There has been a lot of negativity shone on Pokemon Cards over the past few years when it comes to money. The idea behind selling Pokemon Cards became a very tough subject during the pandemic due to many Pokemon Card Scalpers buying out inventory at big box retailers, and selling Pokemon Cards on the secondary market.
Over the past year, this stigma has changed. Many individuals who entered the Pokemon Card hobby to make a quick buck have exited with falling Pokemon Card Prices and turned their attention to other card games like One Piece or Sports Cards. As the healing process continues, talking about value associated with Pokemon Cards still ruffles a few feathers, but I feel it is important to discuss in order to make the best decisions when spending your budget for your Pokemon Card Collection.
In today's video, we calculate the best Pokemon Card Set to open in the Scarlet & Violet era. Utilizing Pokemon Card Pull Rates and Pokemon Card Prices, we are able to determine the average value associated with each Pokemon Booster Pack for every set released so far in the Scarlet & Violet Block. Loading up on Crown Zenith while it's still cheap. It won't stay under MSRP for more than another year. Best set since Evolving Skies to me.

Great content Danny. Love this data comparison to give us an idea of what makes the most sense to open. Of course, people will also consider their own preferences for chase cards, but this list is very helpful to make the best decisions.

I, too, loved ripping Paldea Evolved until recently I opened 24 sleeved boosters. 13 on one day and 11 a week later. I only got 2 pulls... an Arctibax IR from the 13 and a Pikachu ex from the 11, haha. REKT

Very informative video! I'm a huge pack opener, so the "fun cost" is something that's very important to realize. To be able to spend as much as I do in this hobby, I sell on eBay/TCGPlayer and play at my local card shop. Adding those things to this hobby, for me, makes it so much more fun. I would encourage more people to play the game. At first I was unsure about it, but now after about a month of playing its totally changed what this hobby means to me and in a good way.

I stopped buying sealed product years ago, but Crown Zenith got me into opening packs again, then 151 and Paldean Fates made me realize I was wasting my money again. I’ve gambled hundreds of dollars on ETBs and box collections and booster bundles on these two sets and haven’t pulled a single “money” card, or a single good playable staple card. Back to singles for me…again.

tbh not fair for Paldean fates to be there, confounds the data as its too new. Think 151 might bias the data as well but i enjoyed this comparison.

Cool individual cards, but lacks an internal theme for me. It's just a bunch of charizards mixed up in a very random set of Pokemon. SV Base was the legendary set, Paldea Evolved was the starter set ... but OBF? They could have done something with the fire/dark theme but nah. Instead, we get ... Tera Vespiquen and Eiscue? Who asked for this?

Basically Danny 151 good marketing from pokemon. 😜 Its obvious that temporal forces there will be some big expensive chases Danny but then when the next set is released then the prices for a lot of the chase cards in that set will come down. Imo it's paldea evolved and 151 even with the tougher pull rates. You can get 12-14 hits out of the other sets yet the hits be worth a $1 a pop. Only other set that seems to have held some value is Paradox Rift as well since it has quite a few playable cards.

Great video. Great info. A bit depressing to see how much the values have dropped. It would be very interesting to see this done again in 6 months when Paldean Fates and Paradox Rift sets are a bit older. I think 151 might hold, but I reckon the other two will fall. I’d also love to see the SwSh data.

I’m trying to get into playing the tgc, I’ve been playing the video game since emerald, but dang it’s hard to get the everything you need even after a booster and a elite trainer box. I got a good psychic deck but I need more energy for my water/grass/fire/dark deck

Looking at these numbers it seems clear that paldea evolved should be #1. Sure, 151 pack values are higher but good luck finding it under $5. I can find paldea evolved easily under $3/pack.

My favorite main set is paldea evolved and my favorite special set is paldean fates mostly bc Im a shiny hunter. I'ma ripper so these sets always will get you excited. But on the other hand 151 is in a island of it's own

I don’t recommend buying Pokemon cards if you’re trying to make money. It’s probably the worst thing to do if you’re trying to make money but they sure are a lot of fun.

Hi Phanny -- Love this type of video, it always discourages me from spending too much ripping, but I always grab some packs to open with the boys on the weekends so it's fun to know where I can get the most "value back" if I am not chasing something specific. Love all this as always Danny. To me the prices I don't worry about to much cos I am a collector. What does me here in uk are the people online who I deal with don't have the staff to update so a lot of the singles which have gone way down in price haven't been altered much at all here. I'm probably better off ordering maybe of somewhere like tcg & pay postage shipping. Like I think I want 9 or 11 cards for steam siege but they charging a lot still for the big cards. So to sum up shops here in uk say they haven't got enough staff to alter prices on single sales.🤔

Honestly I think part of the problem with scarlet & violet is the goofy hats. Not sure what Pokémon was thinking but they look stupid.

Came back to this video after opening my first ever Booster Box (usually go for tins/bundles/ETBs or loose packs). 9 hits from Paldea Evolved and no SIR in sight. 4 EX, 2 Full Art trainers (Falkner and Saguaro), Mismagius and Grafaiai IR and a Golden Super Energy
I wasn't looking for profit but at least hitting an SIR, or a 3rd IR. Man it's kinda put me off buying booster boxes honestly.
Love that this justifies me spending my collection dollars on more 151 :) btw Sam's club has a deal right now where you get 2 151 mini tins and a pokeball with 3 packs (2 lost origin and 1 silver tempest) for $28. So basically $4 a pack.
S&V is so much fun. About to rip into my second SV1 booster box, and I’m super excited...
...after finishing this video, I'm realizing that it's definitely time to stop breaking and start buying singles. No regrets. Still a fun set.

SV Base and OBF being the 2 lowest average value per pack really underscores how undesirable the new stacking tins are. 1 SV Base and 2 OBF per tin at a retail price of $15 is a big L in terms of value. I see almost no one excited to pick those up unfortunately.
Paldea Evolved is the standout set to me here. Middle of the road in terms of the average pack value, but when you factor in the harder hit rates of 151, Paldean Fates, and Paradox in terms of SIRs, it makes up a lot of ground in my eyes. No more double bangers and less than 1.0 SIR per BB average in Paradox really stifled the value of those packs and although the baby shinys in PAF have decent average value right now, they will only go down in time I'd imagine. Even despite Iono being massively reprinted, there are still a good number of IRs and SIRs in Paldea Evolved that keep the set afloat from a value perspective. PAF and 151 may be the most fun sets in this era so far, but they aren't consistent enough with their expected pull rates. Even though Pokemon says that booster boxes are not seeded, you do tend to hear far less horror stories of people going hundreds of packs without hitting a big chase card compared to specialty sets.
All that said, I'm loving the SV era so far and can't wait to rip some Temporal Forces in a couple weeks! Thanks for the great video, Danny

it seems like collectors have abandoned Paldaen Fates as well as the pure Charizard set (ahem, championspath) and all I can trust on value is 151. Small set, remarkable artwork, and a UNIQUE Charizard EX which is no where near as playable as the other Zard EX from gen 9. If you're in this for the money, you're not going to be very happy, but some 151 certainly takes the burn out of the Zard hunt

Personally I think it's sad what happened to Obsidian Flames, so many great cards but a set entirely ruined by Charizard in my opinion.

Hey Danny, one thought I had that would be interesting, is to give an example of the range of outcomes for these kind of videos. So for example, if you are expecting on average 1 SIR per box, you show the value with hitting the lowest priced SIR and then the highest priced SIR. I think what would make this interesting is it can help show when some sets have a pretty predictable range of outcomes, like lets say Scarlet & Violet Base set, where most things are closer in value, versus 151 where the difference between the charizard and Giovanni is massive. I just think it would be fascinating. Thanks so much for your work and information you put out!
The market for OP is sad because the wholesale cost is much lower ($65ish) but retailers are selling for $200. For this reason alone I don't support those sellers for anything anymore
I really need the shiny illustration charizard for obsidian flames if anyone has an extra. As for which set to rip packs from, I would recommend Paldea Evolved for quality art style, amazing illustration rares, and has more punch than the base set scarlet & violet in my opinion.

151 is just an amazing set top to bottom. Even most of the reverse holos are selling for over $1 on average so hands down the king of SV era so far and IMO it will stay that way continuing its climb as time goes on!!! Love the content presented here. I'm a data junkie and use it to determine what I buy as I like the idea of increasing my odds of pulling value from my packs! Thanks again for being so honest and open to anyone of like mind
I remember at prerelease I pulled 2 miraidon sir from S&V base. I sold them right away on ebay and got $170 each + shipping. I still have screenshots of the sales just to remember. I almost feel bad now 😂

Definitely love crown zenith, it’s the set that got me back into the Pokémon TCG, but I really like the Scarlett and violet era the more it comes out just bc of the amazing art on the cards which is not comparable to the older cards

Some LGS still charge over price based on the market instead of selling it at msrp. I’m glad Pokémon isn’t pricey like one piece where it’s over price from scalpers and LGS

Overall I think you will see paldean fates drop and it switch places with paldea evolved. Goes to show how much people love 151. It would be interesting to see this with some sword and shield sets now that they aren't releasing new products and prices for sealed are starting to rise on some of the sets.
Im not sure SV era will have anything super sought after. The artwork of the chade cards just is not there anymore imo. And of course the value cuz of hit rates.
Obsidian Flames needed a few more IRs and SIRs and it would have been a top set.
