    JUST WANTED TO QUICKLY SAY: I forgot to mention in the video, but obviously if you enjoy one of these albums, no hate towards you or the artist who made the project. Just because I might not have enjoyed something or a bald man on the internet didn't enjoy something doesn't mean you have to hate it. Thank you all for the support on this video and all of my content from 2022, if you want more video essays or music opinion videos, feel free to subscribe! ❤️

    There's an online theory about Father of All... It pretty much says Green Day wanted to just fulfill their contract with Reprise and then do their own thing. As a songwriter myself, that just feels incredibly freeing to not put yourself in a box or feel defined by previous works. Even if it was just a contractual Album. I think one of the major contributions to "The Big Day" getting a zero is that the worst part of the album is Chance himself. You might get some great production or a decent feature and then Chance comes in and almost ruins it. Imagine putting out a project that would be mostly improved by removing your contributions. Tones and I to me is like the total opposite of 100 gecs. Like Dylan and Laura show an eclectic range of styles from album to album, track to track, moment to moment, instrument to instrument. yet they got a real good understanding on stuff like catchy melodies and impactful beats, when to reel in the kookyness for something more conventional like Stupid Horse or Hollywood Baby, or when to strike the listener when they least expect it with something extra messed like a drop-dead noise wall or a collection of samples that concludes in a ballad about abusive boyfriends
    Tones and I just sounds like every acrid trope from music of the last 10 years and condenses it into raw, unfiltered, cringe. Only learning the production values and aesthetics of acts like Imagine Dragons and Adele, without taking notes on what people actually authentically enjoy their music

Given the experimental music in this album, I can't help to compare it to Injury Reserve's "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" which I feel like more appropriately mixes the experimental and alternative sound to hip hop. Then again, that album was made to mourn and respect the member they lost, while Cudi's album was most likely born out of shame and depression.

    Its important to understand the strategy behind these albums too. The mad house album and ken carson tap into more of the cheap pop realm of music and serve as the metaphorical McDonald's of music.
    These albums arent meant to give u an intricate, multi-course meal and an experience to walk away with, rather they throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and hope as much of it sticks, aka goes viral.
    At the end of the day you go to McDonald's, get the exact same big Mac and fries you got last time and go away until you feel for it again. Even though you know theres not much value there, you know which burgers you like and its cheap and easy.

    One critique I have is that I think you can really do the old sound of the past and make it good. I just think Green Day missed the mark entirely on that front. I also disagree that you can't mention teens in your music when your older, I think if you know your target audience,then go for it. And I know some are gonna say that most of their audience is old now but I'm very much sure the rest just like me are young adults since I still see younger people sporting late 90's to early to mid 2000's punk/rock/metal shirts

      I can agree. The sound obviously has worked in the past, but this album did a disservice to the classic rock sound. I also agree that there are plenty of younger Green Day fans (some of their classic tracks BANG), but I think the lyrical content on this album was complete pandering. I still think that if you want this sound or style, the classic albums are a safer bet, but I do agree that there are plenty of modern groups making great rock stuff (heck, Ants from up there released in 2022!)

    Honestly I think you have a great personality. Also something you said during this video really stuck with me. I use “like” a lot in my own videos. So I realized it might be better to change that up before it becomes worse. Anyways, this was a cool experience although I didn’t listen to the albums I found this experience to be enjoyable. Some of the verses had me laughing ngl. Good video 👍

    I feel like the biggest disappointment of The Big Day was that it's was Chances first commercial album. It had more money and supposedly more time put into than his other projects.
    So when the albums that were funded using Kit Kat commercial money are seemingly leagues better with more thought and effort put into them, WHILE still keeping the light-hearted nature that The Big Day leans into, it makes the album worth that 0 score.
    On a side note: When people started clowning on Chance for the lackluster and poor performance of The Big Day, he lashed out on Twitter, attacking not only trolls but legitimate fans who were disappointed at the albums quality. Along with firing a long-time friend who revealed that the album was rushed and not well put together. While this has nothing to do with the songs on the record itself, I believe it's the reason why people say The Big Day ruined Chances career.

    I always thought of his system as a 0-10 rating system. 1-10 doesn't seem right as a rating range, like, if someone gets absolutely everything wrong how would they get a point for it? 1/10 seems it's 10% right to me

      @Quirkay  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That was one of the better tracks for sure, I just didn’t think it had that same punch or memorability that some older Cudi songs have. I’m also just not a fan of the vocal style Cudi used on this album in general. If you enjoy the song, that is awesome!

  • @pastelgothmoney
    @pastelgothmoney ปีที่แล้ว +5

    1:10:44 “why not listen to a song with more lyrical content and slightly weaker instrumentation?” People aren’t coming for lyrical content. Rage as a genre is marked with the sacrifice of lyricism for energy by design and therein lies the appeal. Nobody listens to a rage track to be lyrically regaled. It’s moshpit music. This isn’t a perfect comparison, but it’s like expecting Kurt Cobain to belt out Bob Dylan (or more realistically, Paul McCartney) level lyricism.
    (p.s. X isn’t a very good rage album as a whole and I’m not defending it. This more pertains to the entire genre.)

    • @Quirkay
      @Quirkay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After listening to more projects in this genre, this makes a lot of sense. Obviously, I still don't really enjoy the album, but after listening to WLR and even Project X from Ken Carson, the style makes more sense to me. I don't think I was expecting Kendrick-level lyricism, but something like WLR's repetitive lyrics make much more sense for the style as opposed to comparing yourself to a turd LMFAO
