My mother in law used to talk about her favorite horse. Her dad would keep him in the 2acre barnlot, and he loved people, especially kids. When the kids were playing here, he would come to the board fence that went around the back yard. The kids would start climbing the fence and climb on him. When the last kid got on, he would start walking carefully around the barnlot. Then he would come right back to the fence where the kids got on, and let them off. That horse was brought up in conversations we had with mother in laws friends, even at the dinner at the church after her funeral. Amazing the impact one big old horse had on so many. We had a picture of him with 7 kids on his back, with room for maybe 3 more. No bridle, no halter, no saddle. Grandpa retired him and kept him around cause he had been such a great workhorse.

I find riding drafts trained for pulling is like riding a rocket sometimes. They're used to giving some oomph to that first click click and they tend to take off because they not pulling anything. 😊

This is basically what happened with my 19 hh Clydesdale mare Astrid, who is an excellent hitch horse but had never been ridden until I got her earlier this year. I plonked a saddle on her back and hopped right on and away we went. Her mouth is a bit hard and she has some trouble turning left, since she was a wheel horse on the right side of a 6-horse show hitch for 14 years, but she's such a willing and gentle soul who just wants to please, so she's learning all about the fun of casual trail rides alongside her herd buddies.

A Belgian name King .. us 5 kids would ride him ...no harnesses or bridle. King would come to the corner of the fences so we could climb on .. we'd use his ears to guide him ( just a little tug is all it took) we could never get him to trot ( probably because he knew we'd have slid off all being kids 😂

I loved watching Abbey ride Bill. Years ago, I would occasionally ride my grandfather's drafts bareback (no harness). Comfortable, cushy, broad backs and wonderful bouncy jog that I could have ridden for hours. Although they had pretty hard mouths (compared to my riding horses) and sometimes it became a challenge to slow them down from a canter if they got too excited. I really think my grandfather's drafts enjoyed the leisurely rides as much as I did. Your video brought back really good memories...thanks! Looking forward to the next.

When I was a kid we had a buggy horse I would use to take me to the back of the property where we had a creek to swim in, she did good on the way there but as soon as she turned around to head back to the barn yard, there was no way of stopping her or even slow her down. She was the same way when she was on the buggy, take her sweet time getting to where we were going, but boy on the way home she would haul butt. She was the best buggy horse we had.

If someone wanted a ride, I'd ask "Can you ride?" Answer is always yes. How many times have you ridden? if they could answer, they didn't really qualify, but they sometimes got their ride, I did have a few I would not let the mugs on. And we had one who would not tolerate drunks, summarily dumping them, while she could be totally trusted to make sure she stayed under a toddler.

Bill did great for the first time with a rider!
I’m amazed how calm he stayed even at the beginning when he started to trot. Even when a horse is good and used to someone on their back at a walk, the first trot is always a bit spooky for them. The movement humans have to do for either sitting or posting tends to freak them out.
I would transition out of riding with a harness as SOON as possible. I know of people who have fallen off and gotten stuck in the traces. Their draft horse drug them through sharp gravel all the way home.
If you want to peruse riding with him, I’d recommend getting a synthetic English treeless saddle off Amazon or eBay for around 200. Fitting a draft can be expensive and difficult and you don’t want your horse sour in harness because of an ouchy back due to riding. Treeless are more prone to slippage (usually to the side! Round horses!) but are usually great for harder to fit horses and casual riding. Light, easy to put on, get a relatively nice pad and like a 40 inch girth for a dressage type billet or probably a 58 for jumping type billet. Great fun!
You can also get them in western varieties, but those are more expencive because of the bulk.

The reason I don’t like getting on horses in stalls or barns is that if they spook, there’s a lot more we can get hurt on if they throw us. It’s safer to hit the ground then a wall, where the horse doesn’t have much room to get out of the way so we are more likely to get stepped on.
    Bill is so good! :)

And the only way you could get on or off was to get on at the horse stall, or a stone wall, and it was a long ways down to the ground, and your legs were straight out! I use a lil super light weight treeless endurance saddle on my suffolk punch that only cost $150 from stateline tack. Helps that it’s light for the kid farmers I let ride him - they can throw it all the way up. Treeless fits the draft back , my guys a chunk. It’s silly cheap but that’s all I needed.

Good job Bill and Abby. Congrats on finishing the barn wall. I am impressed with the fit on your boards. I built a shop this summer and bought rough sawn 1x 12s and had gaps up to 1” because the boards were sometimes pretty warped. I used 1x 4” battens to cover.

I ride a draft cross and love the gait. It’s like riding a sofa. Sitting to the trot is a cinch.

Abby, you are brave, smart and strong -- and you have a lovely singing voice! That Bill is a good boy -- so glad it went well. And the barn wall looks beautiful. How nice that you got it finished before winter, Jim and Brenda. Yours is the only TH-cam channel that I automatically give a thumbs up to before it's finished, 'cause I know I will truly like them all!

Abby, you're my hero. it just blows me away how you have no fear. I'd be scared that I wouldn't have control. Brain strap, LoL, I want more brain straps. when you work the horses, they just plod along and yet apparently they want to run when someone is on their back... thxs for sharing

Working horses would be ridden to work as the equipment would be left in the field overnight. Three, maybe four guys would sit sideways on the horse. This was told to me by my Mother, who also had photographs. In my personal experience with Shires most would be fine with my riding them out to their turn-out field.

I love watching draft horses ride. I do wonder if the bit being used is too hard for him given his reaction every time he is whoed? (12:26 is a fairly big reaction). I could be just making assumptions, though and will kindly take any corrections coming my way lol

I loved watching you Abbey it looked like so much fun. There are many people who never get an experience with horses or ridding them. This let me dream about how fun it really is. Thanks I’m addicted to watching these amazing animals and your relationships with them.

That went well. Hey folks! See that lovely bareback seat? That is, in fact about how long you need to have your stirrups, only shorten for jumping and racing. Greetings from Australia.

You basically just turned the snaffle bit into a gag bit. Turn him around and make him go the other way. When my team would start that speeding up toward home, whether in harness or under saddle, I'd make them pass the driveway and keep going for several miles. Having the harness on also means that he understands that work behavior is expected, and not playing the pasture with the other horses behavior.

That was fun to watch, Abby!! I never got to ride a draft horse before but would have loved it if I'd had access to one. I'll be looking forward to see both of you girls riding Bill and Lady!!!!! They are beautiful horses. When I was a tiny little girl, my Mamaw had a big ole white horse named Bob. My uncle that lived nearby had another identical white horse named Frank. Often my uncle would hitch Bob and Frank to a wagon and let us ride in the wagon! They were both big horses but I don't know if they were true draft horses. My uncle used them to plow gardens in the area. That was a long time ago...about 64 yrs ago to be exact when I was 4 yrs old! Love this channel!! Oh, great job on the barn. It looks great!👍
