I have tried many times to fit myself into one of the popular cleaning systems and always fail. I have picked up some good habits from them though. Now I just have my own thing going simply by observing my house and noticing how often things need to be done to stay on track. I do a big block of cleaning one day on the weekend and then spend a little time every morning before work maintaining. It's not for everyone but so far it's working for me.

I have fun tips as a former very messy person
Declutter declutter declutter…it’s really life changing and the less you have to clean
Always leave a room clean when leaving it
Always go from one room to another with something to put away
Fast Vacuum daily ( it makes you keep stuff off the floor )
Don’t leave dishes in the sink wash it or put it in the dishwasher
Do things weekly so it keeps the house clean without becoming overwhelming..I have reminders on my phone

I also just check every day and see what needs attention, then I go do it. I do most on weekends when I'm off but some during the week, too. I also declutter as I go along. 💜💜💜 It's pretty dusty here in TX so I dust every day!😢

The way I've been functioning is trying to stick to bedroom on monday, bathroom on tuesday, kitchen on wednesday, living room on thursday, friday and saturday are free for all days and meal prep and rest sunday. Laundry, dishes and pet care get picked at daily. Combining cleaning, tidying, organizing, dusting, sanitizing, decluttering on an as needed basis in one space for that scheduled day. I do not want to think about the whole house in one day. 😅

"Side Tracked Home Executives" Pam Young and Peggy Jones, came out when I was a young mother, 40 plus years ago. This is very reminescent, but with a bit more customization perhaps. And it served me well. Three babies in 38 months, cloth diapers, wringer washer, wooden drying rack; organizing was the only way to come out on top.

I have a friend she cleans her house from top to bottom every day. I struggle and try to keep my house clean and tidy, but struggle with ME/CFS/Fibromyalgia. So as well as physical problems, some days I find it so hard think straight and work out even simple strategies. I need a clone of you.

@Anne9768, I hear you! I have frequent migraines (at least 15 per month) and CFS. My sister struggles with fibro, and we both find these chronic health conditions to be very challenging. I try my best, but I try to remember to give myself some grace too. I keep up with the basics ok...dishes, laundry, bathroom, etc. If it takes a day or more longer than I'd like to tackle bigger tasks, I've learned to be okay with that. I also have learned to divide times when I'm feeling a bit better between things I "must" do and things I "want" to do. We have to care for ourselves too. I hope your health improves!

I feel for you - I get nerve pain and back issues as well. I've found keeping a power spot/retreat space clean and tidy uplifting, when I'm having a rough day I can take it easy in the space (like read a book). Places like the bathroom I chunk and do whatever I can at the time. Knowing the shower takes the most effort I tend to do it separately to the washbasin, toilets etc.

I don't see how you can help, but thanks for offering. I moved into 1/2 the house in the middle of a 3-year illness and did not have any money to pay for help or buy shelves. I am FINALLY well, used my small inheritance to buy shelves and am finally working to find a place for everything. I did no cleaning while bed-ridden so I have some major deep cleaning to do. It feels good to be making progress in the right direction.
I like a 3"×5" card file system and have created daily, weekly, etc., tasks as well as one-time tasks that need to be done. My energy is still low, so I focus on priorities and urgent needs. I love the fable of the tortoise winning the race. I still need frequent breaks to rest, but seeing progress, however small or slow, feels GREAT.

You can at least do one percent!!! Boom. My house looks so much better. Miraculous actually. It's been 14 months. Happy walking. BTW!!! @loadz03 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Motivation is a feeling. Self discipline is what you need.

One percent rule is for you. It changed my life. If you take a man and change him 1% everyday, in 100 days you will have a brand new man. Do one PERCENT a day. And the room will be done in 100 days. Just do it. 2 mins a day.

I have a chronic illness so my motivation/energy differ on any set day.
I am trying my best to get into some good habits and your morning and afternoon videos helped me start to find my routine and I am going to time all the different tasks, so that I know if I can do a 5 min job or I can master the 20 minute job.
Thanks for also giving us the permission to do what suits us as individuals - I always feel like I have failed if I can't follow one of the more popular cleaning systems.

Whenever I feel overwhelmed I get up and do the first thing that comes to mind. It doesn’t matter that it’s not the most important thing (I can’t even discern what’s most important) but somehow the act of doing SOMETHING triggers a positive reaction in my brain. Also, you can never go wrong by doing the dishes to start.

Definitely find that do a little each day really helps maintain and keep on top of the mess. You have to take less time out of your life to clean and house looks tidy and presentable so it’s doesn’t matter if you get an unexpected visitor.

I feel like I'm my own road block when it comes to cleaning. Long ago I was a perfectionist and if I couldn't do it right and perfect, I didn't do it at all. I learned how to appreciate progress and not perfection so I do keep my kitchen clean frequently along with my bedroom. I dust my living room as needed and it could probably be dusted more often than I do it. I dislike doing my floors...I have all hard woods. They get really dusty. Sometimes I just vacuum them, I mostly just vacuum them and I rarely mop them with a cleaner. I should probably hire a cleaner but I have a difficult time justifying spending money on something I can easily do myself.
You know what I could really use your help with? How do you manage all the electronic cords? I have 2 areas in my living room with cords galore! Charging cords for phone, cordless drill, etc. Gaming cords for the console & the controllers, an ethernet cord which goes from living room all the way up to the 2nd floor in my primary bedroom. These attract so much dust and are also a horrendous eye sore. Can you help with this? :)

I recently saw a video where a young lady was helping a woman who was depressed clean her kitchen. The kitchen had been neglected for quite a while so it was really dirty. I was a little surprised that she used spray on oven cleaner on the stove top. It worked but all could think about is the damage it could have done. Has anyone ever tried using oven cleaner on the top of the stove? I wouldn’t do it. My stove is a glass top and is in good condition. The stove was a gas stove and that concerned me too. Just asking.😊

I find it hard to keep up with a routine now that I have a 9-month baby around. It used to be so easy: just do your whole kitchen in one go once a week, but now my time is scattered and this makes it hard for me to get started because I’m the all or nothing type. I get frustrated if I can only do half, but maybe I have to get used to it. Just worried I’ll forget what I have done when. 😅 (btw been following this channel since I was just a student living on my own for the very first time, learning how to keep my dorm room clean, how time flies!)

Stumbling block is definitely the oven. It's self cleaning but it wasn't cleaned between meals. Tried scraping grease off the glass but it didn't fully clean in the self-cleaning cycle. The rails are covered in baked on grease which unfortunately cannot be put into self clean mode because they would melt. Reducing the splatter as much as I can without breaking my wrists is the issue.

The house I used to live in, and still own (my friend still lives there) is a disaster (part of why I had to move out). I’m over there a few days a week, and end up “sprucing up” areas (dishes, counters, stove…). It’s impossible to do a deep (or, heck, weekly maintenance) clean because of all the crap on the floors and flat surfaces.
My apartment, on the other hand, is easy to clean because there are no obstacles in the way. I don’t let things build up.
Yes, I know there’s a big difference between living by yourself and living with others who either can’t (time or health constraints) or won’t (talk about stressful) help, or at least not contribute to the mess.

I did a semi deep clean today. I looked and thought oh today won't be so bad it's looking alright. BUT lately I've walked in and thought it smelled stale very unfresh, I have 2 big dogs and 3 cats and a husband and live in south Florida. Anyway, Melissa has said dirt smells so with that in mind today I did a fairly deep clean and boy did I bring some dirt out and every time I said to myself did was part of the smell, not to belittle myself but to remind me and drill into me that it loomed alright and thought I needed to buy scented this and scented that but all it was it Really was it all that dirt and dust that sneaks around. So with Tony Robbins in my ears for my soul and Me
Melissa in my head on how to go about it . I breathe different today.

I would recommend The Lazy Genius podcast. She has a lot of episodes about meal planning/ how to handle feeding yourself when that seens like more difficult. I just listened to her episode How to Pack Lunch for Work(from 2022) and it was really helpful to reexamine what i needed to do/adjust for myself. Its framed around lunch but it totally applies to dinners too.

Try using a planner. I have one and I can write what each day holds so if I want to clean on a certain day I will probably throw in a pre-made casserole that requires re-heating and then when my day has less tasks I will cook on that day. I have MS so planning really helps me feel somewhat productive and I can arrange tasks and meal planning so it suits me.

Question: How are you able to clean your house with young kids around? 😂 I have a 5 and 10 year old and any time I attempt to do anything they are interrupting me every 5 mins (it feels like) so 1 task that should only take 30mins takes me like 1.5 hrs

I loved the video right up until your comment “If you rent a place with old hardwood floors, what do you care about the floors?” Honestly, that attitude of lack of care for something because it doesn’t belong to you is abhorrent. If you’re living somewhere that belongs to someone else, that only increases your responsibility to take good care of it. I have cleaned out more crap from rental houses that were previously occupied by people with this attitude than you can imagine. Disgusting approach. Disgusting attitude. Not what I would’ve expected from you and you just lost a customer.
