2020 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 G Review in Malaysia, Comfort Over Everything Else! | WapCar

  • The 2020 Toyota Corolla Altis has a tough time convincing buyers to look away from the 2020 Honda Civic and Mazda 3 Sedan.
It uses the same 1.8-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine carried over from before and the cabin lacks wow factor . Especially when compared to segment rivals.
However, the Corolla Altis is not targeted at the keen drivers. Instead, it appeals to those looking for a comfort-oriented family sedan that is reliable, packed with safety features (Toyota Safety Sense), and comes with all the feel-good features you'd want in a car.
With the updated 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system by Clarion that now supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Corolla Altis checks all the right boxes for a family sedan.

The drive sounds a lot like the 1st generation Nissan Sylphy 2.0 (2008) which I owned. Quiet, refined, comfort tuned suspension etc. However, I read few comments that this Corolla is not too quiet when the speed gets up to 110 km/h and it gets noisier above this speed mainly from the roads and traffic. The Nissan Sylphy is quiet up to 170 km/h. Too bad Toyota didn't pay too much on NVH especially noise levels as it used to be a trademark for Toyota vehicles. Perhaps the Camry is the only vehicle which is quiet up to 200 km/h but not this Corolla which is unfortunate.

The touch screen infotainment unit really looks like an after market installation and sticking out awkwardly. Steering wheel design can be better. Exterior design is better now compared to their past model. Then again, nobody buys Toyota for exciting look, driving dynamic, etc. Toyota is for those who just want to get from point A to B, reliability, comfort which suits most consumers.

I think it is a pretty fair review. Personally I think the main minus point is the cramped appearance of the cabin and too small cabin stowage.
I had a look at one and didn't feel compelled that it is a big enough improvement to warrant a replacement for my trusty Corolla ZZE132. Also felt like it was too posh (not a bad thing - just perception).
As for the cabin insulation levels - I think I can accept some not too excessive outside noise. There have been occasions I could only tell that there was a bike in my blind spot because I heard the sound of its engine.

Civic vs altis is always the tough choice for c-segment buyers. If the altis was a 2.0 with prices below 140k, am sure it will sell well.
Altis is more comfortable compared to the civic but less powerful. Does the car still handle well at speeds in excess of 140 to 160?

    • @WapCar

The one that is cheapskate is u since not only u dont want to pay extra $$ for something that may last longer than u but the fact that u are being stupid for buying something else will break down and cost u even more $$$
