You’ll love KPop. There’s a great focus on melody and their production draws inspiration from different genres and even uses Western producers. If you focus strictly on musicality you’ll love it. I’m not a native Korean speaker either but I can appreciate the music for how it’s structured and you seem to be on the same wavelength. So enjoy!

    0:46 MV = Music Video
2:28 TWICE is the best-selling K-pop girl group. Their album sales exceeded 10 million copies (counting in Korea and Japan alone). They are the most awarded too. Their producer, JYP, is one of, if not, the most accomplished K-pop singer-songwriter/record-producer. He wrote and composed this song. He also happens to be the founder (and former CEO) of the company.
4:34 You might want to see the subtitles. I think it’ll help you see how the words flow with the music. (Particularly with the rap part in this video.) They usually mix English words and phrases in their songs. Also, I think people won’t mind you replaying parts of the song to read the translation, etc.
12:40 You’re in for a treat! TWICE’s discography is vast. They have hits after hits after hits. They even sound different each time but there’s always that TWICE feel to it. Their b-sides are even awesome.
Anyway, nice reaction! Enjoy the journey. Mahalo 💕

    - I don't even know if the bossa nova has been used for a K-Pop single but there were latin songs. That's not rare to find this structure and amount of chords changing in K-Pop but the quality is certainly there with JYP, an experimented composer and creator of the company. TWICE is one of the biggest female groups in the K-Pop history and they also have consistent albums since a while.
    - TWICE are versatile artists but regarding the production, they're only used to write their lyrics... for now.
    - Let me know if you would be interested by something else. Maybe their previous single 'I can't stop me' (synthwave) and one of the 2 last albums. This single is part of 'Taste of love' and 'ICSM' from 'Eyes wide open'

Thank you for taking time to review and dissect the song, and the song was produced, written, and composed by the same person, the founder of their company JYP Entertainment - Jinyoung "Asiansoul" Park, credits goes to him and TWICE who sang and performed the song beautifully with the dance choreo.

As an artist, I love how they continue to try new things, which made them the 3rd gen group with the most growth musically speaking imo. the thing with kpop is you’ll never know what’s coming. kpop producers would usually go over the top and would rely more on complexity, weird song structures, sudden rhythmic changes, etc rather than for a track to be predictable for the mainstream’s liking. there are a vast variety of genres that differ to one’s own taste. alcohol-free is a sudden switch of sound (bossa nova) which is very new for twice, as they’re known for their upbeat and energetic title tracks; it really takes on that bold move for them to release such a calm song like this that puts them out of their box and would lay out their versatility in their discography a little further. alcohol-free is just the tip of the iceberg, with that said, i really hope that you could dive in to more of kpop! it is a fun experience as a casual listener.
and to add, twice were known for their consecutive cutesy concept as it caters the asian market, but as they grow throughout the years, they gradually are switching onto their mature side which is the twice we know today. btw thanks for reacting! we really love the genuine reactors like you out there. keep it up 👍

Quick back story = The "JYP whisper" at the beginning is for JYP the artist/composer/producer/song writer/ and owner of the label. He has written over 55 #1 hits (in South Korea) many of which have won "song of the year & album of the year & artist of the year". I only mention this because as a composer, you might get a lot of negative comments about the man. For some reason internet trolls have taken to hating on the guy for no reason. People can say whatever they want about him, but he is a brilliant song writer. He has written songs in many genres, one of his own recent releases has a "swing" vibe, and another has a "disco" vibe.
Interesting fact... the man loves American music. He even named all the studio rooms and practice rooms in the label's building after American artists... Madonna, Michel Jackson, Bobby Brown, etc...

@@afia7425 It just proves that (some) people just believe and follow whatever they read on the internet. For example = Dahyun and Chaeyoung did a cover of JYP & Rain's "Switch To Me". Kpop fans praise their cover, but don't even realize that it's actually a JYP song that they are praising. 😂

    • @robertlawrence2609

Switch to Me is actually Rain's song, JYP is the guest vocal on it. It wasn't released under "JYP Official", but under Rain. Good song either way. The thing I like best about DubChaeng's version is that it's basically a parody making fun of the fact that Rain and JYP (especially) are old.

    • @robertlawrence2609
      @robertlawrence2609 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Migs True, but JYP has written tons of songs for other artists. By that logic, any time anyone praises most of Twice's, Wonder girls', or Miss A's songs, they're actually praising JYP. Where is the line supposed to be drawn?

This sort of song is probably sort of an anomaly in the greater scheme of kpop, but the writer/composer/producer JYP (Jin Young Park) is a little more eclectic in his elements than many of the other kpop producers, who tend to have a more electronic or hip hop bent. But the mastering at JYP (the company not the man) is almost always well done. Edit: punctuation.

K-Pop is really an amazingly vast genre. There's a reason why my playlist exploded from about 200 songs to almost 2,000 songs within a year of getting into Kpop. Welcome to the rabbit hole!
You've already received a lot of suggestions but if I may, I'll also give you my top 10 favourite groups:
10: *Twice.* The one you've heard here. Started off very cutesy but have recently become more mature. My favourite song is Love Foolish, a b-side from their 2019 EP Feel Special. It's vastly different from Alcohol-Free but still amazing, and also co-written by Momo, who's one of the members.
9: *Stray Kids.* A boy group from the same company, JYP. Completely self-producing, more hip hop oriented. They just won Kingdom, a big boy group competition show. Favourite song is Side Effects, the title track from their 2019 EP Clé: Yellow Wood. That one draws strong influences from Psytrance which is not something you get a lot of in Kpop.
8: *Everglow.* A girl group with a very strong girl crush concept. Favourite song is La Di Da, the title track on the 2020 EP -77.82x-78.29. La Di Da is not just my favourite Everglow song, it is the absolute best Kpop song I've ever heard. A straight up 80s synthwave banger.
7: *Red Velvet.* One of the most popular girl groups in Korea. They have two sides to them. The red side is more upbeat, poppy and summery and the velvet side is focused on RnB and some ballads. Favourite song is Bad Boy, the title track on their 2018 album The Perfect Red Velvet. An RnB track that I didn't like that much at first but really grew on me over time.
6: *NCT.* This might be cheating because NCT is actually comprised of 3 fixed smaller groups (NCT 127, NCT Dream and WayV) and one rotational group which chooses different members each time depending on the song (NCT U). All together, they currently have 23 members. Favourite song right now is 90s Love by NCT U, from the 2020 album Resonance, Pt. 2. As the name implies, it's a 90s inspired hip hop track.
5: *Oneus.* Another very diverse boy group. They went from the ultra agressive No Diggity in January straight to the groovy, Michael Jackson inspired Black Mirror in May. My favourite song, though, is A Song Written Easily, from the 2020 single In Its Time. A very strong EDM track that's still quite emotional.
4: *Mamamoo.* THE. BEST. VOCALISTS. IN. KOREA. PERIODT. Their live performances sound better than the studio recordings, it's insane. They started out in 2014 with very jazzy and swingy music, similar to stuff from the 30s. As a huge fan of Electroswing, I love that music so much. They have branched out into other genres since then and my favourite song is Egotistic from the 2018 EP Red Moon. Also a Latin inspired song with god-tier vocals. It would be an absolute dream come true to attend one of their concerts.
3: *Ateez.* My favourite boy group. I can't even really describe their style, you just have to hear it for yourself. Quite powerful, but also sometimes very emotional stuff. My favourite song is Take Me Home, a b-side from their most recent 2021 EP Zero: Fever Part.2. It's quite similar to Everglow's La Di Da, in the sense that it's also an 80s synthwave banger with a bit of a surprise at the end of the song. I won't spoil it, you'll just have to hear it yourself. Take Me Home is easily my favorite boy group song and a very close second favourite for Kpop overall.
2: *Loona.* A group with quite an interesting pre-debut periodt, where, starting in late 2016, they revealed each of the 12 members one at a time with her own single and MV. Along the way, they formed 3 sub-units and in 2018, they finally debuted as a whole group. Their discography is extremely diverse, including Jazz, Ballads, Classical, RnB, EDM, Hip Hop, various kinds of Pop, etc. Apparently, their upcoming comeback will incorporate elements from Bollywood? And then there's my favourite song, Why Not, the title track on the 2020 EP [12:00]. I don't even know what genre that is supposed to be. One of the weirdest songs I've heard and I absolutely love it!
1: *Dreamcatcher.* Not just my favourite Kpop group, but my favourite band overall. I watched their online concert in March and can safely say, if that had been an in-person concert, it would've been the best concert I've ever attended, hands down. All of their title tracks have a rock/metal-heavy sound but they explore many different genres on the b-sides. My favourite song is Black or White, a b-side on their 2020 album Dystopia: The Tree of Language. Similar to Oneus' Black Mirror, it's one big groovy Michael Jackson hommage. Even the choreography is very much inspired by him.
Sorry this got so long but I'm just very passionate about these groups!

I can't wait to see you see more TWICE and music from South Korea. TWICE is my favorite group, but there is so much good music coming out of SK that I know you will love if you enjoyed this.

As someone who grew up listening Latin music, salsa, merengue, bachata it's so cool having a song like this coming from an industry like kpop. There's so much ear candy, layers, textures that feel so familiar yet new which is what I love. Latin style songs in kpop more often than not are either a hit or a miss but this is THE highlight among them

    Hey there, Decomposer!
    Another Oldmann here!
As a young’un in Kpop, I think you would also appreciate the awesome arrangements of “Red Velvet.”
Such as “Dumb dumb” (big horn section feature), “Russian Roulette” (nice harmonies), and “Bad Boy” (awesome bad-girl lounge track)
You’d also like everything by the rock-Kpop girls Dreamcatcher. (Just start anywhere, or with “Boca”)
    Rock on!

Of the music I listen to Kpop has some of the most interesting instrumental tracks I've ever heard. The producers of these songs do a really good job of making the music engaging and it always has a lot of depth. I highly suggest listening to artists like ITZY, BTS, and Sunmi. Their music never fails to amaze me

Twice is known to release music that is unexpected. You never know what type of genre they are going to sing next. That’s why they’re so famous. They can go from cute, to edgy and pop to bossa nova. One of the best discographies in Kpop. No song is alike.

I didn’t even know you had this channel sir, I’ve followed the other for awhile, so that’s my fault. These girls are really talented and have a great team behind them, putting arrangements together that just make their voices shine. Their latest album is a far cry from this type of sound, but they go into ballads, dance sounds, retro vibes, all kinds of stuff. Even some darker songs can be found here and there. I’ve only VERY recently taken a dive into their library, but I’ve loved every moment of the journey :) thank you for reacting to this!

Great to see more people see how great Kpop is!
Small explanation about the Kpop scene: Kpop is an umbrella term for Popular Korean Music which includes Khiphop, Krnb, idol music(which is what Twice is) and more.
Idol music is characterized by being mostly groups, not restricted to one definitive style of music(I've seen groups go from heavy EDM drops, to fun reggaeton vibes then switch to a soft ballad, these groups be wild with their genre choices), and often include choreography in their performances.
    Idol music recommendations:
B.A.P "Warrior", an older sing from 2012 that was a big hit in the community when it came out.
BTOB "I'll Be Your Man(Pray)", an underrated gem from a group known for their incredible vocals and with rap skills to match.
Red Velvet "Zimzalabim", a strange song that was not well received for how strange it was as a song before being accepted as one of the iconic songs of its year.
If you're interested in the Krnb and Khiphop scene, I'd be glad to drop suggestions, but I'll keep it at idol music for now! Please enjoy!

Obsessed with this song, and I feel even more justified now! Hahaha. It's so nice to hear an actual composer comment on the song. This is def one of my favorite Twice songs.
If you're into exploring more Kpop, "Next Level" by Aespa is one helluva ride. Many people say it's "3 or 4 songs in 1." They definitely do some crazy shit in it, including a complete key change (I believe) and time signature and tempo change! Would love to hear your reaction to it!

Fascinating to find this! I’ve been listening to your other channel for months… as a metal fan… but I’m also a Twice fan so great to see you react to them.
You mentioned the quality of the voice… actually Twice always have every one of the 9 members sing in each song - and there are TH-camrs dedicated to working out a ‘line distribution’ showing the % breakdown. Most KPop groups are carefully selected to mix vocal Timbres… and it’s quite easy for a fan to differentiate between them all (I usually manage it!).
If you wanted to try some more KPop, the group ‘Red Velvet’ has some interesting compositions. I’d recommend ‘Peek-a-boo’ or ‘Rookie’.

TWICE has A LOT of good song, excellent composition and the way they sing always bring something Extra! I really really love Taste Of Love but its a "summer song", and in kpop summer song are more "classic" composition, summer songs are light, fun and bright.
So, I think, as a composer, you would have more interest with song like, I Cant Stop Me, Fancy, Cheer Up, SIGNAL (this is a VERY interessing composition by JYP), Like Ooh Ah... Those songs are more "kpopish"!

2:47 unfortunately, this sound and composition are rare in kpop, Twice happened to be one of few artists, or group, that are experimental and have the guts to try something different.
Fyi, edm based music or 'noise' music still dominate the kpop landscape.
