it really says something about Joey Mantia's athletic ability that he was able to stay on a treadmill at 20mph without using any speed skating technique, just pure brute strength. Most of the recreational skaters I know, even the pretty in shape ones, struggle to maintain even 15mph.
I think its important to remind beginners that takes at least 5 years of technical training to look as good as Joey Mantia " one of the best inline speed skater in the world. His beginner's effort got him qualified for the Olympics. So don't get discouraged if you cannot achieve what you see in the video very quickly
AWESOME! Just ordered my inline skates and should get them in 3 days or so... Taking them to my local rink to practice these techniques + crossovers... I hope to one day possibly compete in speed skating!!! Thanks again!
I do agree it is very strange to see or classify Joey as someone learning to speed skate, but you have to remember this is a demonstration and to see Joey skating demonstrating his techniques was awesome. Double pushing and gliding side to side. I would love to get my hands-on one of the treadmill. ..hehe.
His upper body bobs up a bit during the push phase in the final clip. Is that inefficient or inevitable? Are his toe-wheels too high off of the belt during recovery? Is that wasted energy or just fine? Like most expert in-line skaters, this guy is not going to be a beginning ice speed skater for very long! :) Cool video!
pity u didn't turn the treat mill up to sprint speed, would be nice to see. and rly wonderful video ;) i had a weekend with speedskaters and the internet to get me out of the crappy running push as i come from inline downhill ;)
Not really translatable. In cross country skate skiing you want to be much more upright and have the hips forward. The onw thing in common would probably be the weight shift over the feet.
Yes, the basic principles of skating are the same no matter what level of skater you are. The most important will be the direction of your push. The more perpendicular to you travel direction the faster you will go and the more efficient your push will be. Making your knee angle smaller and the angle between your foot and shin will get you in a more areodynamic position. It will also lengthen your push so you don't have to go such a high frequency. Bending your upper body is more speed skating specific to reduce air friction even more. i.e. a hockey player would have a more upright upper body position and so can a recreational skater.
Joey is a champion in line skater but since he turned to ice skating he has not been so successful. Here he is demonstrating traditional technique but no double push. DP has never been accepted by the ice speed skating world.

Thanks for the video. It says so much in so little time, but seeing Joey doing it makes all the difference!

It's so weird to hear Joey call himself a beginner when you've been watching him win countless inline speed skating competitions.
And now he's winning medals in speed skating too!!
He said he is beginner ice speed skating, beginner on ice

In fact a more time world champion acting as a beginner, he actually holds more world records, over 10 and 20km road racing. So, yeah... :)
Starting with 20 miles / hour ?
World class beginner ;-)
Can any of these techniques work in Cross Country Skiing?

Joey is currently though

no
Is it normal for my back to hurt when doing this for the first time?
Crunches. Lots of crunches. Straight and crossing over.

Joey himself said it doesn't work on ice.
what is his name?
Aerodynamics don’t matter on a treadmill though…
Joey Mantia
I got depressed when they said beginner.....
Was anybody else freaked out by the fact that he was harnassed into that machine?
+captainthrall it happens to chinese but they don't complain. they fucking think they are cooperating which is the true case
