John, I love your story! The gentleman you met with sounds like a superstar. I especially love that he brought you a signed copy of Lewis' book. I hope others see this and follow the example. Thanks for sharing!
So it's not a waste of time as long as the meeting is about the person with the job. It's a waste of time if the meeting is about the person who needs a job, might have a family to feed, bills unpaid, etc. I hate humans. I really do. Humans are great for conversation and having fun. However, the second you need anything from humans, they are creeped out or annoyed. We are a mediocre species that is only nice when things benefit ourselves. When someone else needs something, they are considered annoying, losers, failures etc. I really wish we could be more honest. And by the way, it is so easy to give such adviced when well-dressed and sitting in a corporate headquarters. Us non-coders, non-engineers are quickly being expelled from society. We are considered annoying beggars when we try to reach out to a company. How ridiculous is that? A person is willing to reach out to a company so that the company may not have to conduct a time-consuming job search. And the reward: ''Oh, that person is annoying and desperate. Why didn't he take me out so I can talk about myself?''
Agree 100%. I think the hiring process should be more straightforward. And lets end all the social games. Reality hasnt changed yet however. So this guys advice is the pragmatic direction to take.
Not hard selling seems to be the prevaiking wisdom out there. But for those on the other side of the table, why? Why is that so problematic? If someone asked me I need a job and I had the power to help...I would. I have.
This is a very situational context. The question is how to approach someone without sucking up to them insincerely orv sincerely verses honesty of hey can we meet because x, or "would you be willing to chat on x topic" ,when the reality is that person was/is no less desperate than the other person but favor is given for smoozing.
I just got off the phone with a Microsoft Recruiter. He said that it's going to take him a couple of days to find a team to introduce me to. The thing is, I have zero professional experience and am a self-taught programmer. So, no degree or certifications of any kind. All I wish for is to get my foot in the door. I hope it all works out.
I would rather someone just cut to the chase and ask me. I do not have a lot of time in my day. Why do people always need to use WIIFM? What happened to being a human and helping someone? I miss the 90's... people were much more human then. Why do we need all these games to connect? Gracious humans are complex.

Timeboxing the meeting up front is a great suggestion, thanks for sharing! Bringing a book to share was a great idea too. Great video, thanks!
Thanks for sharing this story! Took some notes and will be using these tips to reach out to professionals on LinkedIn.

That is an awesome story! Did he get a job at Amazon eventually???
he took a role at Boeing actually, but he laid down some great tactics :)
This gave me no info on LinkedIn
He messaged me through LinkedIn - and the strategic side of it what how he approached it.

What kind of nonsense is he talking?
