    Honestly, this would have a lot more impact if Byleth killed Holst, especially in a blatantly retaliatory murder. Rodrigue's death hits hard because you not only lose one of your better units, but because said unit is a strong man killed by a cheap shot after battle, ironically exactly like how Jeralt dies in White Clouds. Judith losing a fight against someone way above her weight class just doesn't hit the same as “Fodlan's strongest warrior” dying to an ambush, not to mention the potential of having Hilda's reaction as well to her brother dying.

Really cement Edelgard having to realize just how horrible she was willing to be that she intended to let Monica be murdered to advance her goals, and now struggles with the idea that the same woman she would let die for her ambitions willingly gave her life out of a belief in Edelgard's cause.

    Judith dying feels like a climax of chapter 10. Instead of it just... falling off once Fleche's dead and you go "byleth pog"
    You kill Fleche who was trying to avenge Randolph. You can't say anything because you KNOW Claude's in the wrong. Catherine killing Randolph is just business.
    *Claude forcing it to happen is a dick move.*
    Jeralt then ends up dying too, because Shez's lust for revenge is too high. Byleth retaliates by killing Judith.
    It's nothing but loved ones dying for the sake of someone else's revenge.
    And Judith and Jeralt dying over Fleche's avengement of a man who should have never died is the perfect way to drive it home.

    • @gypsysprite4824

  • @ponspectorstillwedie4579
    @ponspectorstillwedie4579 ปีที่แล้ว +72

    I find it weird that this route tries to make Claude a more flawed character, having him sacrifice Randolph because he wants to limit Federation casualties, but then he immediately realizes he was in the wrong before seeing any consequences. It makes it feel pointless.
    I feel Claude should have stubbornly stuck to his guns that he made the right choice, and then once you get to Fleche's revenge map, have Judith die regardless of whether or not you recruit Byleth. That gives Claude a reason to reflect on his mistakes and to grow as a character more naturally. I know he did do some self introspection in this scene, but like I said he's already realized he was in the wrong at this point so it didn't change anything.
    Of course, you should still get a worse ending if you don't recruit Byleth. Someone else suggested that Holst should have died instead, and I think that would work. Something like Fleche kills Judith herself at some point during the battle no matter how you play, and if you don't recruit Byleth then s/he ends up killing Holst, so you end up with two deaths. Judith is never playable anyway, so her death wouldn't even be a mechanical punishment for the player.

    • @ponspectorstillwedie4579
      @ponspectorstillwedie4579 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Actually, after thinking about it more, I suppose having a significant character die isn't really necessary. Losing unnamed soldiers in a pointless and avoidable battle is consequence enough for Claude to realize he was wrong. My only real problem is that he had already resolved the issue before even starting this battle, and I feel it would have worked better if the resolution came after this chapter.

    • @tinyblutgang6540
      @tinyblutgang6540 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ponspectorstillwedie4579 I completely agree. It's a shallow development at best, and Claude being characteristically shrewd underneath his many layers definitely could've justified him sticking to his less than righteous scheming for a time. It lacked that timely realisation after losing precious lives and an invaluable ally when he's been doubting himself since the Federation kicked off.
      They made Claude look as if he'd been convincing himself that he wanted to rule, that he wanted the war, that he was on board with toppling down the central church because it was convenient as opposed to him _truly_ wanting or meaning to do those things. We know he's been keeping tabs on the Church in 3 Houses, but we didn't get any of that in 3 Hopes, so naturally it didn't hit as hard or add as much value to his story.
      It would've been a decent slap in the face for us to get humbled by not only Judith's death, but you know who else? Claude's mother.
      Balthus is under constant attack from his stepmother, and his house is but of minor nobility. Wouldn't anyone affiliated with the Riegan dukedom do worse if prodded? What about Almyran nobility? We have Balthus always fearing for his mother whereas Tiana is ever-safe, unmentioned, out of harm's way in Almyra. . after her Riegan son fells one of the Almyran princes in battle? That's not realistic in my view.
      There seems to be no end to what Claude can do with little to no consequences whatsoever from his Almyran family. If they're as large as all that with several princes in play and the King himself-- would they not have something to say about Claude's affairs? Shahid was a joke, so it couldn't have hurt to put forward somebody else to represent Almyra on a grander scale after what happened to a member of the royal family. If they wouldn't have Fleche send envoys to Almyra for the purpose of assassinating his mother out of spite, they could've at least given us a half-decent face-off between both sides of his family.
      Now, me personally, I would've gone with the assassination attempt. Tit for tat. The Empire had enough chess pieces in the board to unearth information about Claude should they ever need to, not to mention that TWSITD had a strong presence in Leicester just as well as in Faerghus. Fleche clearly meant to use everything and everyone at her disposal. It'd have stung a lot more for her to basically tell Claude "you took from me with deceit, I take from you likewise" with such an action. She's cunning and spiteful enough to do worse as shown in 3 Houses, so it's a missed opportunity.
      When Claude gave the speech on why Leicester shouldn't put its faith in the Empire or break its back for Faerghus, our boy sounded downright mean, in a good way. You could hear the bark in his bite. You could feel the repressed bitterness he held towards Fodlan. It reminded me of the remarkably unpleasant experiences Claude had as little kid, and that made me think of every other commoner or outsider unlucky enough to be born into bad circumstances, which in turn made me sympathise with Claude's sentiment and overlook the means. I disagree with punishing people for the actions of their ancestors, especially when you consider that Lambert worked tirelessly to make drastic changes, and that later Dimitri took up the mantle, but even so I could understand Claude's one-track mind in that particular moment out of emotion.
      Claude's always taking risks, but this was the first time that one of his military decisions came about without careful deliberation plus everyone else's preemptive input. It had catastrophic consequences on top of that, and boy I _loved_ it. I wanted to see what they were going to do, and what sort of heavy drawback we'd get from it. They barely did anything, and having this inner conflict somewhat resolved when it hadn't even been fleshed out properly really irked me.
      Judith's death did upset me however Rodrigue's certainly upset me more, and I think we can all agree on that. Both mechanically and emotionally speaking, it just wasn't the move.

      Didn't Claude order some of his men to fetch Shez? I think that took priority over engaging a catalyst with unknown powers, and like you said Judith isn't a fool. Had she been searching for Shez and attacked out of the blue, the scene would've actually hurt.
      Shez could've gotten back on their own after beating Jeralt only to find that Judith had already set out to look for them, and that Byleth was still at large. Fade to Shez running past the trail of corpses, fearing the worst and having it confirmed as Judith lay there dead. No parting words for Shez to hear either, those should've been left to the wind and for the player alone to listen, knowing that Shez was never going to make it in time.

    I hate how Azure Gleam is the only route where not recruiting Byleth costs a playable unit, and hate the Boar and several of his classmates.
    The thing is both houses have non-classmate units that could have made the prefect narrative sense to die and have a bigger impact. I think GW should of had Holst die here, and SB should of had Jeritza die.
