Were you able to sell to those leads, though? This experiment is inconclusive without verification of conversion numbers after you emailed those leads to see if they were receptive to your offer.
Are you considering this for the book/movie project as well? Do you think it would work as well or is it overkill because you have another way of finding those types of people?

Love it. I've had variable results using data scrapers on Fiverr but haven't considered upwork before.
Given the need for more focused personalisation these days, it's a good tactic for cold email and even better, cold calling.

I think you're being very critical of the guy who over performed and invoiced for additional work, I don't think that is wrong to provide extra and invoice for it, that being said it was not the agreed figure. However he produced good quality leads so feel like you've knocked him down a peg for going above and beyond what is asked.

I tested more than +30 people for lead gen on Upwork & FIVER.
Here my 2 cents
Instructions: 80% won't follow entirely the instruction --- 20% won't follow at all the instruction ( yeah! Nobody followed at 100% the instructions).
This is why I stopped giving long instructions, completely useless.
Quality: Variable, some were soooooo bad that we could only use 5% of the lead generated... 😳. The best produce 85% of usable leads.
Pricing: no correlation between the price and the data quality
If the worker has to manually enter the data into Google forms, then they can't submit blank fields.
Maybe that's a possible solution?

Yes there is a difference.. These are not professional researchers just people who know google. No training and no knowledge of sources and data. I am a freelance researcher with a advanced degrees do lead generation. Huge difference. I won’t work for $6 an dollars. Google forms is not useful for this work. Excel. Only. It cuts productivity. Google forms. Also, the names already exist in various databases.

Hey Alex, long time after you posted this video. I have started a digital marketing agency and I've bought a lead list on Upwork for $150 (9000 leads). However, how do I know if these are high-quality leads that will likely be interested in hiring our agency? Is there a way to ask this to your media buyer or not?
Have you started getting leads? Its been 2 months?
How did the leads turn out? Is this also a way to get more quality leads that are more likely to do business with you or is this strictly a time saver so you dont have to do it yourself?

Seem like you got lucky Alex but your google doc may have helped to weed out the ones who don't want to follow instructions. I had the same experience as Damien W where most of the candidates didn't follow instructions, in fact, they just submitted work that was previously done. Don't think I would've paid the guy who went beyond what you asked for. Would've treated that as a freebie. Note to everybody: Stop giving good or excellent reviews to freelancers who do f*ck up work. You're keeping us from picking the best person.

What are you doing with this information. How is this sellable, like who wants to buy that information. Why do you need a list of other businesses like the one you are trying to run? Is it strictly to compare the data and success of one from another?

Lead gen freelancers are so hit or miss, its always a gamble when hiring one.
That's why you hire multiples and find the good ones

Very unhelpful. You know the quality of these scraped data leads sucks. They use data scraping software that is inaccurate. I hired over 100 contractors on upwork to do manual data scraping on LinkedIn. Only three followed directions. I collected 25,000 real high quality leads in one city. The way you are doing it is wrong.

Hiring a freelancer right is not the problem. You are all hiring from the third world with very cheap rates on very cheap upwork which is hurting Americans . You are outsourcing to India and Mexico so they have a middle class. None of these people are classically trained business researchers they can just do google. It’s a joke. I am a freelance researcher and upwork sucks totally and hurts Americans by pitting us against Asians and cheap labor pools. If they don’t do a good job, that’s because they really are not the best. Buddies you get what you ask for. Sorry for this comment.
Also many of the contact names exist in databases. I have over 35000000 us contacts alone in database subscriptions. I do lead generation as well.
