I was going to use steel turnbuckles to clamp it in. The bungees were supposed to be just a quick trial but with 3 along top and 2 in each bottom corner it goes in quick and is plenty stout. I think about the only way it would come out would be if I rolled it and at that point being thrown clear would be about the only prayer for the bikes anyways. In a panic stop all the force goes forward to front of bed and its rock solid.
Great idea, it's given me idea for making something similar for a trailer. Just wondering if you've had any damage to the front brakes cut into the wood during the past year?
It's 6.5 feet. If you have the really short bed you'd probably need to leave the tailgate down for a full size bike if you wanted to leave both wheels on.
You could use steel turnbuckles to attach the rack to the trunk and then nylon ratchet straps to hold the bikes. That was what I originally planned to do, but the bungees were so secure I didn't feel the need to do so. Nope. I made sure the slit was big enough that brake doesnt bend going in, and no issues.

What is the purpose of that extra bit of wood around the third bike's tire?
The little tire didnt go far enough in before the forks hit to sit really stable...it wanted to roll back and out.

In case of an accident strong enough to move the bikes i dont think I'll care about the bikes.
