Hi Alannah! I just got accepted to University of Ottawa in Biomedical Sciences for undergrad, and my dream is to become a dentist! I would love to go study in Australia for dental school and I am really grateful for you and your videos; you showed me it is possible! I’ll continue working hard and one day perhaps I’ll be able to go to Australia for dentistry! Thank you 😊
Hi Maxime! Congratulations on your acceptance! I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos and that they are inspiring you. Good luck with your undergrad and I hope you get to come here too! 😊
Hi Alannah! I am a 3rd-year student from Western University and planning to apply to the University of Melbourne for Dentistry. I saw online that they asked for English in some way. What was your path to Melbourne as a Western student in particular? I would love to have a detail conversation if possible about the application.
Hi Joe! I don't believe English is a pre-requisite course to have in order to apply if this is what you are referring to! At Western I took Health Sciences through which I took anatomy and physiology, but biochemistry was an elective for me. The application is quite straightforward when you apply through the OzTrekk website. They go through it with you on their website step by step. I believe they just require a transcript from undergrad as well as your DAT transcript. There are no statements required. oztrekk.com/programs/dentistry/ If you would like to talk further, send me a message on instagram 😊. Hope I helped in some way!
Thank you so much for the video, it was really helpful. I'm actually in my undergrad right now in ryerson and hoping to get into Australia for dentistry. By the way, do you happen to know what average GPA are they looking for in order to get accepted?
Hey Carmina! Glad you liked the video and found it helpful. The average accepted GPA changes per year and is dependant on the pool of applicants for that year. I can tell you my GPA calculated based on the Western University calculation: 4th year 3.7, 3rd year 3.9, 2nd year 3.3. Some others in my class had GPA's that ranged from 3.3-3.5 also. So it really just depends. The University of Melbourne uses a 3-2-1 GPA weighting so 4th year is weighted 3, 3rd year weighted 2, and 2nd year weighted 1. Hope this helps answer your question 😊!
@@joezhou2558 Hi Joe! I mean my classmates in Melbourne who also went to university in Canada for their undergrad (Western, McMaster, and U of T are the main ones from Ontario)
Hi Alannah! I've been finding your videos super helpful as a 4th year Canadian student hoping to study in Australia. From the admissions website of U of Melbourne, GPA calculation seems to be quite different, with a 7.0 for 80+. Was this how they calculated GPA from % grades, or should I not convert it when calculating my GPA? Sorry in advance for the long question! If not too personal, are you planning on returning to Canada to practice dentistry/know of other Canadians' plans?
Hi Stephanie! Thanks for the comment 😊. So yes, I think that would be how they calculate your GPA if that is what is posted on their admissions page. If you want to convert it just to have an idea of what it would be, then it doesn't hurt to do that. Personally, I didn't convert mine, it doesn't change what you are applying with in the end! Sorry, I know that answer isn't the most helpful. And yes I am planning on returning to Canada! I believe all the Canadians in my year level except for 1 or 2 will be going back to practice in Canada. It's a super easy process, where you just write the same board exam that Canadian dental graduates write and then you can practice as you would if you studied dentistry in Canada! Hope this helps 🤗
Hey Alannah! I'm a junior undergrad from NY State and I'm really considering AUS for dental school. Would you say it was difficult to get into the school you wanted? my DAT score is 19AA and my GPA is 3.70, would I have a good chance if I applied to all 3 schools?
Hi Sarah! That's amazing 😊. It wasn't overly difficult comparatively to schools in Canada and the US, but it allowed me to go into dental school directly after undergrad when I didn't get in my first try to Canadian schools. I also only applied to the one school which I am attending now (University of Melbourne) so I am not sure how difficult the other schools are to get into. The chances depend on the applicant pool that you are applying with. I would say go for it! But keep in mind if you are planning on returning to practice in the US I don't believe Australian dental education is accredited there as of now? Good luck with everything! 🥰
hi! do you think it is possible for a 3.0 gpa (as of end of second year) in canada with 10 withdrawals can get in. i had a hard time adjusting to uni life, hence the withdrawals
Hi Omar, I'm not 100% sure about how that affects your chances to get in. By withdrawals do you mean dropping classes? I think as long as you take what is needed and get your degree, that should be alright. But I would ask Oztrekk about that to be sure! oztrekk.com/programs/dentistry/
Hey! I'm so sorry, I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly - as in, do an undergraduate dentistry degree? Or, do an undergraduate degree in Australia to get into dentistry afterwards? If you are wondering whether or not to do an undergraduate dental degree in Australia, you just need to think about what is best for you! Mostly, in terms of whether you would like to do a 5 year or 4 year program and whether or not you have already completed an undergraduate degree in Canada (or other country). Hope this helps! 😊
Hey Alannah! Your videos are very helpful and I am so excited to possibly pursue dentistry in Australia. I am currently a first-year student from the University of Waterloo in Canada. I am interested in applying to the undergraduate pathway to dentistry in Australia. Is a degree from that pathway valid in Canada as a dentist degree? Also, what grade range should I aim for to have the best chance to get into Australian dental school?
Hey Dhruvi! That's amazing and I hope you are enjoying your first year so far 😊YES the undergraduate dental degrees in Australia are valid to work as a dentist in Canada! The undergraduate and graduate degrees are considered equivalent when you go back to Canada. If you know that this is what you want to do you can even consider completing your current undergrad in 3 years as a 3-year bachelors degree is recognized to be accepted into Australian dental schools. Just something to consider if you wanted to go to dental school sooner! The entrance GPA is always changing depending on those that are applying at the same time as you! If it helps- I was accepted for the 2018 year with a Western University calculated GPA of 3.7 in my 4th year, 3.9 in my 3rd year, and 3.3 in my 2nd year (not my best year lol). I hope this helps and lemme know if you have any more questions! Good luck 🥰
