Bought my Mk 3.5 Titanium 1.5 tdci 120 in June 2021 with 71k miles on the clock. I have covered 16k miles in the car to Sept 2022. Mechanically and electrics wise there have been no issues with the car except that the air con system needed a new condenser unit and to be regassed - total cost of this repair was €400. Fuel economy has been really strong with the car averaging 57mpg. The car looks sporty, especially from the side and front. Refinement levels, especially tyre and road noise are much improved over the mk 2.5 model, which I owned previously. Gearbox is lovely to use and with cruise control, SYNC 3 and dual zone climate control, the car has all the tech I need. There is some very clever storage options in the centre console. Finally, the car is very refined when just cruising, but if you find a twisty back road, and you decide to have a little fun, the car comes alive and puts a smile on my face, by the way it corners and responds.
On the downside, the the driver seat angle on the Titanium spec is a little steeper than the mk 2.5 and the mk 3.5 Zetec seats which leads to moderate back ache/bum ache on longer trips (i.e. trips of say more than 1 hour…in future, a driver seat with “tilt” functionality is advised if there are concerns about the angle of decline on the driver’s seat…Also, I am 6ft 2 in height, so it maybe that shorter drivers will not experience the same issue - I use a wedge cushion which has improved the issue a lot - just wondering does anyone have any other suggestions to make the driver's seat more comfortable on long runs - much appreciated

I really like the styling! Very aggressive and sporty hot hatch! Recarro seats look so nice! I drive a '15 Volvo V60 R-Design T6 3.0, and I am very impressed with this car, especially considering the reasonable price. I don't know anything about the reliability of the current Focus, but I would guess it is better than the GTI. I think Ford's design team deserves a lot of credit for the nice job on most of their current products.

a friend has not long taken ownership of a diesel ST sportwagon and loves it. the engine sound from the inside is quite similar to the petrol because of the synthesized sound through the speakers. he does an obscene amount of km's each year, hence the engine choice. he's getting 4.7 litres economy plus still has the option of a lot of fun when driving spirited. thanks for the review :)

I'm getting this car in the ST3 and I cannot wait. Nothing seems to compare in trim and 'bang for buck'. The suspension concerns people have are overrated. I have driven this and been a passenger in the front and back. I did actual vibration tests on it. Ridiculously smooth compared to other 'comfortable' cars. Just don't drive over speed bumps at 40mph! 😬🚗

I have the Diesel ST Focus, and i have to say i am very pleased with it, i also have the ST Fiesta, well the ST Focus is so smooth on the road and it has the 19" wheels and is much better on the road than the Fiesta ST.. My son has the Petrol ST Focus, and i have to say the petrol version is much better fun. The ST Focus both petrol and diesel are very good at long distance trips They are very good cars, and nothing ever goes wrong with them. plus nothing on the road out there will beat them in the same class.

I drive the old 2,5T Focus ST tuned to 300hp. Quicker than a standard RS, it's completely mad and i love it.
I like the mk3 ST too, even the TDCi wich i just test drove. It has a lot more torque steer than the mk2 though, but i don't mind, i found it quite funny. And you can actually get rid of a lot of the torque steer by upgrading the engine mounts, Mountune make upgraded ones for instance.

the seat backs do indeed fold flat, if you first flip the seats forwards. Just grab between the seat and the lean and lift.

I really like the exterior of this model, but I find the space inside is quite too small and the interior level is still not there.
The thing that annoys me most is the big chunky middle infotainment console. While sitting on the driver seat, I find out that my left knee (in your case is right knee) always hits the edge of the console. It is kinda hard to spread your legs out wide when you have nothing to do sitting in the traffic jam.
Anyway, great review as usual ;)

I found Ford's 3 note chime to be annoying at first, but some of the newer US market Fords aren't so bad. It's the same 3 notes, but it's played a little softer and more lagato. I don't know if you agree, but I find it more pleasing to listen to.

    Hello Thomas,
    Regards from Munich :).
Start and Stop its always a good option if you can enable/disable. Not only for the fuel but most importantly, Co2 emissions.
And by the way if the animal skin is used from animals that we eat that's not a problem, it's a good use, would be disrespectful to throw it away. But of course kill to get only the skin is horrible.
Cheers, congrats for the always good review's.

We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter.
At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself.
In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first.
Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production:
      th-cam.com/video/LNSUzZXzpdc/w-d-xo.html
List of practical reasons against animal skin seats:
      1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it)
      2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling
      3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating
      4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
      5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa
      6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review th-cam.com/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/w-d-xo.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla
      7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather)
      To the environmental reasons:
      1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below)
      2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf
      3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage.
      4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body.
      5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy.
      6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production”
      1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small.
      2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette):
      Leather 17 kg CO2/m²
      PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m²
Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m²
Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m²
So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half!
      3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future.
      More special video episodes:
      1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: th-cam.com/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/w-d-xo.html
      2. And another one right here: th-cam.com/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/w-d-xo.html
      3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: th-cam.com/video/JipYvuDsI6s/w-d-xo.html
      timecode starting 27:46
      4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: th-cam.com/video/OgHs239bAnE/w-d-xo.html
      5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway.
      Manufacturers reactions:
We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now.
So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change!
Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

The solution to that fwd wheel spin is buying the RS version of this car which comes with awd. Coincidentally it also comes with a boatload of more hp too.
I agree with you on the design. It's very good looking car. I too wonder about that dash though. I sat in the passenger seat and the sharp end of that dash meets my knees. Meh.

Hello! It is a nice car but I would also go for the Golf. I didn't like too much the Alfa Giulieta but the Ford is somewhere in the middle.
Regarding the design, I like more the non-facelift version. I think the new Mondeo really resembles Aston Martin design.
You said you would never buy a yellow car. What about a Lamborghini Diablo/Murcielago/Galardo? I think Lambo looks good in yellow, the rest of the cars look like taxies. This blue collor is the best for Ford Focus.
The feature that I liked most is the door protection rubber which I haven't seen at other cars, very ellegant solution.
At the begining of the video, you mentioned something about Ken Block so I thought this Focus will be all wheel driven but at the end you said it is front wheel driven. I am confused now.

+Dragos Teodor Bran thanks for the feedback! Well it is the car that does get your closest to Ken Block if you spend 'normal' money. There soon will be the new RS version of course that comes even closer, and that one has AWD then. But the RS is also more expensive than the ST.

    Hey - where's our German lesson??? 🇩🇪
Best looking focus ST agreed. Still, I don't like so much the interior dash angular styling on the Ford models.
You're correct - the door ajar jingle sounds awful. Seems to be an American car sound that I experienced on many rentals while working in the U.S.
BMW has the best chime I think!
The door edge protection is brilliant. It should be mandatory on all other people's cars 😝 nicely executed Ford.
Question for you Thomas: I noticed the oil filler cap on the engine says Castrol. Same as my bimmer oil filler cap.
BMW has recently switched to Shell for their synthetic motor oil this year. Why do the car companies bother to stamp Castrol, for instance, on a cap?? Any ideas?? I know you will find the answer.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. As a start, please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html
In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which body part you would murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car.
In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all just of common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

If I read between the lines, the criticism is that it is too harsh, too powerful and not spacious enough for normal family use. The question is, why buy it? What else is there to buy in the sporty section of the market (not being hot hatches) for the money? I know one thing. I am too old for this car, haha.

+Ronald de Rooij You got the criticism points yes, actually it was not really between the lines :) Still, it is a very fun car and does offer a good price performance ratio, even some cheaper than the Golf GTI which is the main competitor imho. Along side Seat Leon Cupra.

+Autogefühl But the question must be asked, is the extra money for the GTI worth it? I think so.
As a side note, SYNC 3 should be out soon. So much better than the unit you tested.

+Autogefühl Thanks, but in my comment I wondered what else you could buy for the money NOT being hot hatches. In the Netherlands you could buy for the same money as for the Focus ST for example:Citroën C5 Tourer, Ford Mondeo Wagon, Honda Accord Tourer, BMW 4 series, Jaguar XE, Kia Optima, Lexus CT, Mercedes-Benz A, B, C, CLA, GLA class, Mitsubishi Outlander, Opel Insignia (Tourer), Peugeot 308, 3008 and 508, Renault Grand Scenic, Skoda Superb, Toyota Avensis, VW Passat, Tiguan, Volvo V40, V60 van V70. I mean: what is speed and "sportyness" worth? You get limited usability, limited comfort, higher fuel consumption (and many speeding tickets) when, for the same money, you can buy comfort, economy, space and luxury? As said, I am too old for "sporty cars".

Hi Thomas. I would much rather have the golf GTI. The golf is a much better car, better build quality better refinement and also the VW is a much nicer design. I think the Ford Focus is ok, but it looks too cheap.

+MegaADZZY VW nicer design? I strongly disagree... The Golf is a great car but the design is one of the most boring I've ever seen. The Focus design (facelift) looks gorgeous.
