The Chronicles Vlog 2017 #1 (Part 6): Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown...

  • We're baaaaaackkkk! 2016 was a spectacular year and 2017 is off to a great start with my annual trek back to Japan for the Tokyo Auto Salon event. I've gone for the last 5 years now and I just don't think my life would be complete without attending TAS every year. Many have come and gone, experienced Japan with no aspirations to go back again, but the country is like a second home to me and I look forward to every trip back there. It only makes sense that we kick off the 2017 season of the Vlog series in Japan because there is just so much awesome that comes from there...
The finale of Vlog #1 is an extended look at our two-day long stay in Osaka. We decided to stay for only a short time because we actually have to go back to Japan a weeks after. Since we didn't have a whole lot of time, we just spent our time visiting friends and a couple of shops that our friends owned. After that, you get to hear from an old friend of ours who you (if you've been following this series since the beginning) haven't heard from in quite some time. No spoilers here, just sit back and watch. If you've tuned in since the very beginning, you'll appreciate the conversation...
*I am not a videographer and this wasn't meant to be a visual masterpiece of any sort. I am merely capturing bits and pieces of my life for you guys to see...

Can someone explain the Battle Craft joke to me? I feel like I should understand it..but...I don't. Joey, this has to be the best video you've put out to date, in my opinion and really made me appreciate what you do.
I try and imagine/picture what car culture would be like without people like , "The King"..and I think it'd be a bit different without him, and the other Kanjozoku. I put him in the same circle as Smoky Nagata, who's probably the most "famous" of the RH9 and Mid Night Club "members" and an integral part of the foundation/popularization of the Wangan racing culture. He and others like him, are reason why a whole series of "Midnight Club" and "Wangan Midnight" video games were created, and introduced the world to this mysterious part of the Japanese car scene.
Or Keiichi Tsuchiya, who is the corner stone of drifting, and the man responsible for creating a sport that has reaches across the globe, both in movies, anime, video games and a whole automotive sub-culture. Also like Smoky Nagata, he started out racing illegally, albeit in the mountains; but eventually took his skills and turned them into what was a successful racing career and eventually helping to found D1GP. (as well as:forming his own drift team, tuning company and consulting on Initial D and F&F:Tokyo Drift)
Who knows what the car scene would be like without guys like Smoky and Tsuchiya? I think it'd be a vastly different culture without them. Despite what they *used* to do was illegal, I for one, am glad they did what they did. While I certainly don't condone street racing on the highways or mountain roads, I can definitely appreciate the people and the lifestyles associated with them. With that said, people like "The King". "Smoky" Nagata, and Tsuchiya (as well as others) are a big part of why I got into the Japanese/Import car scene, and because of that, I've met incredible people and made some great memories.
Long live the Kanjo, the Wangan and the Touge.

I'm a older one of your subs. I think the interview was one of the best things ive seen on your Japan video series. I have been into kanjo for about 10 years and at that time could only see very limited pieces. I never copied their style or culture out of respect. I am from the car club era and treated this the same way. What really broke it open for me is a video that was done and Yuta narrated I saw about 5 or 6 years ago. I still love the style but will never imitate it. It will be played out here in the US soon enough. Again thanks for the great videos and the interview was fantastic

That interview with Kanjo King i really felt like im glad he was honest about the whole situation on what Kanjo's history really was. Because in the U.S scene you'll see a few ''Kanjo Theme civics'' here there but for the most part their things in japan that should be kept preserved just for japan only imo, I notice each and every time a build happens to be on U.S soil the mentality is way way different compared to people in Japan everything from the car , and authentic parts and wheels. It just seems like when we as in the U.S replicate a J-Style build i compare it to like being at a art show, you don't know what it is but you know you have to have it. Regardless if you don't know the significant meaning behind it. And that's what makes Japan so special, Ever since i read the comic book called Naniwa Tomoare and read it like actually read it's whole different ball game for people that really don't know what really goes down in Japan, But with all that said I'm really glad he spoke his mind about this subject.

you know i dont know who you are and most definitely you don't know me, but i just want to say, THANKS! For all your hard work over the years. Currently I've been severley depressed to the point of having suicidal thoughts hearing voices in my head and isolating myself from everyone; all things i love stopped, but somehow amongst all the bs, cars just gradually made their way back in my life somehow, again, thank you for keeping my automotive dreams alive, if it wasn't for both the coverage and my initial interest on kanjo racers i would of committed suicide recently. I grew up in a shitty "hood" of southern texas, predominantly a hispanic neighborhood, and any car culture that's not a lowered chevy Silverado or a "S.L.A.B." get a lot of REAL hate, but i never really cared what others say, i will always love Hondas and other jdm cars. Thank you and may you and your loved one's live a happy and blessed life.

i feel during the interview when talking about racing on the kanjo, and why he does it. i feel like the u.s scene wants to do kanjo builds but on a personal level i don't think they can ever match up to japans builds and why they do what they do. from what I've seen especially on instagram everyone wants to fit in and fit the part and just say hey look at me i have a kanjo theme car i feel like kanjo should be preserved for and only japan

Kevin Smith so true, look me up on IG cuz I built a Kanjo style CRX Si with a B16a SiR engine and after racing for years on the freeways in AZ and California and when I gave the cops and 3 helicopters a run for their money and when I was doing a year in prison i realized it's just not the same if your not in Japan... I was pretty much just racing like a maniac as load and as colorful as I could.. I still don't have license plates on the car and now I'm racing through New Mexico, Texas, and I'll be in Louisiana by tomorrow..

rjbravo77 that's fucking badass bro, I haven't run from the police yet but I've mapped a few race tracks out of my small town in az. I have a kanjo style ef hatch that I'm still building ruining a b18c. I just love how they race like the last days of their life's in Japan's highways which look and feel really nice. I've done it in Mexico too since I have a house over there but it's not the same since the streets are really bad over there, but one thing is for sure the cops won't get you that easy as here in the U.S

This is just incredible to see, i am a subscriber since 2015 but your video's inspired me alot to buy a Honda Civic Vtec from year 1985 - 2001 maybe a 1.5 liter 114hp EK3 hatch as my first car or if it's too expensive than a EF Hatch.
I love your videos and watch every post, i get happier when i see Japan in the titles. Anyway keep up the great work Joey!

George Bolk JR I don't know about Europe but here in the states it's really hard to get parts for a EF hatch. EK3 parts are way easier to get, but to be honest I wouldn't buy any other honda hatch other than my EF. That's just me though so think about it good buddy don't buy the EK3 and regret not getting the EF hahaha
