include hammock camping / protection against snakes/scorpions in late 1800s, per literature.

    Thanks for watching and commenting, Lane. Contrary to popular opinion, not everyone carried firearms in the 1800s. For example, John Muir (founder of the Sierra Club) hiked 1000s miles from the north to Florida, immediatly after the Civil War without any firearms!

    Hi Sandy,
    Yes, the petrified wood that I sent came from the same river. It's already hot here and the weather forecast is HOT and HUMID...so the nights will be hot. I tried to live in the bush similar to most people did in the 1800s. Meat was a luxury. I read that Native Americans lived on just a handfull of parched corn and water every day when in the bush. I brought enough parched corn for a week, according to that standard! It is very filling.
    Have a good week, my friend.

    HI James,
    Yes, there are alligators in this part of Texas. They are relatively rare in rivers and prefer slower moving waters, with more tasty things to eat. Gators are non-aggressive and rarely attack people, unless they are protecting a nest. They usually swim / crawl away as fast as possible when they see people .... Nearly always. Crocks are much more aggressive --- and I wouldn't be in the water if crocks were nearby. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend. ....Ken

Also, last year I did one video where I slept inside a large hollow tree that was used by Native Americans and later by 1860s pioneers... It was really "different" trying to sleep inside the tree .... If you haven't seen the video, you may want to check it out. Thanks for watching. ...ken

    Thanks for watching and commenting. In this part of Texas its hard to find wool items (guess becasue it is HOT most of the time)... but Army Surpless stores and the Internet helpld. I'm guess that a honeycomb would be carried in a ting with lid. Glass and clay jars would be used if carried on wagons with care..... However, John Gould, 1877 author of the book I frequently quote, recommend against bring glass items on a camping trip.... He says that they will break....

These biting insects are AWEFUL.... and make sleeping on the ground much more uncomfortable .... My next upload in this series will be about sleeping in hammocks .... as done in the 1800s. Hammocks are less prone to insects, snakes and other problems....

    I have had several surprises sleeping on sand bars. The Army Corps of Engineers makes scheduled releases from their dams. This can give a couple of feet of water rise in a few hours, even 75 miles downstream. Call the Corps office if you will be downstream of one of their dams. The cold air of a cold front can roll down a river valley with incredible force. The first time one hit my tent, the force was so great I thought a cow had walked into the side of the tent. This was followed by a temperature drop of about 20 degrees in a few minutes. I have seen lots of snakes and gators, but none bothered me. Guard any dogs with EXTREME care around gators.

    This is a great video Brother! I'm all about the 18th century kit and camping, some good tips and info you shared, may have to add a few new bits to my kit. Keep it up!

    That's a good variation on the drink. Sounds good to me. The drink I made followed a direct quote from John Gould, 1877. John was a Civil War vetran and wrote a book on camping tips based on his life experiences.

    Thanks, Ken. My son and I have been using a 12' x 10' tarp from Walmart. Lengthwise, the grommets match on both sides; on the short sides, they do not. Still, we've made perfectly serviceable tarp tents. Next week, we'll each will make the one in your (excellent) video.
