I have struggled getting my head around this piece for most of my life. There are so many jumps and aggressive changes of rhythm and style in short spans. This is one of the only performances I have heard that breathes as one. He just gets it. It is a "waltz"- a rather wild one but nonetheless it needs space to breath, especially when the main dance theme arrives. A lot of pianists just speed through it, but you miss the dance element. He has a concept of the whole piece, and it works wonderfully. Bravo.

The amount of technical control over every sound is absolutely unfathomable. This may be one of the greatest recorded performances of this piece to date. Gonna be keeping my ear out for Lucas Debargue over the next 30 or 40 years.

To play Liszt, to have an interpretation, you have to be far above the technique. And there must be unity, not a bunch of separate pieces. It's a Waltz puzzle that only the greatest artists can manage. For most pianists, it is just an opportunity to show off. All of the Mephisto Waltzes are similar in this way. Mr. Debargue has his own way of interpreting, which I admire. His Scarlatti is well worth hearing. He is on his way. I look forward to his next performance of the Mephisto Waltz No. 1.

A very interesting interpretation, but the performance of Alexei Sultanov is more significant for me. Once upon a time I could not cope with this piece and gave up piano lessons :-)

Do you mean the population or just all piano players? Because if we take all humans, there are close to none people who can play this I'd guess due to the huge part of non/"bad" players
