Hi Matt, I don't think you like comments on you personally but I have to say it's great to see you looking so fit and healthy. I've been following you since 2012.

Great video comparison. Decisions decisions. Cant decide what to do. I keep talking myself into circles because there doesn't appear to be a clear winner. The 400-2.8 and an 800pf sound like the perfect pair...but dang...that is a lot of money. The 600-f4 sounds like a good compromise, but then you have weight and not as much versatility being in the middle. The conundrum of first world problems...

I've had the 400 2.8TC since its release and have tens of thousands of shots with it. Absolutely love that lens. The image quality is hard to beat.

Please compare the 400mm f4.5 & 600mm f6.3 & 180-600mm head to head with & without the Tc. Because those who can afford the big primes will not even consider these 2 lens.
Whereas the 400mm f4.5 seems perfect for mammals like bigcats and is faster than both the 180-600,100-400 & 600pf. And if we do a DX crop on the 400mm f4.5 it's 600mm at 4.5 exposure with 19MP on Z8. So it really looks a well balanced wildlife lens with priority to mammals.
The 600mm f6.3 for birds is good and 180-600 has the versatility covering both of these lenses.
So that comparison will be more interesting.

Wish we could see some more comparison with the 800PF. Also the 400/4.5 with 1.4TC vs 600/6.3. Great video as always.

I agree. I think the real comparison is with the 400/4.5 with the 1.4TC because the 400 is currently on sale. It would be great to see if the 600/6.3 really justifies the price difference between the two

  • @craigmiller332

400/4.5 with and without 1.4TC, 500PF/5.6 + FTZ, maybe even any of the last F-mount big glass + FTZ, since lightly used late versions are far cheaper than the Z 400/2.8 & 600/4.
    Overall, I'm liking the 400/4.5 & 800/6.3 with and without 1.4TC & 500PF w/FTZ. If I had some once in a lifetime trip, I might consider renting the 400/2.8 or 600/4.

    • @Ben_Stewart
      @Ben_Stewart 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's my current combo. 400/4.5 with 1.4 TC and the 800PF. The 70-200 fills the wide gap.

Hi Matt, do you think the 800mm pf is better than the 400mm f2.8 and 2x teleconverter for birds? It looks like you have both and I just got the 400mm to use along with the 800mm. Still working to compare the two.

I have the Z600pf and like you stated, handholding it all day is not a problem and the images are of very high prime quality. I love this lens! The cost of the Z600pf is as high as I want to go. I love the Z 800pf but I wouldn't use it enough. Matt, as always very good video.

I use the 500 PF and would have gladly updated to the 600 PF it had been f5.6. My best Z option is the 400 f4.5, but that is shorter than I need for wildlife, so it looks like I keep the 500 PF.

As a non professional I find that the 400/4.5 S to be perfect for my usage with my Z8. I'm quite happy to use the DX to crop to 600mm. I cant see a scenario where I could justify getting a Z 600 f6.3 lens.

400 even in DX mode isn’t enough for me but then I’m into bird photography.

I have 600mm tc, 800mm pf and 600mm pf. Both 600mm with 1.4x =840mm and 800mm have same sharpness cross frame at their max aperture. I do bird photography, so the longer, the better. The reason I have three because they are for different situations. I specialize bird in flight. Small bird in flight needs lighter lens.

All of these lenses look like they have excellent IQ, and with the 600 TC, I didn’t notice any spherical aberration (glow around lighter elements) when the built-in 1.4x tele converter was switched in. Bravo Nikon!

if only considering size and weight, then I will go with 600pf. and then maybe down the line with enough saving, will get the z 400 TC

Ah, more Z hardware mere mortals cannot afford. I joined the Nikon "caravan" back in the early 1980s when Nikon released the EM and its E Series lenses. These were so good I still shoot with the E Series 50mm F1.8 and the E Series 75-150 F3.5, a legendary lens in its own right. Why Nikon does not choose to revisit this entry-level strategy beats me. Mind you, they are no longer the biggest sellers, so I can't say their current product strategy is winning for them. They can still make and sell these halo Z Series products and make an entry-level line without eating into their pro sales.

I heard the 400mm f/2.8 really plays nicely with the Z teleconverters and you can get some nice IQ and an 800mm lens by Adding a 2X TC. What is your opinion on adding the 2X TC for even more versatility.

great video. but I have to say, you (or anyone) looks amateur and foolish shooting sports with those lenses without a monopod. who would pay 14k for a lens and not 200-300 bucks for a basic monopod? so your test is really an extreme scenario.
