With the price of silver and what he paid he should of gone back in to the coin shop. I'm surprised to hear a fake bar coming out of a coin shop. They always test stuff before they buy it usually. Makes me wonder about this coin shop. Feel bad for the guy. I'd be super p****d!

A couple weeks ago, I had a couple silver rounds that I bought from my LCS that I had some doubts about. I do not have a Sigma machine, but the rounds came up heavy (one was 0.7 g over, one was nearly 0.9 g over). I went back and expressed my concerns. They told me that they were X-ray certified by their wholesaler before they got them, but they checked them again while I was watching. They tested good, just heavy. They told me that if I was still concerned, they would switch them for other rounds. That is the kind of service that keeps my custom with their shop.

Every LCS should have one of those analyzers sitting on their counter for both the owner and buyers to use. It might also deter any sellers of knowingly passing fake silver to the LCS. They'd see it and think they could get caught. I'd bet a lot of this fake silver comes from Ebay-type venues (faceless, anonymous entities).

If they don’t have analyzer then we can bring out own if they allow us to used our analyzers to test it if not walk away.

Speg, a couple of days ago I finally received my Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier that I ordered two months ago (they have a backlog of orders). Man, I love this device! Thank you for the heads up. I got the same one you show in this video. Over the past two days, I have tested every piece of silver I own, with the exception of a big bag of junk silver. I've only found two "questionable" pieces, so far. One was a 1oz silver round that was given to me by my employer, back in 2008. It was a special round made for the company, and even has the company name on one side, and an eagle and ".999 fine silver one ounce trade unit" on the other. When I set the Sigma unit to 99.9 Pure silver, the reading is off the scale, to the right (right arrow indicated). The round also slides noticeably faster down my magnet ramp than a silver eagle. Completely fake. Not silver at all. My company got hoodooed, lol.
The second "questionable" result is an old Englehard 10 oz silver bar that I bought a couple of years ago from either APMEX or JM (I forget). This is a "vintage" bar, from probably the 1960s or 70s, and is thicker, but with smaller length and width dimensions, than most modern 10 oz silver bars. It is stamped .999 fine silver, but when I place it on the Sigma detector, the bar is just outside the bracket, to the right. When I set the Sigma to Sterling Silver or 90% silver, the bar reads inside the bracket. I'm guessing the purity of this bar, being vintage, may not be quite up to modern standards, but it is still at least 90% silver, probably in the 95% range. Quite interesting.

The specific gravity test is a very strong proof for PM authenticity. I didn’t want to part with hundreds of dollars for a store-bought model so I researched, designed and built an apparatus to conduct specific gravity tests of 1 ozt. rounds. The test is super sensitive and must be rigorously carried out in order to derive accurate results. Excluding the electronic scale, construction materials amounted to less than US $20. Don’t forget the substantial value of the specific gravity test.

I sent an email, and the next day had two replacement quarters sent my way, no questions asked.

Just push it into an ice cube, if it instantly cuts it in half it’s silver. Hard to fake that sort of thermal conductivity unless it is solid copper and there’s a 10% difference in density between the two so you would spot that by eye.

He used to show us that by balancing the coin on the tip of your finger you could tap it with another coin on the edge and you could hear the distant sound the higher content silver coins made. Thought that was interesting to share as I'm sure the pure silver bars you get would do the same thing.

In addition, you can buy testing kit from ebay that costs about $15. The challenge was for me is: how to use the acids. But hey, everything on TH-cam for you to learn, and it saved me money by not buying a fake items. Also, practice more than few times will help to identify plated, coated gold and silver. One more thing is a small, round file that can scratch surface of an object to see what under and put some acid in it.

Great video; thanks for sharing. But just FYI, unless you're considering 3 dimensions, the size of the bar, height & width, don't tell you a thing. All that matters is weight and volume, from which you get density. So that the fake bar varies in size from a bar from another supplier, APMex in your case, doesn't tell anything.

Looks to me like the days of "a buck (or 69 cents) over spot" may be gone forever on generic forms. But I can tell you that there is no way in the known universe I would be active in the physical metals market without a Sigma machine. Yeah, it's a $700+ machine, but how many fake gold Eagles would you have to buy to pay for it? The fakes have only gotten better, better, better over time; in silver dollars they are ghastly good. And nobody is ever prosecuted for counterfeiting even Silver Eagles, so it's just open season on fraud.

I bought on eBay from what seemed to be a reputable seller with good reviews. I got two peace dollars one in a cardboard holder the other in an air tight. The carboard one real, the air tight looked small and I had doubts instantly as soon as I felt it I knewit was fake. The ping test was off, I weighed it and immediately contacted the seller just to inform them and present pictures of it on the scale and next to the first which was obviously a larger coin. I didn't accuse the seller and gave him the benefit. He did refund me for it but asked for it back so I cut into it with a dremel so he couldn't sell it again. I really did not want to send it back in fear someone would not notice it was a fake but I insured that but cutting it and making the brass visible

@@marcelojuarez3344 Morgan dollars and peace dollars yeah, and those have a high premiums anyways. Halves, quarters and dimes? I've never heard or any faked for their silver content. a few for super rare numismatic value maybe but are people really faking them for their silver content? I can't find anyone who's ever posted they got a fake. please share if you have it would be much appreciated!

@@marcelojuarez3344 Actually never mind. I looked more into it and wow yeah those can be faked too. More rare but I guess I got the idea no one was faking them from some youtube videos and coin shops that talked about how they never get fakes. I'm gonna magnet and ping test my bags here in a minute. thanks for bringing this to my attention.
They even fake mercury dimes. I found a chinese website selling them too. funny thing is they're selling them for more than what a silver dime is worth. so why are people buying fakes when the real ones are less?

5:00 You should have showed that your other one ounce bars lined up together, all with the same dimensions, if that is what you are trying to show. I don't see a problem, as the suspect bar has more bulk on the corners, and the good bar has more bulk on the sides.
5:15 See what I mean? Even your known good bars have different dimensions.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I asked my lcs how do they know it’s real and they said they just know.🧐 and one day I went in to sell and they didn’t even test it.
