Vintage Kenwood Stereo System with Klipsch Heresy Speakers

  • This is a brief rundown of my vintage audio system from 1980.
    The system is comprised of:
    Kenwood KT-7500 AM-FM Stereo Tuner
    Kenwood KA-8100 DC Stereo Integrated Amplifier
    Kenwood KX-1060 Stereo Cassette Deck
    Bang & Olufsen Beogram 3404 Turntable
    The amp powers a pair of 1980 Klipsch Heresy loudspeakers.
    This is a fantastic system in great working condition. I listen to rock from the 60's through today, and the sound quality is great for anything I play. There is a very definitive and rocking bass, but the mid and high parts are not muddied or hidden.

    Nice system. Glad to see younger people recognize the value and quality of the high end 80's gear. Everything has pretty much went downhill in the consumer grade market since then. I could explain all those dials if I wanted to write a book but I'm pretty sure they'll become self explanatory as you learn a little more. The 100 hz 3000hz etc. are the audio frequency the control is centered around for starters. Also I haven't read all your reply's so i may be repeating but the dual power supplies where used in a couple of ways. The most common was on very high end equipment in which a stereo amplifier was actually two completely separate mono amplifiers in one case (dual mono design). In this case however, I believe, they use two power supplies for more headroom. Meaning when your playing your Motley Crew and Tommy starts kickin the bass drum there is enough power at the ready to hit those speakers hard enough to produce the peak sound without running out of breath, if that makes sense. Just another way stereos are seriously lacking today. Also I read a comment about you may need better speakers. I tend to agree with you that it must be your camcorder not sounding right because Heresy speakers where right near the top of the pile when it came to compact loudspeakers, easily as good or better than the Kenwood amp. In fact the whole system seems very well matched. Your dad has a good ear for sound and I'm afraid you've inherited it :) Enjoy ! Oh btw did you say your in a dorm?? your neighbours must love you :p

      This is not high end. Not even for 1980s. Krell, creek, cyrus, that's high end.

      Calm down Audio snob. Obviously, this isn't in same league as Threshold/Pass, Conrad Johnson, Krell, etc, but within the narrow realm of high-quality receivers from this era, this IS High End. It's attitudes like yours that give our hobby a cork-sniffing, elitist image and turn young people off. It's about the music, not the price-tag at an Audio store in San Francisco. I've owned everything from junk to "High-End" gear, and just as it is with Music gear ( or Sports Cars, Art, Wine, etc ) paying more does NOT guarantee a better experience.

      It was the parts that were inside .
      Like big dual transformers
      Fijitsu 10 transistors
      Trio Darlington powerpacks ...
      Rest assured the new stuff uses low quality parts from China
      Not Japan when the quality was very good and they had talented design teams not patent thieves more concerned with making a quick buck .
      Plus it was common and there was a demand and many servicemen in the military it was a hobby they could enjoy stuck on bases overseas .
      Old kenwood is exellent and very overlooked as is vintage sony and some tube amplifiers.
      Much more robust and warm sounding than units from today sans high end and even then sometimes better.

    I also had the marantz speakers. In today’s money, the whole system I had (similar to that one) would be in the $2,000-$2,500 range. It was not cheap back then!

    Awesome setup that your father passed along to you. I, too got into stereo equipment (albeit much younger) from my father's old Kenwood amplifier being found in the basement. His was a KA-7100 (one step down, 60 WPC versus your 75), an old Modular Component Systems tuner, and a pair of custom re-built (ECI?) cabinets with Herald Muscle Magnets and so forth. Not quite so upscale as your father's set - but enough that I started a lifelong love of gear.
    Cherish these pieces - they are not making any more and since I started buying my own vintage gear I have watched prices roughly quadruple. Don't sell it, though - you can never replace the fact that this was dad's old system!

    Nice
    Your father would be proud of you.
    I love Kenwood.
    Just like you, my 24 yo son loves vintage music and stereo.
    I still have my KA-6100 amp and KX-620 cassette, which I purchased in 1979.
    Last month I completed my stack by purchasing a KT-7500 tuner (like yours) from eBay USA. ( I never ever saw one in NZ)
    I still have my 1979 Akai turntable, but am currently bidding on a Kenwood KD-3077 off eBay USA, to further complete my setup.
    I run recapped and refoamed JVC SK 1000 II period speakers, which I bought recently. (I used to have JVCs and JBL L36s from 1978/1979)
    Looks fantastic.
    I know my boy will treasure them as you do your dad's.
    A very nice video.
    Cheers.

    Back then in 1980 I remember that that kind of sound system cost us arm and a leg at least here in the Philippines because we are in developing country. To most of us it cost several months of our wage that only reach can afford. It was considered a status symbol.

  • @RkadeKicks
    @RkadeKicks  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh for sure! The speakers are definitely what stand out in this system. They were sitting our living room for years, next to the tv but not hooked up. I'm so glad I asked if I could take them.

  • @gedisdiop

    You have a GREAT match. The Heresy speakers are state-of-the-art with nothing to compare. You are a very lucky guy to have this system. To have the cassette & turntable serviced would do you justice. They are HIGH quality and deserve to be serviced. Music just needs to be listened in 2 channel (stereo). No surround. That's just for movies.
    The B&O turntable is made in Sweden, and their cartridges can be spendy, but you get what you pay for. Vinyl is still being made in Europe, and has unparalleled sound quality.
    You have an heirloom quality system. Enjoy it and take care of it. Great video.

      @RkadeKicks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much! I've actually done a little more work on the cassette player since I made this video, although I haven't done much to the turntable yet. I personally prefer the sound of the Klipsch's over many modern similarly sized speakers.

      There are recommended updates for the X-overs for these Heresys.

    • @RkadeKicks
      @RkadeKicks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have any more information about that? I'd be curious to look more into it.

    • @raymonddixon1656
      @raymonddixon1656 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rees Klintworth
      The oil caps in these dry out thereby lowering the value and raising the x-over point. This may be one of the reasons you have to turn your treble up. This will put you at risk of blowing your tweeters due to distortion. Many of this model have blown tweeters. Google Heresy x-over upgrades for tons of suggestions. The improvement is worth it. Oil caps definately fail over time, so if they are not bad, they will be down the road. Iron core chokes are a poor choice as well. Use air core.

    The KT-7500 came out in 1978, it originally sold for $310.00 and has five gangs and five filters. The KA-8100 was produced between 1978-1980 and produced 75 watts per channel. In the KA line they made a KA-9100 which produced 90 wpc. and there was a Japan only model KA-9300 which produced 120 watts per channel.

    I picked up the same Kenwood amp and tuner last week that came with 2 Pioneer speakers for $17 at the DAV store. Sign said no remote. LOL. They didn't have remotes back then. My setup is Sansui quad I built in 1973.

    I appreciate the feedback! I actually used to have the amp on the bottom, but I generally keep it in the middle because I actually like how it looks, and also it is easier to get at the back when I need to. I've messed around with the equalization a lot and as crazy as it might seem this is really where I like it, although next time I'm home I'll definitely give those settings a shot and see how I like it. Either way, it is definitely a wonderful system. Thanks for checking this out!

    I agree with vatchvult concerning the tone controls, to a point. The sound WILL be cleaner with them defeated and out of the signal path, but this is subjective. If you like a judicious amount of added bass or treble then ok. But notice I said judicious, not prodigious. Cranking the bass up all the way requires you also crank up the treble. Try starting with a flat signal and listening that way for some time. If bass or treble is lacking,, then make a slight adjustment there and listen again.

    No matter how well protected from the elements, analog equipment has components that change values over time. The analog parts most likely to deteriorate are capacitors, and second are the resistors.. All of the deteriorated components should be replaced with modern longer lasting premium versions. The tuner and amplifier stages need to be aligned after replacing the old out of spec components. Speaker capacitors and possibly some resistors also need replacement. Contrary to a common practice of replacing the laminated core inductors on Klipsch models I leave them in place unless measurements show them out of spec (very rare). This systems still plays after 40 years, however the quality and accuracy of the music will improve if the component restoration, and needed maintenance are done. The Heresy I units can be upgraded using the tweeter (titanium diaphragms are available) , and polymer squawker from the Heresy II (H-1 originals are phenolic). The 1980 ceramic magnet model K-22- woofer is A-ok if the voice coil reads 6.7 Ohms.

    Klipsch Heresy's are the best! I still have my fathers Heresy E's from 1977... I love them, sparkling highs are complimented by the boom of my Pioneer CS-88's. I power them with a Pioneer Spec 2 amp with matching pre (Spec 1). I love vintage audio, thanks for sharing!

    Setting your tone turnovers and loudness are ways to adjust and boost bass and treble frequencies. Keep in mind the flattest most accurate sound is when tones are set to 0 and loudness button is off.

    LATE POST:
    I am an audiophile and those speakers are $1500 to $2000 each in 1980. I had a pair, turned them into 6 foot tall tower speakers with 15's. Best speakers i ever had, wore them out. Your settings or cables or wires are not set right. Try the loudness button, make sure your cables are pos and neg properly from the stereo to the speakers. Also i would not run any stereo system without an EQ. Those speakers like to be on the floor. up like that makes them more tinny. The problem with sound is that those speakers require very high power. That Amp is only pushing 60 to 70 watts a channel, you need a min of 100. Those speakers were actually made for bars and clubs, very durable, no you wont even come close to blowing them on that little system. They have no baffling in them, so that makes them also tinny. Also no port, they are sealed design wich i never cared for either. They were designed tight and compact but very loud. The bass is more high than low but you can get good sound from them. You wont here alot of bass from them unless you have them high powered and on the floor in corners or in different boxes. Home made boxes are far more superior than factory alot of times, those are thick plywood, also not good for sound. If you need any help just ask. Its hard to say everything you know is such a short space. I had a Kenwood with Hersey's before in the 80's. The 80's were the best of times, when music was still good.

    • @RkadeKicks
      @RkadeKicks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kayden Greyson thanks for the info. I normally have them on the floor, but space in my dorm room didn't really allow it that year. It definitely does make a big difference.

    • @christopheraugustine5816
      @christopheraugustine5816 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kayden Greyson The KA-8100 is 75 WPC RMS, he is not lacking for power.
      As for placing them on the floor to increase the bass - that is just transferring vibration from the cabinet into the floor, effectively making it a large transducer. This makes for poorer quality sound, and the perceived increase is all just a false notion based on turning vibration that these cabinets were intended to eat into muddled noise.

    Heresys always lacked enough bass. Look to upgrade to Klipsch Chorus for something about the same size and a bump up in bass.. When you get out of the dorm and into a house find Klipsch K- Horns. And for sure at some point be sure to at least try a tube amp with any Klipsch, you like it now? Just Wait Tubes and Dark Side of the Moon and you will hear things you never will with SS. And FYI I bought a pair of LaScalas in high school 1974-75 they earned the nickname Lease Breaker...LOL enjoy

    As for the Stylus on the B&O, $150-$200 isn't extravagant. I've seen TT cartridges for $15,000, and any below $60 aren't worth consideration. The B&O decks are nice with their touch controls, a friend had one back in the 70's. Enjoy your Dad's old gear and treat it with the respect it deserves, then give it to your kids down the road.

    Just wanted to make some comments. First the Klipsch speakers are pronounced ( hear say), why? Paul Klipsch is noted for the FOLDED HORN speaker (the Klipsch-horn). He believed strongly in this principal and considered any other speaker to be HERESY or hear say. Get it? When he did make a conventional speaker, he called it HERESY.
    Your Kenwood amp is really a nice component. The separate power supplies give lower distortion. Your KA-8100 also has bidirectional dubbing, variable loudness, frequency turnovers for bass/treble, two phono inputs probably MM/MC, filters- Subsonic (18hz@6db/oct), High (8khz@12db/oct) and Bass (40hz@12db/oct). The Sub should have a slope of 15db/oct or more. Just my opinion.
    Power output is 75wpc (RMS) but the KA- 8100 puts out 90wpc into 4 ohms, NICE!! THD is 0.03% and signal/noise is 85db phono and 110db line, very nice, and it weighs 32lbs.
    A very nice integrated amplifier. I like the tuner and cassette deck, Kenwood made some good ones, but I don't want to bore you with more of my ranting. All in all a truly great system. I'd be proud to own it!!

    Haha thanks. I've been hearing that so much I guess I should give it a whirl. Also, I keep a decent amount of space around the amp, and it never gets very warm at all.

    Very nice! I've searched around my grandmas house, and the only things I can find are the manual for the KT-7500 and the Klipschs. That's cool that you still have it all.

    I don't dislike midrange per-say, but I really like more of the booming bass accompanied by the treble of the main guitar part and such. Even when I turn it up loud it's JUST loud; this setup gives more of a defined bass sound. It's probably not a common setup and most audiophiles would denounce it I'm sure haha. But I like how it sounds and I've messed with different settings and everything for a LONG time haha. This is my personal favorite way to enjoy the rock music I listen to.

    Ya man if you set b the bass and treble in the center detent position it would sound alot better original recordings was already recorded with perfect amount of eq ,compression,etc if you want extra bass just use the loudness switch it works on frequencys that want muddy the sound unlike cranking the bass and treble controls Wich will muddy and add noise to the sound that amp should have tone control defeat switch Wich will remove the bass and treble controls from the circuit for a purer sound bass and treble controls and eq is usually for flawed system s Wich you dont have .I collected vintage audio for years you have a great set up I wouldn't change a thing and the fact that it belong to your dad makes it special dont ever get rid of it you'll regret it for the rest of your life they don't make this quality anymore actually they do but your gonna pay thousands. I hope your playing records if not I would buy a new stylus for that turntable and you'll discover a whole new quality of sound you didnt know existed

    I have the KT-7500 tuner. I have the KA-7300, KA-8100, and the KA-9100, and the 8100 is built the best, with dual power supply. I also have those Klipsch Heresys, known for their high efficiency. Kenwood decks are harder to find. I have a Pioneer CT-F1200. My B&O turntable is a different model. Oh, the 9100 uses IC's for power output, while the 8100 uses discrete metal outputs.

      Interesting! I always thought one of the less impressive pieces of my system was the Kenwood deck, but apparently I was wrong

    • @raymonddixon1656

      Correction. The KA-9100 uses a dual power supply as well, but the output IC's are less durable.

    That's basically how I do it now. I started out with it fairly flat, no eq, and then adjusted from there. With that said it's been awhile since I've adjusted it so I'm probably going to try and mess around with it and see if this is still where I like the sound.

  • @RkadeKicks

    That's interesting! I've read something about that, but I find one thing kind of weird. I have the original literature that came with the speakers, and there's a paper titled "Instructions for Heresty H-700". One of the lines is "The HERESY, like ALL other speakers, sounds better in a corner. Don't take our word for it, try it yourself." Haha but nonetheless, they are fantastic speakers!

    your speakers will work alot better with tube amps. solid state amps don't work well with horns. worked on a ton of kenwood stuff thru the years. 30 year audio technician. ear fatigue set's in after awhile. tubes keep the horns mellow. that's why Paul Klispch always recommended low power single ended tube amps for his speakers. i build my own tube amps now, In my opinion paper tweeter midrange and woofer would be the way to go

  • @TheRealSpacewalrus

    Great old system! I would try some rubber drive cleaner (sometimes known as re grip) for the belts (the belts may be hard to find) and especially the pinch rollers. If the pinch rollers have any glazing this will remove it. Just a bit neat info on the Heresy speakers, they were originally designed to be a "center" speaker. Klipsch built speakers to fit in the corners of a room & when this was designed it was suggested that it was heresy for it to not be in a corner hence the name.

  • @ejcheck
    @ejcheck 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just rebuilt a pair of Heresy 1s. You might want to redo the 30yr old X-overs - either new caps or replace.
    Crites in Arkansas has all the parts you need to bring them up to date.
    www.critesspeakers.com/
    If you're curious here's the video on my rebuild:
    th-cam.com/video/h3j2P8cjEoo/w-d-xo.html
    These are a great sounding speaker. Perhaps a little shy in the bass region but most systems have an SW in them these days, so it's really not an issue.

    In response to your Heresy placement instructions, the horns are very efficient. you need the help of acoustics to get the woofers to keep up. In other words, it helps to equalize your tone balance between the 3 drivers.

    Very nice equipment which as others have said, we're built to a higher standard than modern consumer electronics. Also, while I would do some tweaks with the turnovers and tone controls, you do what your ears tell you sounds good. We all hear music differently and while "the purists" say no boost or cut to the tone controls, I've never been able to tolerate the bland lifeless sound that accompanies those settings. Adjust away because good sound is in the ear of the beholder.

    Turn the Bass and Treble back to 3/4 of the dial...with it turned up to max it will cause the amp to start "clipping" and ruin the quality of the sound at end of wire also known as the Speakers...also if you really wish to make a Million Dollar difference in your system you must add equalization to the mix set the the B and T to the zero setting meaning pointing straight up on dial and set the EQ to enhance the Decibel rang...meaning if you like bass raise the first set of toggles and do this a syou are listing to the music and adjust accordingly.

  • @szegledi

    Nice Kenwood, but your speakers are your down fall. That Kenwood solid state amp would sound better with a better pair of speakers in my opinion. Also try keeping your treb set 8 instead of 10 and your bass at 6 not ten , you'll get a better and richer sound. As far as the loudness button , you can leave that on. That gives it a more deeper sound for mids and Bass. I recommend getting some three way speakers with 12 inch drivers (woofers) or 3 way speakers with 15 inch drivers (woofers) rated at 8ohms. Trust me it will sound so much better and will hit alot harder than those speakers you're running now. I dont know if it was your camera or just the speakers, but i heard alot distortion coming from those speakers. Distortion is not what your looking for.

    • @RkadeKicks
      @RkadeKicks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, my DSLR camera is not adequately equipped to capture the sound output from those speakers. Although not the largest or most powerful Klipsch speakers, they are very clear without distortion or clipping. The Heresy is actually a three way speaker with 12 inch woofers. In person, the quality of these speakers rivals any similar sized speakers I have ever heard, both new and old.

      szegledi You obviously dont know anything about these Klipsch,

    • @sirsmarty274
      @sirsmarty274 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rkade Kicks Yes they do, these people dont know anything about these speakers. If i had them i would do again what i did before. Build 6 foot tall boxes, add a 15 inch woofer and they will sound better than speakers costing 20 grand today with the right high end amp. I had them hooked to Harman Kardon's 2.0 and 2.1 system for a few years and they sounded better than a $20,000 set up. These things woke up many neighbors, the deepest bass ever and the clearest highs and mids ive ever heard still today. I know my audio and i know what what im doing and i know how to build speakers. Theres nothing wrong with those Klipsch, they just need to be in bigger better boxes. The drivers are to close together, not ported and not baffled. If i were you i would come up with a design, and build boxes.
