Enslaved still has blackmetal roots which you can clearly hear. They've always had their own sound, style and atmosphere, very unique. And in the end: fuck the genres! Good bands are good no matter what genre.
human beings made up genres, labels. the feeling of Black Metal isn't a genre, it's a spirit/All spirit/thee Spirit. *Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth came up with the genre of Black Metal but he was lead by the Spirit. like others, he just put it together properly.
+Välkommen till Pulvercity Enslaved never sought to be a mere 'black metal' band, they're influenced heavily by Black Metal, mostly due to their origin, but they've always avoided classifying themselves as anything but Extreme Metal, which has allowed them to remain unique in their sound. It's a large group of their fans that keep insisting on trying to 'stay kvlt' and attach the Black Metal label on them. But yes, as you mentioned, this is much better than plain black metal. I was reading an interview with Ivar a few months back and when asked about the Black Metal origins, he kind of brushed it aside but mentioned that he took the suggestions from Euronymous about avoiding power chords and using full chords, diminished minors, and the picking nuances of fast 16th note picking varying the strings hit, etc but he stressed that they never subscribed to any of the political or religious rhetoric that was going on at the time, they were just kids wanting to make extreme music; with Grutle taking it a step further by singing only in Icelandic and Norwegian and using the Viking Tales/Epics as the lyrical subjects... ( Sorry I didn't intend on commenting this much, but I just typed out the mindflow as it came ).
Everytime I talk about Enslaved and say I love it, there's a guy telling me, : "you should listen to Opeth, it's like Enslaved, but better." No, Enslaved are the kings of Prog Extreme Metal and the seccossors of Bathory in Viking Metal
As I heard Opeth first, I can't help but make the comparison. Opeth had some great albums. My Arms, Your Hearse; Blackwater Park; Ghost Reveries.. all amazing albums.
Buying this album in Huntington WV mall. Leaving...slamming this in the CD player...thunderstorm just passed...steamy metallic smelling air...listening to this album all the way back to my house miles and miles away....such a poignant memory of times past.
Do you not find raw recording techniques to your taste, or are you saying that they are objectively bad? Take Ulver's 'Nattens Madrigal', would you say that it would be a better album if all of the instruments could be heard clearly? I would most certainly disagree if so.
It's esoteric symbolism, the red zone turning on in the darkness in the beginning symbolizes the divine principle of Creation, the hanging man is the cosmic man that needs to pass through initiation (Odhinn hanging on the World-tree) in order to be reborn and join the divine principle at the centre of the circle (the universe), he is white (divine principle perfect in itself), while the others at the edge of the circle are red (the divine principle in relation with the cosmic manifestation).
MrThrashmetal13 ...to be honest i wasnt too interested in 1st half of the song but you giving the time ..i went now the whole song is a daily thing...you need the first 6 minutes to get rest tyvm man
+jackie thompson - I had watched the band performing live in 2010. I watched Enslaved live in 2010 and they did play this song. I didnt pay much attention to it. I visited the Jorvik Viking Centre and after tht listened to this. Still one of my daily songs after months!
I had bought Ritiir and Vertebrae and was thoroughly surprised at how well the music portrayed itself...after making an enslaved playlist on pandora and hearing their other albums I can say for myself that Enslaved has done something for me that not many other bands have
I think this video is an excellent fit for the song. It makes sense that a progressive band like Enslaved choose a video that is a departure from the traditional black metal imagery (i.e. snow, forests, etc.). And cheers to Enslaved for going against the grain and continuing to challenge their listeners to follow them on a most excellent journey.
I totally agree, I love black metal but Enslaved has stopped playing black metal a long time ago! They have their very own style, like Opeth, and this is awesome.
Can't you really stop labelling everything?! "It is black metal, it isn't black metal"... Who cares?! I bet even the guys in Enslaved don't care. This is MUSIC, fantastic music, from one of the best metal bands out there. Stop arguing and just enjoy this majestic piece of Music. Hail Mighty Enslaved!
boring? in my opinion this video is great!!! it has a lot of the song.... the monotony, so far as i understand, is part of the message of the video. just want to leave this: great work!
Hold on, don't fade away
Don't be afraid to bleed, afraid to dream
Let the elders enlighten the path
They have cried for you, died for you
The best lyrics ever. Makes me cry for this world.

I've played with them(cello), in haugesund.
Can confirm, I was the cello.
Nuh uh

you are right
@@dEAthlikEstAtic no. "Euronymous" wrote riffs. there is also no Spirit. There is just humanity.
Easily one of the best metal songs I have ever heard
Good Odin, you haven't heard much in your life then!
it's a fantastic piece if one enjoys the style.
this isnt black metal . but better than black metal.
Välkommen till Pulvercity No, it's more "blackened" than Black. But the influence is there.... in a very progressive manner.

one of the shortest but best guitar solos that has ever been played.
This is the best you guys have ever done. Thank you for everything.
This song gives me so much hope, when I desperately need it. I love it, my gateway to the music of Enslaved!
brilliant solo. no posing, no fretboard-wanking. just on point. it tells a story with a handfull of notes. (sorry for my english)
One of the best progressive metal albums ever made, Enslaved always reminded me of Opeth with black metal sound, instead of death metal.
definitely compares well to My Arms, Your Hearse, even though that was well before Enslaved ever did prog.
Everytime I talk about Enslaved and say I love it, there's a guy telling me, : "you should listen to Opeth, it's like Enslaved, but better."
No, Enslaved are the kings of Prog Extreme Metal and the seccossors of Bathory in Viking Metal
1 or 2 good albums? naah bro
can't all of you just enjoy both bands? this isn't a race, guys
As I heard Opeth first, I can't help but make the comparison. Opeth had some great albums. My Arms, Your Hearse; Blackwater Park; Ghost Reveries.. all amazing albums.
1 of the reasons im proud to be norwegian!
this band ENSLAVED will take over the hole world........
i hope their gigs in US will turn out great...
best regards from Bergen in Norway.....
1:52 - 3:12 and 4:30 - 5:50 are my favorite parts of this song, two of the most badass sounds in the history of metal.
agreed
I haven't listened to this song in so long. I still love it so much!
Buying this album in Huntington WV mall. Leaving...slamming this in the CD player...thunderstorm just passed...steamy metallic smelling air...listening to this album all the way back to my house miles and miles away....such a poignant memory of times past.
Play GTA IV TLAD
Bro I was looking for your comment that’s such a great explanation
Black metal with a progressive edge and it doesn't sound like it was recorded in someone's basement with a single microphone.
Good stuff.
Do you not find raw recording techniques to your taste, or are you saying that they are objectively bad? Take Ulver's 'Nattens Madrigal', would you say that it would be a better album if all of the instruments could be heard clearly? I would most certainly disagree if so.
Well that's not Black Metal
Lol
Well-recorded black metal is not difficult to find nowadays.
@@VandalCleaver So are you, in fact, saying that you prefer the sound of a wasp in a bucket, to this?

Still a masterpiece years later. Love this song. Bloody amazing!

.. that is a very interesting interpretation, friend .. i thought in the same direction.
You're so correct and that is why I like enslaved because even the music itself gave me a very esoteric Vibe something spiritual coming from it
Thanks for explaining! Awesome song and now the video makes more sense to me
🎉no shit Sherlock
until now i believe that the white is humans and the reds aRE Aliens (ancient gods) and the big circle is a ufo
i think this video is much deeper than it looks, much, much deeper, it has really touched me.
6:21 fucking shivers,man....i cried i'm not gunna lie
+MrThrashmetal13 ...fuckin amazing and that solo tells me someone digs slash
+jackie thompson Ice Dale is very influenced by Slash. good ear, my friend!

Heading towards ten years on, I believe that this is my favourite song ever.
RojoDiver it was mine. But it seemingly gives me bad luck when I listened to it lol I’m not even joking
I had bought Ritiir and Vertebrae and was thoroughly surprised at how well the music portrayed itself...after making an enslaved playlist on pandora and hearing their other albums I can say for myself that Enslaved has done something for me that not many other bands have
6:21...bliss...rune-adorned ravens soaring through fjord skies into the sunset...
It was a watershed moment in my metal journey when I heard this album.
Ten years later, I still dont understand what the clip means.
But I love it.
This song is actually incomprehensibly good.
DAMN that solo at the end gets me every time... Every time.
I'm just now discovering Enslaved! Pretty damn good.
Excellent song by a really great band
The Idea of this song make me a freezing on my skin. Mastermind, great Band ! Hail the Gods !

I think Eld might just be my perfect album, but this track is so fucking good.
This video is absolutely fantastic.
The poetry of this song is so incredible!
Poetry about poetry

Album (ENSLAVED Axioma Ethica Odini) in my collection, vid in my favs. Great band.
Enslaved are so great they can get away with a shitty video and still come out clean the other end.
I totally agree, I love black metal but Enslaved has stopped playing black metal a long time ago!
They have their very own style, like Opeth, and this is awesome.
Congrats, Luka on winning the contest! I know for sure that this footage is going to look great at the concerts...
