Congratulations halo! For someone who has a tight budget but also likes to collect slabs I actually buy PSA 9s instead of 10s the price difference between those 2 grades can be a huge difference and I have 9s that actually baffles me how they got a grade 9 because they look so flawless to me.😂

I buy 9s as well and I assume they sell for about market value. I've thought about starting to grade cards, but I think it would be tough to eat the grading fee every time a card isn't a 10.

There should NOT be this ratio of 10s out there… I can guarantee you that at the very least 50% of those 10s are 9s to strong 9s at best. Definitely some strong 8s in there as well I’m sure too…
The human element should probably be taken out of this. There’s definitely ways to get it dialed in perfectly. Note that I am fully aware that there are “AI” grading companies and I’m sure they’re great.
However, I’m primarily saying that a “committee of committees” needs to be convened to decide exactly what parameters to adhere to along with the procedures that need to be implemented to ensure that happens.
This way people can just choose their preferred grading company solely based on how cool/stylish they make their cases (obviously them most popular will float to the top). Throw some RGB in there or encrusted diamonds or something while you’re at it, haha.
I’ll reiterate with a small correction: The human element should ALMOST be entirely removed from the grading processes. Maybe have some master graders that go behind and check certain things that might interfere with the resulting grades (such as lint on the camera lens for example) and definitely do that for high end items naturally. Humans should just be the QA/Maintenance for the machines to do this.
    IMO of course, lol.

Are we sure PSA has increased rigor??? I think most likely SV PSA 10 conversion difficulty is related to print quality. I would say this is almost certainly intentional on part of Pokémon company as they control the printers now.

It’s not even $15 per card to grade. If we’re talking about PSA it ends up being 17-18 per card after you factor in the insured shipping that they charge for your submission. That’s not even considering the $99 membership fee to access the bulk grading prices 😢

    • @kennymorelandiii9406
      @kennymorelandiii9406 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yup! It's insanely expensive to grade cards especially with psa and that's usually who you want to grade them.
But it's gotten so expensive that you have to be extremely careful with what you grade if you're doing it to potentially sell for a profit.
Basically anything remotely modern like Sun & Moon Era and to present if it's not going to get atleast a 9 it's not worth the cost to grade most of the time.
Sure there are exceptions but for the most part anything remotely modern if it's a PSA 7-8 you can usually find a near mint raw copy for the same price roughly. So anything modern needs to get a 9 but really a 10 unless it's a rare card which let's be honest how many modern Era cards are actually considered rare?
Vintage depending on the set it can be a no brainer to grade as long as it's in NM or very LP or you once again got to be extremely careful as you might lose money or best case break even.
If you're paying $20 a card Basically to grade it and that's for values under I think $200 you seriously don't have any wiggle room especially if you're selling the graded card on like Ebay or something where you're going to lose 10-15% via fees and shipping costs.
Personally I'm glad that even though I'm a huge fan of collecting Pokemon and hell I even collect Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic the gathering and One Piece as well that I don't care for graded cards at all nor care to get my personal collection graded.
Personally I honestly think that all that is a scam. If you're wanting to just protect your card just get those magnetic card holder cases. Wayyyyyy too much inconsistencies , errors, damaging, sketchy scammy controveries, stupid psa changing the prices depending on card value, cards getting lost or stolen etc etc etc the list goes on and on on why I avoid supporting any grading company

Would be interesting to also see the PSA 9 sale pricing on these cards. That would help analyze your "downside risk" of this strategy, assuming you could pick a raw card that would at least grade a 9. I would guess that for most of these cards you would lose a decent chunk (since the raw and PSA 9 sale cost is similar and you would be paying fees to grade/sell), but others like the OBF Charizard ex SAR PSA 9 sells for around $65-70, so you would be closer to breaking even (after fees) with a PSA 9 on a card like that, but still losing some money.

Another good stat I look at when considering whether or not to get a card graded is the psa9 price. If the psa9 price is close to the raw price plus the fees, I will send it in. Sometimes the psa9 price is almost the same as the saw price. If that’s the case, I don’t bother. My two cents!

i rly gotta say i hate everything about flipping and short term money. it misleads people to believe that something has genuine demand and snowballs this speculation to a completely different level. Now we have this immense speculative bubble that comes with alot of volatility and unneccessary swings. I miss the old stable sideways trend days. Even placing myself in the middlemen spot just feels disgusting and dirty imo. I support real collectors where i can, but sometimes its tough to distinguish if someone has real interest and joy in the item or they just want to flip for short term profits.
Anyway i dont care or judge, but when i have the choice i always prefer to interact and deal with people who intend to collect and hold long term.

  • @mhammer9223

It all comes down to the ROI, the time you have that capital tied up, and how liquid the card is once graded vs raw. As you put it, it is generally easier for a business to just churn through singles with the built-in margin of buys/trade-ins as a business at 50-60% than gambling on a premium on 10's because you can cycle that money through again and again before the graded cards would even come back. The rare exception is if you can get a vintage or mid-era collection with pristine cards in it because then the margins on higher grades become significant.

Great video and examples. I would guess modern cards that are being submitted have been filtered, where typically the worst examples (centering, factory defects, wear etc.) don’t get sent in (and could make up a seizable portion of the ones available for sale on marketplaces). Just a thought example, but I’d expect gem rates to be lower if EVERY copy of a particular card were graded.

    1. Protect my cards

    3. As cards get older and more sought after its easier to assign a value vs just saying near mint when listings on EBay are tore up and say the same thing lol.

There is so much more to this...
Mainly, 90% of sellers understand that they can grade these cards and earn a premium off the same card. So more than likely, anyone who selling a NM card off TCGplayer the centering is going to be ass and your not gonna get a 10. Or small scratches, small whitening etc....
In modern graded cards, every card sent in, that person who graded the card...99.99% of the time, thought it was going to psa 10. The 9s are people who were disappointed and thought they had a 10...Basically saying, psa 10's aren't handed out as easily as it seems.
Example scenario : Let's say stand to make 40$ per card in a PSA 10...($40 raw price, $20 grading fee and psa 10s sell for $100) a card, for bulk grading prices ( the best deal you can get ) you need a minimum of 20 cards...So your just starting out and you only do the 20.
Risking $1200 to earn $800. Sounds awesome right? Well not really, depending on your state you owe eBay fees which in my state comes out to about 15% if I make the buyer pay shipping costs. So your down to $500. Assuming you get all 10s , which you won't, I imagine you might get on a best case scenario 80% 10s. So, now your 16 psa 10s net you 1360, and your psa 9s probably sell at or below raw price. which is 40$ which gives you another 136.
That gives you a total profit of $296. That isn't bad honestly, however your still required to find 20 copies of a "psa 10" worthy raw card for $40 which is very difficult to do and hopefully get lucky at PSA to get all 10s. It's not impossible but most of the time when you do the math it's easier just to try and flip raw cards lol.
Another couple factors to keep in mind...How liquid is the PSA 10 / PSA 9 card I am grading? If I hit 20 psa 10s am I going to be able to move them in 1 week or 3 months?

I have a few lucky pulls over the last couple of years that I plan to get graded eventually. I pulled a shiny charizard from champion’s path, an Espeon Vmax from fusion strike, two 151 charizards, and two shiny charizards from paldean fates. They’ll look so sick in a glass case on a shelf above the binders.
